The Art of Bloomsburyby: Shone, Richard

The Art of Bloomsbury
by: Shone, Richard

Softcover. London, Tate Gallery, 1999, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, 296 pages, illustrated in color and b&w. Wonderfully written and illustrated account of the work of the Bloomsbury artists, Vanessa Bell, Duncan Grant and Roger Fry. Contains detailed chronologies of their lives. Catalogue entries on two hundred works, all illustrated in color, bring out the chief characteristics of Bloomsbury painting--domestic, contemplative, sensuous, and essentially pacific. These are seen in landscapes, portraits, and still lifes set in London, Sussex, and the South of France, as well as in the abstract painting and applied art that placed these artists at the forefront of the avant-garde before the First World War. Portraits of family and friends--from Virginia Woolf and Maynard Keynes to Aldous Huxley and Edith Sitwell--highlight the cultural and social setting of the group. Essays by leading scholars provide further insights into the works and the changing critical reaction to them, exploring friendships and relationships both within and outside of Bloomsbury, as well as the movement's wider social, economic, and political. Clean, bright copy.

The Art of Romare Beardenby: Bearden, Romare and Ruth E. Fine, Mary Lee Corlett

The Art of Romare Bearden
by: Bearden, Romare and Ruth E. Fine, Mary Lee Corlett

Softcover. Washington DC, National Gallery of Art , 2nd pr., 203, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, 334 pages illustrated with 224 color plates, 86 black & white. One of America's most innovative artists, Romare Bearden (1911-1988) made colorful and passionate images that reflected his life in a time of creative ferment. His influences ranged from the old masters to African art, as well as the world around him: popular religion and ritual, jazz clubs and brothels, the history and literature of his time, and the places he lived (the rural South, Pittsburgh and Harlem, the Caribbean island of St. Martin). The resulting images are fresh and evocative, filled with quirky details and rhythmic forms. This authoritative and beautiful book, which accompanies a major retrospective opening at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., provides a provocative and absorbing look at a beloved artist. The Art of Romare Bearden showcases compelling examples of his pioneering work: complex collages and photostats; watercolors, gouaches, and oils; little-known landscapes; his only known sculpture; costume designs; and book illustrations. Mildwear to corners otherwise very good, clean copy.

by: Tracey Moffatt, Brigitte Reinhardt, Stefan Berg, Alexander Tolnay

Hardcover. GR, Hatje Cantz, 1st, 2000, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Hardcover, pictorial boards, oblong format, 80 pages. The Australian artist Tracey Moffatt is among the most carefully watched younger figures on the international scene. Of Aboriginal descent, Moffatt focuses on themes of the other, the unknown, the outcast, and the marginal. In her photographs and videos, she shows the complex interweaving of human relationships, forged by ethnic, social, and gender differences. Moffatt does not, however, aim to capture reality but to create her own reality. In her photographic work, the past, present, and future of the protagonists seem to gel together into a surreal simultaneity. Text in English and German by Brigitte Reinhardt, Stephan Berg, and Alexander Tolnay. Includes color and black and white illustrations. Clean copy.

Un Paese: Portrait of an Italian Villageby: Zavattini, Cesare/Paul Strand

Un Paese: Portrait of an Italian Village
by: Zavattini, Cesare/Paul Strand

Hardcover. New York, Aperture, 1st US, 1997, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, 104 pages. Hardcover with dust jacket. Very clean, unmarked copy with only minor edgewear. Published in Italian in 1955, and now available for the first time in the English language, Un Paese captures in photographs and in spoken testimony the essential experience of daily life in Luzzara. It presents a series of intense portraits, graceful landscapes, and images of everyday objects. Paul Strand's photographs are carefully distilled, deeply powerful; they contain the flavors and the rhythms of an entire culture crystallized in a single village. Zavattini successfully synthesizes text and image, aligning with the new cinematic trend of the day, a movement known as Italian neorealism. Their Luzzara is an ordinary village, neither overly picturesque nor greatly unusual, yet it is a town sustained by a grounded humanity and a profound love for the land by its people.
