Saul Bass: A Life in Film and Designby: Jennifer Bass , Pat Kirkham , et al.

Saul Bass: A Life in Film and Design
by: Jennifer Bass , Pat Kirkham , et al.

Hardcover. London, Laurence King, 1st, 2011, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 428 pages. This is the first book to be published on one of the greatest American designers of the 20th Century, who was as famous for his work in film as for his corporate identity and graphic work. With more than 1,400 illustrations, many of them never published before and written by the leading design historian Pat Kirkham, this is the definitive study that design and film enthusiasts have been eagerly anticipating. Saul Bass (1920-1996) created some of the most compelling images of American post-war visual culture. Having extended the remit of graphic design to include film titles, he went on to transform the genre. His best known works include a series of unforgettable posters and title sequences for films such as Alfred Hitchcock's Vertigo and Otto Preminger's The Man With The Golden Arm and Anatomy of a Murder. He also created some of the most famous logos and corporate identity campaigns of the century, including those for major companies such as AT&T, Quaker Oats, United Airlines and Minolta. His wife and collaborator, Elaine, joined the Bass office in the late 1950s. Together they created an impressive series of award-winning short films, including the Oscar-winning Why Man Creates, as well as an equally impressive series of film titles, ranging from Stanley Kubrick s Spartacus in the early 1960s to Martin Scorsese s Cape Fear and Casino in the 1990s. Designed by Jennifer Bass, Saul Bass's daughter and written by distinguished design historian Pat Kirkham who knew Saul Bass personally, this book is full of images from the Bass archive, providing an in depth account of one of the leading graphic artists of the 20th century.

Saul Steinberg Illuminationsby: Smith, Joel & Steinberg, Saul

Saul Steinberg Illuminations
by: Smith, Joel & Steinberg, Saul

Softcover. New Haven CT, Yale University Press, 1st, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, stiff card wrappers firm and clean; Binding tight; Pages bright, internally clean, no ownership markings or annotations, illustrated with color and b&w plates, 9.1 X 6.1 X 0.8 inches; 287 pages. Best known for his barbed and brilliant art for The New Yorker, Saul Steinberg (1914-1999) did much more. He executed public murals, designed fabrics and stage sets, was an inventive collagist and printmaker, and turned his magic touch to the fields of painting, sculpture, advertising, and even wartime propaganda. This is the first comprehensive look at Steinberg's extraordinary contribution to 20th-century art, which was that of a modern-day illuminator, putting word and image in play to create art that spoke to the eyes, and minds, of readers. Previously unseen sketches, documents, and printed matter from the artist's papers illustrate the essay, career chronology, and entries for 120 objects featured in this important book.

Sex, Rock & Optical Illusions
by: Moscoso, Victor

Hardcover. Seattle, Fantagraphics Books, 1st, 2006, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 144 pages. Sex, Rock 'N' Roll, & Optical Illusions is Victor Moscoso's first major, career-spanning retrospective, from his earliest poster work in 1966 to his most recent graphic experimentation. Optical Illusions contains his best posters that advertised bands playing in San Francisco's famous dance ballrooms of the time - the Avalon, the Matrix, and the Fillmore - as well as many of his Zap Comix contributions, and his solo comix work, many in Moscoso's signature color. This wide-ranging career retrospective - Moscoso's famous technique employing "vibrating colors" that he pioneered in his posters is impeccably reproduced with as much fidelity to the original as modern printing can achieve, his black-and-white and full color comix work is collected here for the first time - is an intense, vibrant, and revelatory experience. Skippy Volume 1: Complete Dailies 1925-1927by: Crosby, Percy

Skippy Volume 1: Complete Dailies 1925-1927
by: Crosby, Percy

Hardcover. US, IDW Publishing, 1st, 2012, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Hardcover, 328 pages. Like new in publisher's shrink-wrap. Skippy debuted as a daily newspaper strip in 1925, and as a Sunday the following year, soon becoming a sensation, published in 28 countries and 14 languages. Crosby continued writing and drawing the feature until 1945. "Percy Crosby caught lightning in a bottle and learned how to draw with it," wrote Jules Feiffer in a 1978 appreciation. Milton Caniff marveled, "Boy, there's nothing faster than watching Skippy run the way Crosby drew him." Crosby was heralded as "the greatest apostle of motion in the field of art" by Edward Alden Jewell, art critic of the New York Times. His artwork has hung in the Louvre in Paris, the Corcoran Gallery in Washington, and the Tate Gallery in London, among other venues, but it's his work as a cartoonist, as the creator of Skippy--the philosopher man-child--for which he's best known. Volume 1 includes every Skippy daily strip from the beginning--June 22, 1925 through the end of 1927--as well as the start of an extensive, ongoing biography of Percy Crosby by Jared Gardner, complemented by many photographs and rare artwork from the collection of the cartoonist's daughter, Joan Crosby Tibbetts.

Strange Suspense: The Steve Ditko Archives (Vol. 1)by: Ditko/Blake Bell, Steve

Strange Suspense: The Steve Ditko Archives (Vol. 1)
by: Ditko/Blake Bell, Steve

Hardcover. Seattle, Fantagraphics Books, 1st, 2009, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Hardcover, pages. Before Spider-Man, the legendary comic-book artist Steve Ditko drew horror comics that were not yet hobbled by the Comics Code Authority (adopted in Oct. '54). These graphic stories featured bloodshed, dismemberment and the ugly ends of the lives of the twisted inhabitants of Steve Ditko's imagination. Following up on Strange and Stranger: The World of Steve Ditko, Blake Bell's 2008 best-selling critical retrospective of Ditko's career, The Best of Steve Ditko Vol. 1 will, for the first time, feature spectacular full-color reprints of every story from those first two years of his career. Beginning with Ditko's very first story, readers will see the initial works of an artist already at a level of craftsmanship that exceeded most of his peers'. The book will also feature editor Bell's insightful historical notes.

Streetcar Advertising in Americaby: Woodson J. Savage III

Streetcar Advertising in America
by: Woodson J. Savage III

Hardcover. Croydon UK, Fonthill Media, 1st, 2016, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket, 160 pages. You might be surprised to learn that many of the consumer brands and products we enjoy today exist because of streetcar advertising. The Industrial Revolution of the early 1900's and a massive consumer audience riding over 50,000 streetcars in nearly 3,000 cities and towns in every state of the union provided a great opportunity for Barron Collier, a native of Memphis, Tennessee. He simply used streetcar advertising to bring these two forces together and created the largest streetcar advertising empire in the world. By age twenty-six, he was a millionaire and at one time had business offices in 70 cities with business interests in more than a thousand cities. Most of these advertising cards have remarkable color graphics; over 250 of them are included in this book for your viewing pleasure. While streetcar advertising is definitely not a major advertising medium today, the advertising community might be surprised to learn that the basic principles of consumer advertising have not changed that much in the last one hundred years. Investors might do well to review this book to see which companies are still producing these popular products and brands as they represent some of the most successful businesses in America today.
