Observations in an Occupied Wilderness: Photographs by Terry Falke
by: Falke and Carol McCusker, Terry

Hardcover. San Francisco, Chronicle Books, 1st, 2006, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 120 pages, color photos. Terry Falke's wry, lyrical photographs center on the terrain of the American Southwest and the ubiquity of humanity s imprint on it. The images in Observations in an Occupied Wilderness both honor and subvert the grand tradition of western landscape photography, conveying the bleak splendor of the land and Falke's sheer love of looking. Gorgeous, sardonic, and playful, Falke's work emphasizes beauty and incongruity, and is as much about human nature as it is about the land. Shot with a large-format camera, the resultant images are personal and provocative, raising as many questions than they answer. This remarkable debut monograph is a shrewd exploration of our last wild places.

Open Range and Parking Lots: Southwest Photographs
by: Hancock, Virgil and Gregory McNamee

Softcover. Albuquerque, University of New Mexico Press, 1st, 1999, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, oblong format, color photos. The end of the twentieth century represents an unsettled time, and the contemporary Southwest, as seen by Virgil Hancock III in these fifty-two exquisite color photographs, is a strange place full of omens and signs. His images peer beyond the scenery, beyond the tourism-council view of this region as a storied land of golf courses and climate-controlled shopping centers. He gets at the soul of the Southwest, of the nation, and, in his best photographs, at the human condition itself, seizing on the accidental symbols that speak to our yearnings and shortfalls: skyward-pointing arrows and crosses and dreams just beyond reach at Indian casinos, failed department stores, retirement cities. He photographs signs of the violence that has been endemic to the region and shows us ruins, not of the Anasazi or Spanish missions, but of commercialization, scarcely twenty years old, already gone belly-up.

Pawlet for One Hundred Years
by: Heil Hollister

Hardcover. Albany NY, J. Munsell, 1st, 1867, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Hardcover in brick red cloth with gilt lettering on the spine, 272 pages. Brown endpapers. Front hinge lightly cracked. Several early pages have foxing. A previous owner numbered in the margin, in light pencil, each sketch, ending with 429, and also noted with small light pencil lines, several men listed in "Names of Soldiers". Still a very nice copy of a first printing, 1867. A fascinating account of the first century of Pawlet, Vermont, a small farming community in southwestern Vermont. Memories of the Civil War were still fresh when this bountiful history was written. The first half of the book contains material on early settlement, the American Revolution (including some military correspondence, accounts of Burgoyne's defeat at Bennington, and a list of Revolutionary soldiers who settled in Pawlet), the War of 1812 (with a list of Pawlet soldiers), an extensive list of men who fought in the Civil War and brief histories of the local militia and Civil War regiments. Chapters are included on local government and politics (including lists of names of officials), emigration, customs and observances, names of merchants, physicians and lawyers, census figures, anti-slavery sentiment, railroads, church histories and other subjects, replete with names and dates. The second half of the book consists of family histories, presented as an alphabetical series of biographical sketches. These short narratives often note date and place of birth, occupation, spouse, children, military service, age and cause of death.

Rhyolite: The True Story of a Ghost Town
by: Diane Siebert / David Frampton (Illustrator)

Hardcover. NY, Clarion Books, 1st, 2003, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 32 pages. Handsome woodcuts are the highlight of this rhyming story about the boomtown of Rhyolite, which sprang up almost overnight in 1904 after two men discovered gold in southwestern Nevada. The population quickly reached 10,000, then dwindled to almost nothing in a few years, following a financial panic. Frampton's woodcuts, more intricate than much of his previous work, suit the historical tale with their rustic feeling and glowing palette of oranges, browns, and golds. Small school stamp to bottom of title page, otherwise bright and clean.

Southwest Passage: The Yanks in the Pacific
by: Lardner, John

Softcover. Lincoln NE, University of Nebraska Press, 1st, 2013, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover. At a time when few Americans had visited Australia, journalist John Lardner sailed down under with the U.S. armed forces as one of the first American war correspondents in the Pacific theater. With his excellent sense of humor and gift for narrative, Lardner penned vignettes of MacArthur's arrival and his reception in Melbourne and a flight with the daring Dutch flier Capt. Hans Smits. More frequently, Lardner wrote about the ordinary day and the average person. Traveling throughout the country, in Southwest Passage Lardner offers a glimpse of Australia in the 1940s and generates warmth and admiration for World War II fighters in the Pacific, whether Australian, New Zealander, aboriginal, or American. Storms Brewed in Other Men's Worlds
by: Elizabeth A.H. John

Hardcover. College Station, Texas A&M University Press, 1st, 1975, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket with a small tape repair, 805 pages. The Confrontation of Indians, Spanish, and French in the Southwest, 1540-1795. Spanning two and a half centuries, from the earliest contacts in the 1540s to the crumbling of Spanish power in the 1790s. Storms Brewed in Other Men's Worlds is a panoramic view of Indian peoples and Spanish and French intruders in the early Southwest. The primary focus is the world of the American Indian, ranging from the Caddos in the east to the Hopis in the west, and including the histories of the Pueblo, Apache, Navajo, Ute, and Wichita peoples. Within this region, from Texas to New Mexico, the Comanches played a key, formative role, and no less compelling is the story of the Hispanic frontier peoples who weathered the precarious, often arduous process of evolving coexistence with the Indians on the northern frontier of New Spain. The Art of Tom Lea: A Memorial Edition by: Kathleen G. Hjerter, William Weber Johnson, et al.

The Art of Tom Lea: A Memorial Edition
by: Kathleen G. Hjerter, William Weber Johnson, et al.

Hardcover. Texas A&M University Press;, 1st, 2003, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 276 pages. Tom Lea was a realist who painted things as they are, but just happened to see more of what they are than most of us do. A muralist, painter, book illustrator, World War II artist-correspondent, historian, novelist, and humanist, Lea died in 2001 after creating in some sixty years a corpus of work that has captivated those who know it. This volume makes available the full range of his vigorous work. Old admirers of Lea's talents will delight in this presentation, and a whole new generation will be awed by the unique contribution he has made. A Southwesterner from multicultural El Paso, Lea gave new vision to the misunderstood lands often thought of as barren wastes. As Kathleen G. Hjerter says in her foreword, in his paintings "the desert's melded colors are vibrant under many subtle gradations of light; the mesas and mountains reach up to a sky enormous enough to hold everyone's soul." But it is not just the southwest. its life and lore that Lea knew. Any subject he portrayed in picture or words (he wrote several outstanding books, including The Wonderful Country) he first researched minutely. Thus, he brought marvelous detail to his portrayal of the Mexican bullfighter, the Australian ranches and Texas cattle of the King empire, and the Indians, pioneers, and ranch hands of his own corner of the world. In the Second World War, as an artist-correspondent for Life magazine, he captured both the weaponry and the emotions of war. On assignment in China he developed a love for that land that gave him not only many subjects for paintings but also his favorite and, in later years, most characteristic medium: Chinese ink applied with a fine brush. This is a heavy and oversized book and will require extra shipping. International customers please ask for a shipping quote before purchasing.
