Oscar Wilde's America: Counterculture in the Gilded Age

Light sun-fade along dust jacket spine. Clean, tight copy. Touring America as the "Apostle of Aestheticism" in 1882, Oscar Wilde brought a witty and controversial message of regeneration through art and beauty to a nation still shaken by the trauma of the Civil War. Blanchard shows that it was a wide-ranging popular movement resisted by the moral guardians of Victorianism but advanced by visionary women.

Pure Heart: The Faith of a Father and Son in the War for a More Perfect Union (SIGNED COPY)
by: William F. Quigley

Hardcover. Kent State University Press, 2nd pr., 2016, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket, 381 pages. SIGNED BY THE AUTHOR on the title page. In the summer of 1862, as Union morale ebbed low with home front division over war costs, coming emancipation, and demoralizing battlefield losses, 24-year-old William White Dorr enlisted as a lieutenant in the 121st Pennsylvania Volunteers, a new Union regiment organizing in Philadelphia. His father, the Reverend Benjamin Dorr, rector of Christ Church, Philadelphia, strived to prevent divisions in his congregation from sundering that Episcopal church historically tied to the nation's founding. William F. Quigley Jr. presents a narrative that remarkably encapsulates much of the North's experience of the war. Reverend Benjamin Dorr was one of the most important clergymen of the era, who strived to hold his warring parishioners intact. His efforts paralleled Lincoln's far greater but comparable challenge to preserve the Union. Clean copy.

Superweapon: The Making of MX (SIGNED COPY)
by: John Edwards

Hardcover. NY, W W Norton & Co., 1st, 1982, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket, 287 pages. Since its inception in 1970, MX has been fiercely debated in the White House, the Pentagon, and on Capitol Hill. President Jimmy Carter called it, initially, "the craziest thing I ever heard," and yet only two years later, caught up in the implacable logic of the nuclear arms race, he would approve an expanded budget for its development. John Edwards interviewed all the major actors in this drama, and through his incisive portraits of the scientists, politicians and generals who control the weapons community, he shows how policy grows out of their personal and ideological conflicts. by: Puleo, Stephen

Hardcover. Westholme Publishing, 1st, 2012, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket, 374 pages, b&w illustrations. Bright, clean. INSCRIBED BY AUTHOR on title page. "Early in the afternoon of May 22, 1856, ardent pro-slavery Congressman Preston S. Brooks of South Carolina strode into the United States Senate Chamber in Washington, D.C., and began beating renowned anti-slavery Senator Charles Sumner with a cane until it splintered and the helpless Massachusetts senator lay unconscious and covered in blood. One of the most shocking and provocative events in American history, the caning convinced each side that the gulf between them was unbridgeable and that they could no longer discuss their vast differences of opinion regarding slavery on any reasonable level."

The Year the Dream Died; Revisiting 1968 in America (SIGNED COPY)
by: Jules Witcover

Hardcover. NY, Warner Books, 1st, 1997, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright, unclipped dust jacket. 544 pages. SIGNED BY WITCOVER on the front fly leaf. Together with Jack Germond, Witcover co-wrote "Politics Today," a five-day-a-week syndicated column, for over 24 years. Witcover began working in Washington for Newhouse Newspapers in 1954. He was reportedly steps away from where Robert F. Kennedy was shot in 1968. He was also one of the reporters featured in the 1972 book on campaign journalism, The Boys on the Bus, and eventually came to be seen as a "journalistic institution," according to media critic Howard Kurtz. Witcover draws on reminiscences by Al Gore, John Ehrlichman, Allard Lowenstein, and George McGovern, among others, to chronicle the year 1968. Witcover's narrative acquires depth when he recalls his own experiences as a reporter, reliving the good old days of seemingly unlimited expense accounts and one-on-one interviews with the politicos of the day. Autographed Copy sticker on front cover, otherwise clean.
