Along with cutting-edge art, literature, and jazz music of 1920s Paris, there was also experimental new dance, exemplified by the Ballets Suedois, the "Swedish Ballet." Choreographed almost entirely by Jean Bsrlin but visualized by 32 painters from 11 nationalities, it boasted costumes and backdrops from the likes of Fernand LZger, Gssta Adrian-Nilsson (GAN), Nils Dardel, and Gerald Murphy, with music by Erik Satie and even Cole Porter, in 23 ballets produced during the company's brief, brilliant existence. Illustrated with 78 archival photos and sketches and 67 color reproductions of posters and production paintings, this catalog is as much an art book as it is a dance history, with works seldom seen in over 80 years.
Hardcover. Milan, 5 Continents, 1st, 2007, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, 142 pages, b&w photographs taken by Muller. Illustrated boards, no dust jacket issued. A Passage to Congo is a collection of photographs taken by Doctor mile Muller (1891-1976) in the Congo provinces of the Kasa< and Katanga, territories of the Chokwe, Luba, Bashibushong and Basalampasu tribes. For these people, he was not the boss, but he who cured, who gave relief, who listened. He could move easily between the tribes without having to tackle the reticence that has denatured so many ethnic photographs. The privileged witnesses of esoteric ceremonies that are rarely photographed, his images are precious from an ethnographic and historical point of view, and reveal a fine aesthetic sense and profound humanity. Veritable living masks, as in the remarkable portraits of young Chokwe girls, astonishing initiation rites, scenes of divination, wild rhythmic dances responding to the beat of the large slotted drums, sculptural bodies decorated with tattoos and refined headgear recall the beauty and riches of these cultures, now lost in the modern world.

Pola Negri (1897-1987) rose from an impoverished childhood in Warsaw, Poland, to become one of early Hollywood's greatest stars. After tuberculosis ended her career as a ballerina in 1912, she turned to acting and worked under legendary directors Max Reinhardt and Ernst Lubitsch in Germany. Negri preceded Lubitsch to Hollywood, where she quickly became a fan favorite thanks to her beauty, talent, and diva personality. Known for her alluring sexuality and biting artistic edge, she starred in more than sixty films and defined the image of the cinematic femme fatale. Author Mariusz Kotowski brings the screen siren's story to English-speaking audiences for the first time in this fascinating biography. At the height of her fame, Negri often portrayed exotic and mysterious temptresses, headlining in such successes as The Spanish Dancer (1923) and Forbidden Paradise (1924), before returning to Europe in the 1930s. The devastating effects of World War II soon drove her back to the United States, where she starred in Hi Diddle Diddle (1943) and pursued her vaudeville career before retiring from the entertainment industry. Kotowski also illuminates Negri's dramatic personal life, detailing her numerous love affairs-including her engagement to Charlie Chaplin and her romance with Rudolph Valentino-as well as her multiple marriages. This long-overdue biography not only paints a detailed portrait of one classic Hollywood's most intriguing stars and the film industry's original Jezebel, but also explores the link between Hollywood and European cinema during the interwar years.

Those familiar with Newton's fashion work for Vogue , Elle , etc., his photo essays for Life , or his earlier books will not be surprised by these portraits of celebrities shown as never before. Newton's dancers, designers, and grand dames, indeed "elite society's newsmakers, night-lifers, and would-be transgressors," act a part in dramas he has contrived. From Salvador Dali to Grace Jones to Natassia Kinski (dancing with a Marlene Dietrich doll) to Prince Rainier, Newton's portraits are often shocking, manipulative, and bizarre; they are never boring. Fine, full-page reproductions and Carol Squiers's revealing interview with Newton enhance the work. Clean copy.

Alice Friedman tells the fascinating story of the queer avant-garde of the 1920s and '30s in New York, Paris, and Venice, as seen through the eyes of Max Ewing (1903-1934), a young musician, photographer, and man-about-town who, although virtually unknown today, moved in extraordinary circles. Among his friends and acquaintances, he listed Carl Van Vechten, Gertrude Stein, Muriel Draper, Romaine Brooks, Tallulah Bankhead. In his photographs and letters, we meet the rising stars of modern art, music, dance, and literature and enter a world of interracial friendship, "queer space," and experimentation that shone brightly before being swept away by the Depression.
Hardcover. NY, Taschen, reprint, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Hardcover, illustrated boards. "Silly Fool Comics" fills the final page in this sixth volume, with a devilish creature telling the anguished Crumb, "YOU Will Soon Be DEAD!" He was a mere 67, but in his self-absorbed Crumbish way was obsessing about death, when not making intimate and loving portraits of his wife Aline and all the other women who'd tormented his libido since boyhood. Most impressive in this book are his historic tableau, some single page, others multi-page strips, including Piers the Ploughman of 14th century England, My Secret Life by "Walter," Rough Women of the Dark Ages and The Apache Dance, from a 1930s Parisian postcard. His Rapidographed cross hatching is superb as ever and we are treated to long screeds displaying his undimmed brilliance at analyzing the human condition, in a morbid but nonetheless amusing way. One could say there are no surprises in content, as Crumb has produced a consistent body of work over the last 40, if not 50, years, yet each page is also jarringly different from the one before, due to his personal juxtaposition of images. So much is packed in you can spend an hour and find you're only a quarter of the way through, with Crumb bemoaning his mortality, while continuing to prosper, every few pages. A fine stand-alone volume, and must-have completion for the sketchbook set.
