Land, Sky, and All That Is Within: Visionary Photographers in the Southwest
by: James L. Enyeart

Softcover. Santa Fe, Museum of New Mexico Press, 1st, 1998, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, 126 pages. The American Southwest has shaped the lives and work of many artists and literary figures over the last century--Georgia O'Keeffe, D. H. Lawrence, N. Scott Momaday, to name a few--individuals unquestionably drawn to the unrivaled landscape, moved to express its beauty through the written word or through their art, and forever altered by the experience. The survey of photographers and photography in the Southwest between 1870 and 1970 begins with Timothy O'Sullivan and other late nineteenth-century expedition photographers and ends with the color landscape photography of Eliot Porter. In between are Laura Gilpin's portraits of Navajos taken during the 1930s and the documentary images of rural Hispanic communities by Farm Security Administration photographers John Collier Jr. and Russell Lee in the 1940s. Nineteen photographers in all are represented--also including Ansel Adams, Paul Strand, Edward Weston--along with 102 photographs. Clean copy.

Massacre at Wickenburg: Arizona's Greatest Mystery
by: Wilson, R. Michael

Softcover. Guilford CT, TwoDot, 1st, 2008, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, 151 pages, b&w illustrations. The massacre at Wickenburg was one of the most notorious crimes committed in the Wild West--a story revealed in this book through a criminal investigation. November 5, 1871. A westbound stagecoach carrying seven men and one woman left Wickenburg in the early morning hours. At 8:00 a.m., six of the passengers were shot dead. One man and the lone woman, severely wounded, escaped into the desert. Debates raged over the identity of the murderous ambushers -- Indians? Mexican bandits? The two survivors? After a massive investigation, the U.S. Army concluded that a band of local Yavapai Indians were responsible, which led to a policy of "removal and concentration" that altered the fate of nearly every Indian in America's Southwest. Mexico's Indigenous Past (The Civilization of the American Indian Series) (Volume 240)
by: Austin, Alfredo Lopez / Leonardo Lopez Lujan

Hardcover. Norman OK, University of Oklahoma Press, 1st, 2001, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket, 348 pages, b&w illustrations. This handsomely illustrated book offers a panoramic view of ancient Mexico, beginning more than thirty thousand years ago and ending with European occupation in the sixteenth century. Drawing on archaeological and ethnohistorical sources, the book is one of the first to offer a unified vision of Mexico's precolonial past. Typical histories of Mexico focus on the prosperity and accomplishments of Mesoamerica, located in the southern half of Mexico, due to the wealth of records about the glorious past of this region. Mesoamerica was only one of three cultural superareas of ancient Mexico, however, all interlinked by complex economic and social relationships. Tracing the large social transformations that took place from the earliest hunter-gatherer times to the Postclassic states, the authors describe the ties between the three superareas of ancient Mexico, which stretched from present-day Costa Rica to what is now the southwestern United States. According to the authors, these superareas-Mesoamerica, Aridamerica, and Oasisamerica - cannot be viewed as independent entities. Instead, they must be considered as a whole to understand the complex reality of Mexico's past.

by: John W. Bennett

Softcover. Arlington Heights, IL, AHM Publishing, 4th pr., 1969, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, 352 pages, b&w illustrations. This is a study in cultural ecology involving the adaptive processes and relations of four groups: Plains Cree, cattle ranchers, wheat farmers, and Hutterites of southwestern Saskatchewan over a sixty year period.... Bennett has aptly demonstrated the falsity of the belief that anthropologists can learn nothing from a study of their own culture. The book merits reading by all those who are interested in ecology, economic anthropology, and culture change and is a significant addition to the relatively meager amount of anthropological information on Western culture.
