Jazz Age Illustration
by: Coyle, Heather Campbell

Hardcover. New Haven CT, Yale University Press, 1st, 2024, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Hardcover, pictorial boards with a red cloth spine, 174 pages. A gorgeous look at popular illustrators of the Jazz Age and their influential role in the dynamic culture of the 1920s and '30s The 1920s in the United States was characterized by economic prosperity and dramatic social change. Known as the Jazz Age, it was a time when Black music, art, and literature became a powerful cultural force. Shifting roles for women and trends in youth culture coalesced in the figure of the flapper, causing a moral panic chronicled in the expanding popular press. Exploring how the art of popular illustration helped shape this new consciousness and impacted publishing, politics, and daily life, this volume features works by artists such as Aaron Douglas, Nell Brinkley, John Held Jr., and Lois Mailou Jones. Their striking images illustrated the New Yorker, Vanity Fair, The Crisis, Liberty, and the Saturday Evening Post, as well as newspapers, novels, and books for children. Essays foreground the contributions of women and Black artists; draw parallels between music, fashion, and the aesthetics of popular illustration; discuss the impact of the Harlem Renaissance and the national growth of the Black press; highlight the legacy of illustrator Howard Pyle and his students; and consider the appropriation of the subversive jazz culture by a white audience. Love and Hatred: The Stormy Marriage of Leo and Sonya Tolstoy by: William L. Shirer

Love and Hatred: The Stormy Marriage of Leo and Sonya Tolstoy
by: William L. Shirer

Hardcover. NY, Simon & Schuster, 1st, 1994, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket, 400 pages. In 1897 Tolstoy wrote his daughter Tonya, explaining his opposition to her desired marriage: "As far as love is concerned, it's an ignoble and unhealthy sentiment-I would not have opened my door to it." Perhaps this passage reflects the turbulent marriage of Leo and Sonya-first the promise of love and then disillusionment. Certainly, there was a love of sorts-their marriage lasted 48 years and brought forth 13 children-but the later half of the marriage was soured by acrimony, secrecy, and great emotional wounding. The greatest division came with the battle over the rights to Tolstoy's works. Sonya finally got sole possession, outliving Leo by nine years and plagued by the thought that she had been wrong for her genius husband. In intimate and scrupulous detail often drawn directly from Leo and Sonya's diaries, Shirer (The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich) has profiled the disintegration of a marriage. Clean copy.

Medieval Children
by: Nicholas Orme

Hardcover. New Haven CT, Yale University Press, 1st, 2001, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket, 387 pages. Color and b&w illustrations. Leading medieval historian Nicholas Orme draws together a vast range of sources and disciplines-history, literature, religion, and art-to create a picture of medieval childhood more comprehensive than ever before. Beginning with pregnancy and childbirth, Orme explores the succeeding stages of a child's growth to adulthood. He discusses baptism, the significance of birthdays and ages, and family life, including upbringing, food, clothes, sleep, and the plight of the poor. He also chronicles the misfortunes of childhood, from disablement, abuse, and accidents to illness and death. In a fascinating review of the special culture of children, the author describes their rhymes, toys, and games; their religion and relationship to the Church; and their learning to read the literature for children. The final chapter of the book explains how adolescents grew up and entered the adult world. Mild fade to spine, front fly leaf with two small scars to black paper, otherwise a clean, bright copy.

Moby-Dick: A Pop-Up Book
by: Sam Ita

Hardcover. NY, Sterling, 1st, 2007, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Hardcover, pictorial boards with blue cloth spine, 12 pages with 6 pop-up spreads. Call me Ishmael." Three of the most famous words in all literature, they begin Herman Melville's masterpiece, Moby-Dick. Now, the epic saga of Captain Ahab's obsessive quest for the white whale comes vividly to life in this three-dimensional graphic novel, the first of its kind. This phenomenal work is the creation of multi-talented artist Sam Ita, apprentice to Robert Sabuda, one of the world's master paper engineers. Every amazing element is awe-inspiring: there's not just one pop-up per spread, but several, surrounded by colorful comic book-style panels that convey the story's drama. Some of the pops-ups are huge and incredibly detailed, like the Pequod itself, which rises gloriously from the page, complete with rigging. Others, smaller but no less wonderful, hide beneath flaps and folds. In one instance, readers actually get to look through a 3-D periscope and see Ishmael through the lens, drifting in the ocean. Clean copy w/o any flaws to paper.

New Ways to Kill Your Mother: Writers and Their Families
by: Toibin, Colm

Hardcover. NY, Scribner , 1st, 2012, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright, unclipped dust jacket. Novelist and critic Colm Toibin provides "a fascinating exploration of writers and their families" (Entertainment Weekly) and "an excellent guide through the dark terrain of unconscious desires" (The Evening Standard) in this brilliant collection of essays that explore the relationships of writers to their families and their work. Colm Toibin--celebrated both for his award-winning fiction and his provocative book reviews and essays--traces the intriguing, often twisted family ties of writers in the books they leave behind. Through the relationship between W. B. Yeats and his father, Thomas Mann and his children, Jane Austen and her aunts, and Tennessee Williams and his sister, Toibin examines a world of relations, richly comic or savage in their implications. Not of Woman Born: Representations of Caesarean Birth in Medieval and Renaissance Culture
by: Renate Blumenfeld-Kosinski

Softcover. Ithaca NY, Cornell University Press, reprint, 1991, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, 204 pages. "Not of woman born," "the Fortunate," "the Unborn" - the terms designating those born by Caesarean section in medieval and Renaissance Europe were mysterious and ambiguous. In antiquity, children fortunate enough to have survived a Caesarean birth were believed to be marked for a special destiny. Vividly tracing the evolution of Caesarean birth from the early 1300s (when the operation was performed almost exclusively by midwives) through the Renaissance period (when midwives were considered witches and male surgeons took control), Blumenfeld-Kosinski . . . does more than provide [an] engrossingly accessible, historical account of the now-commonplace procedure--she unveils the roots of a medical misogyny that still prevails today. A richly cross-disciplined study utilizing depictions of Caesarean delivery in art, literature, and medical texts and illuminations (illustrations), [this book] is a captivating and revealing work that will be relished by readers of medical and cultural history, as well as by those who are interested in the subject of male dominance over women.
