Roving Bill Aspinwall: Dispatches from a Hobo in Post-Civil War America
by: Bill Aspinwall (Author), Owen Clayton (Editor)

Softcover. Port Townsend WA, Feral House, 1st, 2022, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, 339 pages. Ladies' man. Child soldier. Civil War hero. Egotist. Tramp. Drunkard. Published author. Roving Bill Aspinwall: Dispatches from a Hobo in Post-Civil War America tells the story of an American hobo entirely in his own words. William 'Roving Bill' Aspinwall was all of these things and yet no lone descriptor does him justice. Born one of 23 siblings, married 5 times, wounded fighting for the Union in one of the bloodiest battles of the American Civil War, kicked out of numerous jobs and soldiers' homes for drunkenness, and having spent decades wandering as a penniless vagabond, Bill also kept up a 24-year correspondence with John James McCook, Professor of Modern Languages at Trinity College, Hartford, Connecticut. In so doing Bill provided the earliest and best account of life on the road by an American hobo. Written between 1893 and 1917, Roving Bill Aspinwall: Dispatches from a Hobo in Post-Civil War America tells Bill's story entirely in his own words. Describing experiences on the road, the people he meets, his dalliances with women and his memories of the Civil War, the letters are a rich and unique correspondence. Having been physically and mentally scarred at the 1863 Battle of Champion Hill, Bill details his lifelong battle with booze. He also gives first-hand accounts of men thrown out of work during the economic Panic of 1893, of wandering around the country as an itinerant umbrella-mender, of working in factories, farms and even a circus, as well as his visit to the St. Louis World's Fair in 1903. Bill's words are the real voice of a nineteenth-century hobo.

Hardcover. NY, Random Library, 1st, 1962, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Hardcover. 32 pages illustrated by Milion Glaser. Mocked throughout the jungles of India due to his small size, the smallest elephant in the world--no bigger than a house cat--has decided enough is enough. After all, if he's no bigger than a house cat, then a house must be where he belongs! After a long journey in the hold of a ship, this smallest elephant in the world finds himself a home with a nice little boy inside. But he must disguise himself as a cat to satisfy the boy's mother, and disaster strikes when he is confronted with his first mouse... Sophie Crumb: Evolution of a Crazy Artist
by: Crumb (Ed.), R. and Aline

Hardcover. NY, Norton, 1st, 2010, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 272 pages. Sophie Crumb's startlingly expressive drawings track her development as an artist from age two to twenty-eight. Sifting through dozens of their daughter's remarkable sketchbooks, our generation's most celebrated graphic artists have, with their only child, Sophie, now selected more than three hundred paintings and drawings that depict her artistic and psychological maturation. Revealing how an original artistic sensibility is both innate and nurtured, the book features six separate developmental stages, including Sophie's earliest drawings, the elaborate fantasy world of her childhood, her late adolescent rebellion, and her coming of age in the milieu of the Paris circus world and New York's "seventh circle of hell." The drawings from her early twenties-of tattoo artists, dangerous men-reflect a personal anguish that finally ends with her becoming a mother and creating a family of her own. Illuminating and intimate, this book is a dramatic yet subtle statement on the evolution of personality as seen through art. Four-color illustrations throughout

Spillane: King of Pulp Fiction
by: Collins, Max Allan

Hardcover. NY, Mysterious Press, 1st, 2022, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright, unclipped dust jacket, 372 pages, b&w illustrations. There has never been a full-length biography of Mickey Spillane, the most popular and influential mystery writer of his era--until now. Beginning in 1947 with I, the Jury, and continuing with his next six novels, Spillane quickly amassed a readership in the tens of millions, becoming the best-selling novelist in the history of American publishing. Surrounded by controversy for the overt violence and suggestive sexual content of his iconic Mike Hammer private eye novels, Spillane was loathed by critics but beloved by his readers. There is, however, more to Spillane's life than the books. He also starred as Hammer in a movie, was a circus performer, worked with the FBI in capturing a notorious criminal, and starred in Miller Light beer commercials that were so popular they ran for a quarter of a century. Max Allan Collins became Spillane's friend and collaborator, continuing the Mike Hammer series for years after the author's death, building upon unfinished manuscripts the writer left behind. Now, with co-author James Traylor, Collins has produced the first comprehensive and authoritative profile of the Mystery Writers of America Grand Master. Clean copy.

Stuntman #1 Facsimile Edition
by: Jack Kirby/Joe Simon

Softcover. PS Artbooks, reprint, 2024, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, 56 pages. High-flying action and jaw-dropping stunts as legendary creators Jack Kirby and Joe Simon create an entirely new non-super character. A daredevil stuntman is embroiled in circus stunts and movie directing, and it's all some of S&K's finest Golden Age work. Killer double-page action spreads akin to their work for Captain America in 1941-42. Features " Killer of the Big-Top," "The House of Madness," and "The Crime on Cauliflower Row," all by S&K. Plus "The Furnished Room" by Bill Draut (part of the Simon and Kirby Studio) and an adventure of Junior Genius by J. Keeler, a back up strip. Sadly, Stuntman came along after the war when superheroes were on the way out...even though he was not super-powered, but had more in common with Batman. He lasted for just two issues, and an ashcan third issue. Then his adventures were reprinted in Thrills of Tomorrow #19 and 20, in 1955. #19 even reused this exact cover in an attempted revival just before the Comics Code.
