Henry Augustus Shute (1856-1943) was an American lawyer, judge and writer, who was best known for his humorous stories of small-town New England life, particularly his series of Plupy books inspired by his boyhood in Exeter, New Hampshire.

It begins with a brief survey of Lucien Pissarro's early career in France in order to establish the influences and motivations for his book designs and proceeds to examine Lucien's association with Charles Ricketts, the establishment of the Eragny Press, and the Press' relationship to the publishers Hacon & Ricketts. Eragny was not a commercial publisher, yet profits was an important motivation for the Pissarros. Included here is the first major account for a private press of the costs of production, profits, and marketing and distribution practices. Eragny Press books were promoted and sold in England, the Continent, and the United States. Two of the Eragny Press books were the results of commissions from French bibliophile clubs. This history of the Eragny Press includes a discussion of the influences and artistic theories that are the basis for the Pissarros' books and provides a critical reassessment of their significance within the history of the English Arts and Crafts Private Press movement. About half the book is devoted to an exhaustive and detailed bibliography of all the Eragny Press publications, with critical commentary on each. Accompanying the text and the descriptive bibliography are more than seventy-five reproductions of rare Eragny wood engravings ( by Lucien Pissarro, T. Sturge Moore, and others), title pages, borders and decorated initials, binding papers, and book covers. A History of the Eragny Press, 1894-1914, is an important book for anyone interested in the history of printing, the Arts and Crafts movement, Impressionism, private presses, the art of wood engraving, and illustrated and fine books.

Tight, attractive copy of this early "Lakeside Classic," the annual keepsake presented by this printer/publisher to friends and clients starting in 1903. Illustrated with two portraits of the author. So many pioneer stories were written at the request of a child or grandchild. What makes Christiana Tillson's humorous memoir different was her background. Tillson's story records the reactions produced upon a refined New England woman by an environment at once predominantly southern and wholly frontier. Her youth in 1822 and her parting from all that she had known in the East were common of many later Western migrants. But when she and her husband went out to try their fortunes, the "West" was what we today call the Midwest. It was still a wild, dangerous, and uncertain place to try to make a future. Clean, bright copy.

Alison Jackson has photographed the Queen of England on the toilet, George Bush and Tony Blair chatting in the sauna, Mick Jagger doing gymnastics, and Monica Lewinsky lighting Bill Clinton's cigar. Or has she? The likenesses are uncanny, but of course, her subjects are look-alikes. Her photos demonstrate that while seeing is believing, the truth is another story entirely. In her work, Jackson says, "Likeness becomes real and fantasy touches on the believable. The viewer is suspended in disbelief. I try to highlight the psychological relationship between what we see and what we imagine. This is bound up in our need to look--our voyeurism--and our need to believe." Indeed, by showing "celebrities" ostensibly caught unawares, Jackson's pictures show us what we imagine might go on behind closed doors. Jackson's work causes controversy, because it threatens to cross the line between the private and public life of our contemporary icons. Because we unquestioningly accept the authenticity of the photograph, it would appear that we are being given a glimpse of something confidential, a private moment. It is only upon closer examination that we question the reality of the image, and hopefully this makes us question our unwitting tendency to believe everything we see in the media today.
