Manufacturing Depression: The Secret History of a Modern Disease
by: Greenberg, Gary

Hardcover. NY, Simon & Schuster, 1st, 2010, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket, 432 pages. "Am I happy enough?": This has been a pivotal question since America's inception. Am I not happy enough because I am depressed? is a more recent version. Greenberg shows how depression has been manufactured--not as an illness, but as an idea about our suffering, its source, and its relief. He challenges us to look at depression in a new way. "Greenberg['s] bouts of deep depressions [are] smartly conveyed here, including [his] participation in a clinical trial for an antidepressant...the author engages in extended, illuminating discussions of a host of therapeutic techniques, the confounding power of the placebo effect, the evolution of psychopharmacology and the ways in which expectations shape response. A humanistic, witty exploration of the human response to depression." --Kirkus. Clean copy.

Moral Panic: Changing Concepts of the Child Molester in Modern America
by: Philip Jenkins

Softcover. New Haven CT, Yale University Press, 1st pbk, 1998, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, 302 pages. Philip Jenkins argues that all concepts of sex offenders and offenses are subject to social, political, and ideological influences and that no particular view of offenders represents an unchanging objective reality. He examines the various groups (including mass media) who have been active in promoting particular constructions of the emerging problem, the impact of public attitudes on judicial and legislative responses to these crimes, and the ways in which demographic change, gender politics, and morality campaigns have shaped public opinion. While not minimizing sexual abuse of children, the book thus places reactions to the problem in a broad political and cultural context. Clean copy.

Painting as an Art: The A.W. Mellon Lectures in the Fine Arts 1984 by: Wollheim, Richard

Painting as an Art: The A.W. Mellon Lectures in the Fine Arts 1984
by: Wollheim, Richard

Hardcover. Princeton NJ, Princeton University Press, 1st, 1987, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket, In Painting as an Art, which began as the 1984 Andrew Mellon Lectures at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., philosopher Richard Wollheim transcended the boundaries and habits of both philosophy and art history to produce a large, encompassing vision of viewing art. Wollheim had three great passions--philosophy, psychology, art--and his work attempted to unify them into a theory of the experience of art. He believed that unlocking the meaning of a painting involved retrieving, almost reenacting, the creative activity that produced it.In order to fully appreciate a work of art, Wollheim argued, critics must bring to the understanding of a work of art a much richer conception of human psychology than they have in the past: "Many [critics] . . . make do with a psychology that, if they tried to live their lives by it, would leave them at the end of an ordinary day without lovers, friends, or any insight into how this came about." Many reviewers have remarked on the insightfulness of the book's final chapter, in which Wollheim contended that certain paintings by Titian, Bellini, de Kooning, and others represent the painters' attempts to project fantasies about the human body onto the canvas. Light fading to dj spine. Name on front fly leaf, otherwise clean.

Philosopher-Kings: The Argument of Plato's Republic
by: C.D.C. Reeve

Hardcover. Princeton NJ, Princeton University Press, 1st, 1988, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a dust jacket, dark green cloth covers with gilt title on spine. 350 pages. The distinctive aim of Philosopher-Kings is to show, by giving a rational reconstruction of its overall argument, that the Republic is not the flawed patchwork it is usually made out to be by interpreters, but a deeply consistent and systematic work, which raises fundamental problems for philosophy and develops powerful and probing solutions to them. The book's central innovative thesis is that Plato's psychology, more specifically his theory of desires, holds the key to this, his most ambitious work. "Although the Republic has come to seem frazzled from too much use in introductory courses, in Reeve's hands it is new and refreshing".--Paul Woodruff, Ancient Philosophy "Although the philosopher-kings of Reeve's title are central to the argument of this handsomely produced book, it is in reality nothing less than a complete reinterpretation of the Republic. PhotoTherapy Techniques: Exploring the Secrets of Personal Snapshots and Family Album
by: Weiser, Judy

Hardcover. San Francisco, Jossey-Bass , 1st, 1993, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 384 pages, b&w illustrations. In this book, Judy Weiser shows how mental health professionals can use clients' personal photos and family albums as catalysts for therapeutic communication. She reveals how initiating a dialogue based on such personally symbolic artistic expressions gives form to feelings which otherwise might be resistant to verbal investigations. She shows how to use this dialogue to stimulate recall of forgotten, blocked, or denied information and memories, and to apply these insights to an effective therapeutic framework. A comprehensive guide to PhotoTherapy, this book provides the theoretical principles, detailed techniques, anecdotal illustrations, and practical exercises that will help mental health professionals apply this approach in practice. Looking at all types of photographs - whether they are ones that clients respond to, collect, pose for, or create - Weiser describes various ways to engage clients with photographic imagery. Providing several examples from actual cases to illustrate how clients' responses to photographs can be integrated into the therapeutic process, she offers practitioners a powerful therapeutic tool, regardless of their particular theoretical orientation.
