Larry Legend
by: Shaw, Mark

Hardcover. Chicago, Masters Press, 3rd pr., 1998, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket, 328 pages, b&w photos. Even without his masterful debut as coach of the 1997-1998 Indiana Pacers, Larry Bird's brilliant, gutsy career with the Boston Celtics--three NBA championship rings and a trio of Most Valuable Player trophies--cries out for celebration and reassessment. He was a dominant player, a thinking player who controlled the game as much with his leadership as his keen passing, tough "D," and the soft touch of his jumper. In Larry Legend, Shaw interweaves chapters of Bird's biography with chapters chronicling his Coach of the Year season to create a hybrid volume; rather than do both well, he does both adequately. Everything is here--Bird's French Lick, Indiana, childhood; why he left Bobby Knight and the Indiana University pressure cooker for lower profile Indiana State; the glory years with the Celtics; the rivalry with Magic Johnson; the back problems; and the ways he re-created the Pacers in his own court-burned image. Margaret Bourke-White and the Dawn of Apartheid
by: Lichtenstein, Alex

Hardcover. Bloomington, IN, Indiana University Press, 1st, 2016, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, 152 pages. Hardcover with dust jacket. A very clean, unmarked copy with only minor wear to dust jacket edges. A tight copy. As a photographer for Life and Fortune magazines, Margaret Bourke-White traveled to Russia in the 1930s, photographed the Nazi takeover of Czechoslovakia in 1938, and recorded the liberation of Buchenwald at the end of WWII. In 1949, Life sent her to South Africa to take photographs in a country that was becoming racially polarized by white minority rule. Life published two photo-essays highlighting Bourke-White's photographs, but much of her South African work remained unpublished until now. Here, these stunning photographs collected by Alex Lichtenstein and Rick Halpern offer an unparalleled visual record of white domination in South Africa during the early days of apartheid. In addition to these powerful and historically significant photographs, Lichtenstein and Halpern include two essays that explore Bourke-White's artistic and political formation and provide background material about the cultural, political, and economic circumstances that produced the rise and triumph of Afrikaner nationalism in South Africa. This richly illustrated book brings to light a large body of photography from a major American photographer and offers a compelling history of a reprehensible system of racial conflict and social control that Bourke-White took such pains to document.

Ontology: The Hermeneutics of Facticity
by: Martin Heidegger

Hardcover. Bloomington, Indiana University Press, 1st, 1999, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Good, Hardcover in a very good dust jacket with fading to spine and spine edge, 138 pages. "With thematic trajectories pointing both toward and beyond Being and Time, this translation ...is of enormous significance for students of the development of Heidegger's early thought." - Daniel O. Dahlstrom, Boston University. First published in 1988 as volume 63 of Heidegger's Collected Works, "Ontology" follows Heidegger's lectures at the University of Freiburg during the summer semester of 1923. In these lectures, Heidegger reviews and makes critical appropriation of the hermeneutical tradition from Plato, Aristotle, and Augustine to Schleiermacher and Dilthey. Other important themes that are taken up are his turn to the facticity and everyday world of Dasein, his interpretation of human existence in the present historically and philosophically, his understanding of phenomenology, and his repeated insistence on the temporal dimension of interpretation and significance. Students of Heidegger's thought will find initial breakthroughs in his unique elaboration of the meaning of human existence and "question of Being," which received mature expression in Being and Time. Name on front fly leaf, light pencil notations to rear endpapers, 3 pages.

Otto Ping: Photographer of Brown County, Indiana, 1900-1940
by: W. Douglas Hartley

Softcover. Indianapolis, Indiana Historical Society, 1st, 1994, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover 96 pages. Otto Ping began taking pictures of the people and places of his native Brown County, Indiana, in 1900 at the age of seventeen in order to make some extra money. He continued doing so for forty years while he worked at such other endeavors as peddling, farming, canning, and chicken raising. Unlike the painters and photographers who came to the county in these years to capture quaint and rustic scenes for sophisticated audiences elsewhere, Ping made his pictures for the people who were in them. Primarily a portraitist, Ping photographed individuals, couples, family groups, and larger gatherings. He had no studio and carried with him no lights or props. His portraits are characterized by hastily thrown up backdrops, stark lighting, and rigid poses. They have a documentary quality, and one senses in the faces that peer from these images the determination with which these people met lives of toil and hardship. Many of the portraits betray a sense of melancholy. Life was tenuous for both young and old, and the photographer often worked against time to provide a family with images of the living before his efforts became memorial. Ping photographed people at work and play. Images abound of stiffly posed groups in front of sawmills, churches, schools, and lodge halls; families in front of cabins or newly framed houses; couples with buggies; and children at play. Painting Below Zero: Notes on a Life in Art
by: James Rosenquist and David Dalton

Hardcover. NY, Knopf, 1st, 2009, Hardcover, 384 pages. Ronsequist writes about growing up in a tight-knit community of Scandinavian farmers in North Dakota and Minnesota in the late 1930s and early 1940s; about his mother, who was not only an amateur painter but, along with his father, a passionate aviator; and about leaving that flat midwestern landscape in 1955 for New York, where he had won a scholarship to the Art Students League. George Grosz, Edwin Dickinson, and Robert Beverly Hale were among his teachers, but his early life was a struggle until he discovered sign painting. He describes days suspended on scaffolding high over Broadway, painting movie or theater billboards, and nights at the Cedar Tavern with Willem de Kooning, Franz Kline, and the poet LeRoi Jones. His first major studio, on Coenties Slip, was in the thick of the new art world. Among his neighbors were Ellsworth Kelly, Robert Indiana, Agnes Martin, and Jack Youngerman, and his mentors Robert Rauschenberg and Jasper Johns.

Passing the Time in Ballymenone
by: Henry Glassie

Softcover. Bloomington IN, Indiana University Press, reprint, 1995, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover in pictorial wrappers, 852 pages. The life and art, the folklore, history, and common work of a rural community in Northern Ireland-through the eyes and pen of gifted folklorist Henry Glassie. Glassie regards the people of Ballymenone with respect and affection, allowing them to describe their ideas, life-ways, and values on their own terms, not his. Recognizing that theirs is a mindset and lifestyle that must be seen as an integrated whole, Glassie studies everything about Ballymenone from traditional songs to entertainment to religious beliefs to architecture, liberally quoting from the people who welcomed him into their homes over his extended stays. Some of his insights are pure brilliance, such as recognizing the way the poets and storytellers of a rural Irish district have adapted ancient Gaelic metrics to the English they use today. You will learn more about Ireland and its people in this one book than in a host of others. Clean copy.

Philosophers in Exile: The Correspondence of Alfred Schutz and Aron Gurwitsch, 1939-1959
by: Richard Grathoff (Ed.)

Hardcover. Bloomington, Indiana University Press, 1st, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket, 341 pages. This book presents the remarkable correspondence between Alfred Schutz and Aron Gurwitsch, emigre philosophers influenced by Edmund Husserl, who fled Europe on the eve of World War II and ultimately became seminal figures in the establishment of phenomenology in the United States. Their deep and lasting friendship grew out of their mutual concern with the question of the connections between science and the life-world. Interwoven with philosophical exchange is the two scholars' encounter with the unfamiliar problems of American academic life-what Gurwitsch called the "passology" of exile. Apart from its brilliant and moving portrait of two distinguished men, the correspondence holds rich significance for current issues in philosophy and the social sciences. Clean copy.

Philosophical Commentary on these Words of The Gospel Luke 14:23, "Compel Them to Come In That My House May Be Full'
by: Bayle, Pierre

Softcover. Indianapolis, Liberty Fund, reprint, 2005, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, 639 pages. Christian apologists as early as St. Augustine have appealed to Christ's words in Luke 14:23-'Go out into the highways and hedges and compel them to come in, that my house may be filled'- as a mandate for forcible conversion. In 1685, Protestant philosopher and critic Pierre Bayle wrote a compelling and thorough critique of this belief, contending that all coercion in religious matters is morally untenable as being inconsistent with reason. His Philosophical Commentary establishes the case against this supposed literal interpretation of Luke 14:23, arguing that reason must govern all interpretations of Scripture. According to Bayle, the erroneous conscience has the same rights as the enlightened one, his central tenet being a doctrine of mutual toleration grounded in a theory of the morality of conscience-namely, that all God requires is that people act on what seems to them to be the truth.
