by: Topliss, Iain

Softcover. Baltimore MD, Johns Hopkins University Press, 1st, 2007, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, 326 pages, b/w illustrations, softcover. These 4 cartoonists worked at the New Yorker between 1925 and 1975, mocking the status quo without alienating that magazine's readers. For many aficionados of the New Yorker magazine, the drawings of Peter Arno, William Steig, Charles Addams, and Saul Steinberg epitomize its sophisticated wit and disarming humor. In The Comic Worlds of Peter Arno, William Steig, Charles Addams, and Saul Steinberg, the first full-scale scholarly study of the subject, Iain Topliss considers the work of each artist, traces the development of his art, and recalls the cultural and social context in which it was created.

Comics Art
by: Gravett, Paul

Hardcover. NY/London, Tate Publishing, 1st, 2013, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, 144 pages, illustrated throughout in color and b&w. Clean, tight copy. In this richly illustrated and accessible survey, acclaimed author Paul Gravett considers the vast output of comics culture from the late 19th century to today, including syndicated comics, graphic novels, and contemporary art and illustration. From foundational masterpieces such as Rodolphe Topffer's and Wilhelm Busch's albums, George McManus's Art Deco "Bringing Up Father," and Alex Raymond's "Flash Gordon" to the later retro stylings of Robert Crumb, Gravett considers lines of influence from around the world and examines how comics have shifted from supporting the status quo to becoming the voice of alternative subcultures. Gravett traces the major themes taking place in contemporary comics, noting the rise of publications that function as questioning, transgressive outlets for outsider stories and ideas, and includes the ways that folk art traditions are reinvigorating the form.

Comics Art
by: Gravett, Paul

Hardcover. London, Tate Publishing, 1st, 2013, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, 144 pages. Hardcover with no dust jacket. A very clean, unmarked copy with only minor edgewear. Richly illustrated with many images taken from original artwork and rare artefacts, Comics Art gives a fascinating, accessible guide to some of the special properties of sequential art, such as panels, page layouts, speech balloons and wordless or 'silent' narration. It addresses concerns about how comics perpetuate stereotypes and support the status quo, while assessing their growing significance, notably through autobiography and reportage, as vehicles for provocative voices often silenced in other media. Comics Art also explores the diversity of styles, media and approaches now possible in the medium and exciting developments in digital comics and in comics conceived for galleries and installations.

Complete Maus, The
by: Spiegelman, Art

Hardcover. New York , Pantheon, reprint, 1997, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 296 pages, b&w illustrations by Spiegelman. Maus is a holocaust survival story, a biography, and an autobiography. Written as a graphic novel (and winner of a Pulitzer Prize), Art Spiegelman captures the process of interviewing his father while simultaneously telling his father's story. In that sense, the text is very self-reflexive - there are parts in it showing Spiegelman working to create the very page you read, as previous parts of the his father's story are reintroduced from previous portions of the text. The story is complex. It not only details the horrors of the holocaust and the extreme lengths to which people went to survive, but it also captures the harrowing guilt survivors faced, and the lifelong aftereffects of the war. It also shows the struggle between father and son, both through the lens of a typical familial challenge, and of those unique between a survivor and child born afterwards.

Cosmigraphics: Picturing Space Through Time
by: Michael Benson

Hardcover. NY, Harry N. Abrams, 2nd pr., 2014, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket. 320 pages, 9.9x1.2x12.3 inches. Color illustrations throughout. Michael Benson, one of the world's leading authorities on the visual legacy of space exploration and astronomy, tells a riveting story of the discovery of the universe through pictures. Selecting strikingly powerful and intriguing illustrations and maps, many hidden away in the world's great science libraries and virtually unknown today, he chronicles more than three thousand years of humanity's ever-expanding understanding of the size, shape and visual texture of the cosmos from the planets of our Solar System to the Milky Way and to the large-scale structure of the greater universe, with its teeming swarms of galaxies. These illustrations - some are maps, some are diagrams, some are speculative works of representation- are among history's most powerfully compelling works of data visualization, an art that is increasingly necessary in today's data-intensive world. Softcover. London, Unicorn Press Ltd, 1st, 2015, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, 96 pages. Softcover. Very clean, unmarked copy with only minor wear to wrapper edges. Many color illustrations and photographs throughout. Artist David Shillinglaw is as comfortable in the street as in the studio, as likely to paint on found objects as on canvas, as interested in tiny hand-made artist's books as in large-scale public murals. His mural in the Olympic Park in East London is the longest mural ever commissioned in Great Britain, while his brilliantly inventive creations enliven construction hoardings throughout London's changing cityscape. The Dance of 1000 Faces is the first book to gather a significant number of Shillinglaw's works. It presents his art in full color in all its many forms: not only paintings and murals, but journals drawings, sketches, and more. It reveals Shillinglaw's particular genius for depictions--and distortions--of the human face, grimacing and grinning, shifting and shaping as it becomes no one and everyone at once.

Danger Is My Businessby: Lee Server

Danger Is My Business
by: Lee Server

Softcover. San Francisco, Chronicle Books, 1st, 1993, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, 144 pages. An illustrated history of the fabulous pulp magazines from 1896 to 1953. After tracing the birth of the pulps back to the 1882 launching of Golden Argosy magazine, printed on pulpwood pages, Server organizes his unwieldy subject into categories of pulps: adventure, romance and sex, horror and fantasy, private eye, weird menace, science fiction. Each receives a lively capsule history that covers trends, reader (and sometimes, as in the case of the ``Spicys,'' government) response, and writers' bios--which, though sketchy (Hammett's Hollywood experience gets one sentence), resurrect a number of relatively obscure but seminal and fascinating figures, like Conan- creator Robert E. Howard, who shot himself dead at age 30 on the day his mother died, and Frederick Faust (a.k.a. Max Brand), who sometimes wrote around the clock, piling up two or three million words a year. Server attributes the pulps' demise to, among other factors, the advent of TV, paperbacks, and comic books, and he winds up with a note on pulp-collecting. For all of the author's savvy, though, it's above all the eye- popping illustrations (100 color, 57 b&w) that will have readers beaming. Magazine covers (some lurid, some of eerie beauty), sample pages of text and ads (``Raise Giant Frogs'')--the pulps come alive once again here, in all their eccentric glory.

Softcover. Seattle, Fantagraphics, 1st, 2008, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, 184 pages. Presenting a new type of graphic fiction from a legendary family in American cartooning. Underground cartoonist Kim Deitch has recruited his entire cast of siblings to produce a unique, all-new "picto-fiction" pocket book. Third up is "Unlikely Hours," a paranoid picto-story about a conspiracy of sentient rats written by Seth and illustrated by Kim. Next comes "The Golem," once again written by Seth and decorated with a series of superb pencil illustrations by Simon, a prose novella about the mythical Jewish monster/protector. Kim wraps with "The Cop on the Beat, the Man in the Moon and Me," one last comic - this one autobiographical.
