Hardcover. Terra Uitgeverij, 1st, 2016, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Hardcover, pictorial boards, 248 pages. In the 60s and 70s, Amsterdam was the epicentre of new cultural development and a magnet for national and international celebrities. Dutch photojournalists Hans Sabel and Henk Daniels were on site to capture all events and advancements. 30 years of photojournalism has resulted in an archive of around 150,000 negatives. In cooperation with the heirs of the archive a selection of images has been brought together in this book. It offers many previously unpublished images, from Jacques Brel, Martin Luther King, John Lennon, Charles Aznavour, Elizabeth Taylor and Dutch celebrities like Johan Cruyff, princess Beatrix and prince Bernhard to Willeke Alberti. Starring Amsterdam is a unique photographic document from Amsterdam at a time when the city is alive and buzzing like never before. With a foreword by James Worthy and text by Joost Bastmeijer. Still in publisher's shrinkwrap.

Hardcover. NY, Scalo, 1st, 1997, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover. Black & white photographs of glamorous movie stars, 335 pages. Mostly shot in Monte Carlo. This is one of the most gorgeous collections of classic B&W Hollywood pictures published in a long time. Actually, "Hollywood" isn't exactly accurate, as the late Edward Quinn did most of his work in Europe; most of the photos were taken at Cannes (including, of course, the Cannes Film Festival) or on the Riviera in the 1950's and early 1960's. The book is a huge hardbound with most of the photos in full-page format, and the publishers cleverly printed the captions on a separate pullout (in multiple languages, withal!) so as not to take space away from the pictures.

Shoebox Studio records a moment in a fashion model's career that is rarely seen by a wider public: the model's first "getting-acquainted" photoshoot, in which no attempt is made to beautify or exaggerate her face, pose or expression. Having produced photo campaigns for some of the world's premier beauty clients (Lancome, L'Oreal, Revlon), French photographer and painter Stephane Coutelle is ideally placed to make these portraits of vulnerability and aspiration: his Shoebox Studio sees an unending parade of young women, newly arrived from all over the world and pursuing their first career. His first meeting with a model aims to establish their character and psychology, before professional reflexes take hold, and before complicity is established between photographer and model. Shoebox Studio gathers portraits of aspiring models taken between 2006 and 2010.

Hardcover. St. Paul MN, Borealis Books, 1st, 2004, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 224 pages. The photographs in this collection are taken from the files of the St. Paul Pioneer Press and the St. Paul Dispatch, and span a period from the nineteen-forties to the mid-sixties. Among the many records of long-forgotten civic functions are shocking crime-scene photographs, a reminder of an era when the country's newspaper photographers--an army of Weegees, equipped with oversized Speed Graphic flash cameras and radios tuned to the police scanners--regularly provided readers with lurid coverage of violent crimes and spectacular accidents. There is a harsh intimacy to these photographs, which bring us as close as possible to car-crash victims, suicides, and mass murderers confessing their crimes. But the welter of detail in the pictures--the seamed stockings of a murder victim, the huddle of bystanders after a bar shooting--provides a nuanced portrait of a Midwestern city and of American culture at mid-century.

The street allows photographers to conceal cameras and catch subjects unaware, in informal settings. By contrast, the studio permits both photographers and subjects to present carefully composed images to the world through elaborate staging and technical tricks. In recent years, with celebrities posing in the street and the studio being used for more informal, intimate shots, both traditions have undergone a transformation. This stunning collection features many of the greatest street hotographers of all time--Atget, Brassai, Cartier-Bresson, Arbus, Frank, as well as studio-based artists such as Carlo Ponti, Edward Steichen, Richard Avedon, Annie Leibovitz, and Jurgen Teller.

Hardcover. Dark Horse Books, 1st, 2007, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 216 pages. For 15 years Preston has been photographing cartoonists in their natural habitats, the studios in which they work. Revealing the faces behind the familiar drawings, Preston aims his lenses at artists engaged in virtually every realm of cartooning, including superhero comics (Alex Ross, Todd McFarlane); newspaper strips (Cathy Guisewite, Berke Breathed); alternative and underground comics (R. Crumb, the Hernandez brothers); and animation (Chuck Jones, Joseph Barbera). The best portraits capture the spirit of the subjects' work. Mad mainstay Sergio Aragones is surrounded by toy figurines. Loopy caricaturist Arnold Roth's mug sports a wacky grin. Art Spiegelman, known for his formal mastery of the comics medium, looks dead serious. The studio of gritty urban realist Frank Miller looks out on a brick wall. Most welcome are valedictory portraits of titans in the comics field who have passed on since Preston photographed them, including Will Eisner, Jack Kirby, and Carl Barks. Fans of cartooning and of photographic portraiture should enjoy Preston's evocative images of these often-reclusive figures in their working sanctums.
