A Book of Days
by: Patti Smith

Hardcover. NY, Random House, 1st, 2022, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright, unclipped dust jacket. In 2018, without any plan or agenda for what might happen next, Patti Smith posted her first Instagram photo: her hand with the simple message "Hello Everybody!" Known for shooting with her beloved Land Camera 250, Smith started posting images from her phone including portraits of her kids, her radiator, her boots, and her Abyssinian cat, Cairo. Followers felt an immediate affinity with these miniature windows into Smith's world, photographs of her daily coffee, the books she's reading, the graves of beloved heroes--William Blake, Dylan Thomas, Sylvia Plath, Simone Weil, Albert Camus. Over time, a coherent story of a life devoted to art took shape, and more than a million followers responded to Smith's unique aesthetic in images that chart her passions, devotions, obsessions, and whims. Original to this book are vintage photographs: anniversary pearls, a mother's keychain, and a husband's Mosrite guitar. Here, too, are photos from Smith's archives of life on and off the road, train stations, obscure cafes, a notebook always nearby. In wide-ranging yet intimate daily notations, Smith shares dispatches from her travels around the world. With over 365 photographs taking you through a single year, A Book of Days is a new way to experience the expansive mind of the visionary poet, writer, and performer.

Airports & Stars
by: Vincenzo Mollica

Softcover. Italy, Damiani, 1st, 2005, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, 160 pages. A collection of photographs of Hollywood actors, royalty and other celebrities from the golden age of Italian film--the 1950s and 1960s--arriving in Rome, back when comings and goings were event enough to merit a flash, and when the photographers who are now known as paparazzi could walk right up to the airplane steps. Here those independent lensmen--a profession and a genre born in the era documented here, one on the forefront of new realism and photojournalism--capture the salutes and waves, flamboyant and discreet, of Rome's stars as they descended to earth, seizing the mythical something that they seemed to bring with them from the sky to terra firma. Clean copy.

All About Eve: The Photography of Eve Arnold
by: Eve Arnold

Hardcover. teNeues, 1st, 2012, Book: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket, 216 pages. Eve Arnold didn't even consider photography until a boyfriend gave her a Rolleicord when she was 34. But her talent and daring brought her immediate recognition and she was picked up by Magnum Photos only 5 years later. Arnold may be best known for her black and white images of Marilyn Monroe, but she has chronicled figures as diverse as migrant potato workers and heads of state in addition to screen icons during her assignments, which involved everything from politics, social issues, travel, to current events and a little glamour. Guided by her own words, this volume features Arnold's now iconic photographs as well as many never-before published images. teNeues Press has published this magnificent monograph, with a superb introduction by Liz Jobey who details the important steps in Eve Arnold's life, career and artistic impact.

Among the Celestials: China in Early Photographs
by: Bertholet, Ferdinand M.

Hardcover. New Haven, Mercatorfonds, 1st, 2014, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 224 pages. Like new in publisher's shrink-wrap. The flourishing of photography as a medium in the mid-19th century coincided with a rise in curiosity about China on the part of the Western world. As the number of foreigners living and traveling in China increased, early photographs of China were taken by and for an international audience. Among the Celestials assembles 250 fascinating images of China in the second half of the 19th century and first half of the 20th, captured by the Western camera lens. The photographs portray the gritty side of the country as well as stunning views of palaces, temples, harbors, and gardens. This juxtaposition of the sordid and the serene provides a multidimensional picture of China's physical and social landscape before Mao Zedong's ascent to power changed the country forever. The photographs, many published here for the first time, are both beautiful and moving, and together offer a new understanding of a social and cultural history associated with a time of significant historical change.

Andre Kertesz: Paris, Autumn 1963
by: Andre Kertesz (Author), Matthieu Rivallin (Introduction)

Hardcover. NY, Flammarion, 1st, 2013, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Hardcover, 80 pages illustrated in b&w. A previously unpublished body of work from the late, great photographer Andre Kertesz, featuring a collection of photographs that capture the ephemeral beauty of Paris in 1963. Andre Kertesz, a master photographer of the twentieth century, was a pioneer in photographic composition and photojournalism who gained critical acclaim for his image distortions. Born in Hungary, he moved from Paris to New York during World War II. In 1963, he returned to Paris and took more than 2,000 black-and-white photographs and nearly 500 slides that capture the city's essence--from Montmartre to the banks of the Seine to its gardens and parks. Kertesz edited these photographs into book form, but the work was set aside and was only recently rediscovered in his archives, twenty-five years after his death. The previously unpublished material is reproduced here as he originally intended and completed with archival documents and a critical essay.

Armed America: Portraits of Gun Owners in Their Homes
by: Cassidy, Kyle

Hardcover. Krause Publications, 1st, 2007, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 208 pages. As the 2004 Presidential Election was beginning to take shape, Kyle Cassidy took note of the important role the simple concept of gun ownership was playing. Hardly anyone he knew didn't have an opinion in the debate over owning guns. Why was a constitutionally protected right so heavily debated, and who exactly as these folks that own guns? "I began to wonder who these seventy or so million Americans were, how they lived and what was important to them. I set out to photographs as many gun owners as I could and ask them one question: "Why do you own a gun." Cassidy traveled over 20,000 miles, crisscrossing the country to meet with gun owners in their homes. Cassidy's photo essays create a powerful, thought provoking and sometimes startling view of gun ownership in the U.S. These "everyman" portraits, and the accompanying views of gun owners, fashion a riveting and provocative book.

Ashod Simonian: Real Fun: Polaroids from the Independent Music Landscape
by: Simonian, Ashod

Softcover. New York, PictureBox, 1st, 2007, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, Like new in publishers shrink-wrap. Ever wonder what indie rockers on tour do for the other 23 hours of their day? Real Fun answers that question with over 100 photographs of musicians lounging in the giant green room that is the world--sleeping, eating, fishing and just goofing off. Photographer Ashod Simonian has traveled with scores of bands, and his dreamy, lush Polaroids capture Death Cab for Cutie, Spoon, Sleater Kinney, Pavement, Jenny Lewis, the Shins, Wilco and Broken Social Scene, among many others, in colorful images conveying not just stories but the feelings behind them: boredom, exultation, frustration and bliss. Many of the performers have also contributed essays and memoirs, making this an essential compendium of wisdom and memories from the road. Others have recorded songs for the accompanying CD. The tracks were all selected by Simonian and most are original, recorded especially for this project. All of this is well and good, but what makes Real Fun more than a scrapbook is Simonian's acute photographic instincts, his eye for detail and sense of scene: compelling pictures regardless of the subject.
