Josef Paul Kleihues
by: Kleihues, Josef Paul, Andrea Mesecke and Thorsten Scheer

Hardcover. Ostfildern GR, Hatje Cantz, 1st, 2008, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 288 pages 231 illustrations 60 in color with 274 plans and drawings. Biography. Like new in publisher's shrink-wrap. Josef Paul Kleihues (1933-2004) was one of the most prolific architects of postwar Germany, famous both as the Director of the International Building Exhibition Berlin in 1987 and for his design for the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago. He was also known for his sensitive interventions into older buildings, an instance of which is the former Hamburger Bahnhof--now the Museum fur Gegenwart--in Berlin, where Kleihues intermixed glass walls and light installations by the American Minimalist Dan Flavin with the building's original nineteenth-century Neoclassical design. (His reconstruction was widely deemed to rival or even surpass Gae Aulenti's overhaul of the interior of the Musee d'Orsay in Paris.) This first volume of a three-part monograph presents projects up to 1980, including the highly acclaimed Berlin Sanitation Department and the Neukolln Hospital. Even in these early works, Kleihues' practical, problem-solving approach is already evident, indicating his readiness to reflect on the traditional approaches of Modern architecture and his capacity to expand them in interesting ways. This very generously illustrated volume was designed by Kleihues himself, just before his death in 2004.

JULIAN SCHNABEL : POLAROIDS
by: Schnabel, Julian

Hardcover. Munich ; London ; New York, Prestel, 2010, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Hardcover without dust jacket. Like new in publisher's shrink-wrap. This book collects the large-format Polaroids by the American artist and film director Julian Schnabel. Schnabel is a major force in the international art scene. Shot with an extraordinary 20 x 24 inch vintage camera, his intimate and revealing large-format images are printed in colour and black and white; some have been hand coloured or painted on; and many are previously unpublished. The photographs include intriguing portraits of the artist's family and friends, including Lou Reed, Placido Domingo, the Beastie Boys, and Mickey Rourke. There are also private spaces dear to Schnabel, such as his own Palazzo Chupi in New York City - which he designed and decorated - as well as interiors of studios in Brooklyn, Montauk, and Long Island. Together these Polaroids create a unique tableau, both intensely personal and poetic.

Look at me: Photographs from Mexico City by Jed Fielding
by: Jed Fielding , Britt Salvesen, et al.

Hardcover. Chicago, University of Chicago Press, 1st, 2009, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 132 pages. Sight is central to the medium of photography. But what happens when the subjects of photographic portraits cannot look back at the photographer or even see their own image? An in-depth pictorial study of blind schoolchildren in Mexico, Look at me draws attention to (and distinctions between) the activity of sight and the consciousness of form. Combining aspects of his earlier, acclaimed street work with an innovative approach to portraiture, Chicago-based photographer Jed Fielding has concentrated closely on these children's features and gestures, probing the enigmatic boundaries between surface and interior, innocence and knowing, beauty and grotesque. Design, composition, and the play of light and shadow are central elements in these photographs, but the images are much more than formal experiments; they confront disability in a way that affirms life. Fielding's sightless subjects project a vitality that seems to extend beyond the limits of self-consciousness. In collaborative, joyful participation with the children, he has made pictures that reveal essential gestures of absorption and the basic expressions of our creatureliness.

Maynard L. Parker: Modern Photography and the American Dream
by: Jennifer A. Watts

Hardcover. New Haven CT, Yale University Press, 1st, 2012, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 288 pages. As a prolific photographer for House Beautiful, Better Homes and Gardens, Architectural Digest, and Sunset magazine, Maynard L. Parker (1900-1976) was a pioneer in documenting residential spaces and landscapes for postwar America. His extensively published, sun-kissed brand of photography made him a critical contributor to domestic design culture from the 1940s into the 1960s. Parker's lens revealed the homes and lifestyles of affluent Americans and celebrities, including Judy Garland, Clark Gable, and Bing Crosby, as well as the interiors, gardens, and built works of Samuel Marx, Frank Lloyd Wright, Thomas Church, and Cliff May, offering an alluring template for living in a new consumer age. Maynard L. Parker: Modern Photography and the American Dream is the first monograph to consider Parker and his work. Lavishly illustrated essays by leading scholars set Parker's photography against the backdrop of an unprecedented demographic shift, the Cold War, and a suburban society increasingly fixated on consumption.

Nancy Braithwaite: Simplicity
by: Nancy Braithwaite

Hardcover. NY, Rizzoli International, 1st, 2014, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket, 296 pages in color. Interior designer Nancy Braithwaite s long-awaited first book is a striking tutorial in the power of simplicity in design. In the world of interior design, Nancy Braithwaite is known for her single-minded devotion to the principle that has guided her work for more than forty years: simplicity. Braithwaite s work is luxuriously minimalist, its beauty inextricably tied to its Shaker-like purity. While her work varies from art deco to country, the underlying rules remain the same: every element should strive to be simple and powerful without compromise, and every room must have a level of power that comes from commanding scale, repetition of elements, subtleties of color, or the sheer beauty of forms. Clean copy. DUE TO WEIGHT DOMESTIC SHIPPING ONLY.
