I Am Almost Always Hungry
by: Cahan & Associates

Softcover. NY, Princeton Architectural Press, 1st, 2000, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, 262 pages. The designers at San Francisco-based design firm Cahan & Associates, in their hunger for fresh ideas, find inspiration in the most unexpected places, such as an oddly sculptural piece of discarded metal in the alley near their office, or a conversation with an elaborately tattooed bicycle messenger. From these eclectic ingredients the office serves up in-your-face graphics that are exceptional for their visceral impact yet still convey the strategic thinking behind each piece. The firm's working methods, involving extensive exploration, collaborations, and play, are documented in this monograph through interviews with founder Bill Cahan, clients, and vendors; writings by colleagues; photo essays; proposals to clients that were accepted and rejected; and finished pieces, providing a portrait of a firm for whom process is just as important as product. I Am Stan: A Graphic Biography of the Legendary Stan Leeby: Scioli, Tom

I Am Stan: A Graphic Biography of the Legendary Stan Lee
by: Scioli, Tom

Softcover. NY, Ten Speed Graphic, 1st, 2023, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, 201 pages. Everyone knows Stan Lee: His work at the creative helm of Marvel Comics resulted in the creation of many of the superheroes we know and love today, including Spider-Man, Iron Man, Black Panther, Doctor Strange, and more. During his decades-long career at Marvel, Lee turned the comic book publisher into a cultural juggernaut that shaped and defined the burgeoning industry. In I Am Stan, critically acclaimed artist Tom Scioli reveals the man behind the comics and cameos using the same medium Stan Lee revolutionized. This stunning graphic novel takes readers from his early days in the comics industry through his rise at Marvel (then Timely Comics), where his career was touched by other iconic creatives including Jack Kirby and Joe Simon. Their collaboration would lead to the creation of the most iconic superheroes of today, and bring about the Marvel Age of the 60's and 70's that introduced new industry stars like Steve Ditko, and John Buscema. Readers will follow Lee's trajectory from his daily life at Marvel to his later years as a spokesperson for the company and for comics as a whole, and finally to his last years away from the spotlight. Scioli provides a clear-eyed view of Lee's triumphs at Marvel as well as the controversies that surrounded the creator at the end of his life. Clean copy.

Jack Cole's Deadly Horror: The Chilling Archives of Horror Volume 4by: Cole, Jack

Jack Cole's Deadly Horror: The Chilling Archives of Horror Volume 4
by: Cole, Jack

Hardcover. US, IDW Publishing, 1st, 2013, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Like new in publisher's shrink-wrap. Hardcover issued w/o a dust jacket. Jack Cole's often overlooked horror work finally gets the hardcover treatment. The stories hit many of the usual horror themes, and a few unique ones, with many based in the crime genre. Cole brings his own outlook to the idiom; casually violent and gruesome, with kinetic artwork and splash panels/pages that will knock your socks off. Offered chronologically, the earlier stories outshine most of the later ones. The best ones are "borrowed" from a couple of "Weird Tales" authors- "Custodian of the Dead" (Henry Kuttner's "Graveyard Rats") and "The Corpse That Wouldn't Die" (Clark Ashton Smith's "The Return of the Sorcerer"). Cole's own stories are pretty original, compared to the mostly ho-hum output of contemporaries like Stan Lee's ATLAS line, and he doesn't try to imitate the EC horror comics like 99% of the rest of the field did. Some of the stories are ludicrous and will make you roll your eyes ("Goddess of Murder" especially), but it's refreshing to see a different take on the comic book horror story.

Jan Tschichold and the New Typography: Graphic Design Between the World Wars
by: Paul Stirton

Softcover. Bew Haven CT, Yale University Press, 1st, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, 272 pages. Richly illustrated with images from Jan Tschichold's little-known private collection of design ephemera, this important book explores a legendary figure in the history of modern graphic design through the artists, ideas, and texts from the Bauhaus that most influenced him. Tschichold (1902-1974), a prolific designer, writer, and theorist, stood at the forefront of a revolution in visual culture that made printed material more elemental and dynamic. His designs were applied to everyday graphics, from billboard advertisements and business cards to book jackets and invoices. This handsome volume offers a new understanding of Tschichold's work, and of the underlying theories of the artistic movement he helped to form, by analyzing his collections. Clean copy. by: Ware, Chris

Softcover. New York, Pantheon Graphic Library, reprint, 2003, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Non-paginated. Softcover with light edgewear to cover wrapper. Color comics throughout by Chris Ware. Clean, tight copy. This first book from Chicago author Chris Ware is a pleasantly-decorated view at a lonely and emotionally-impaired "everyman" (Jimmy Corrigan: The Smartest Kid on Earth), who is provided, at age 36, the opportunity to meet his father for the first time. An improvisatory romance which gingerly deports itself between 1890's Chicago and 1980's small town Michigan, the reader is helped along by thousands of colored illustrations and diagrams, which, when read rapidly in sequence, provide a convincing illusion of life and movement. The bulk of the work is supported by fold-out instructions, an index, paper cut-outs, and a brief apology, all of which concrete to form a rich portrait of a man stunted by a paralyzing fear of being disliked.

A century after his heyday, Lucinda Gosling presents an exploration of John Hassall's life, his art, and his legacy. Journalism
by: Sacco, Joe

Hardcover. New York , Metropolitan Books, 1st US, 2012, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Hardcover, 191 pages, illustrated throughout in color and b&w. Clean, unmarked copy in excellent condition. Over the past decade, Joe Sacco has increasingly turned to short-form comics journalism to report from conflict zones around the world. Collected here for the first time, Sacco's darkly funny, revealing reportage confirms his standing as one of the foremost war correspondents working today. Journalism takes readers from the smuggling tunnels of Gaza to war crimes trials in The Hague, from the lives of India's "untouchables" to the ordeal of Saharan refugees washed up on the shores of Malta. And in pieces never published before in the United States, Sacco confronts the misery and absurdity of the war in Iraq, including the darkest chapter in recent American history-the torture of detainees.

Kill My Mother: A Graphic Novelby: Feiffer, Jules

Kill My Mother: A Graphic Novel
by: Feiffer, Jules

Softcover. New York, Liveright, 1st, 2015, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, 160 pages. Softcover with light edgewear to wrappers. Duotone comics throughout. Adding to a legendary career that includes a Pulitzer Prize, an Academy Award, Obie Awards, and Lifetime Achievement Awards from the National Cartoonist Society and the Writers Guild of America, Jules Feiffer now presents his first noir graphic novel. Kill My Mother is a loving homage to the pulp-inspired films and comic strips of his youth. Channeling Eisner's The Spirit, along with the likes of Hammett, Chandler, Cain, John Huston, and Billy Wilder, and spiced with the deft humor for which Feiffer is renowned, Kill My Mother centers on five formidable women from two unrelated families, linked fatefully and fatally by a has-been, hard-drinking private detective. In a drawing style derived from Steve Canyon and The Spirit, Feiffer combines his long-honed skills as cartoonist, playwright, and screenwriter to draw us into this seductively menacing world where streets are black with soot and rain, and base motives and betrayal are served on the rocks in bars unsafe to enter. Bluesy, fast-moving, and funny, Kill My Mother is a trip to Hammett-Chandler-Cain Land: a noir-graphic novel like the movies they don't make anymore.

Klimowski Poster Book by: Klimowski, Andrzej

Klimowski Poster Book
by: Klimowski, Andrzej

Hardcover. London, SelfMadeHero, 1st, 2018, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Hardcover, pictorial boards, 128 pages. In the mid-1970s, Klimowski's fearlessly original artwork caught the eye of leading Polish theatre and film companies, for whom he designed some of the period's most influential and iconic posters. The London-born artist, who moved to Poland at a time when many East Europeans dreamed of going West, went on to create posters for works by filmmakers and playwrights from Scorsese to Altman, Beckett to Brecht. Drawing on folk art, Polish Surrealism and the work of his mentor at the Warsaw Academy, Henryk Tomaszewski, Klimowski uses techniques including photomontage and linocut to create posters that are filled with metaphor, drama and originality. The Klimowski Poster Book compiles the best of his Polish work, while also tracing his career after his return to London, where he remains Emeritus Professor of Illustration at the Royal College of Art. Clean, bright copy.

Kommix by: Burns, Charles

Kommix
by: Burns, Charles

Hardcover. Seattle, Fantagraphics Books, 1st, 2024, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Hardcover in pictorial boards with a red cloth spine, color plates. Master cartoonist Charles Burns has never hidden his passion for comic books and pop culture from the 1950 and 1960s. Inspired by the romance, horror, and sci-fi comics of his youth, as well as the 1960s American underground, the author of Black Hole has created a collection of 80 original comic book covers that, through his own inimitable aesthetic, present an alternate universe of stories that never were, but that you will wish existed. The covers - some with otherworldly titles in alien letterforms, and others that riff on classic genres (Throbbing Hearts, Unwholesome Love) and eras (Drug Buddy, Huss) - each inspire a multitude of interpretations, build entire worlds, and suggest entire narratives that lie within their non-existent guts. This is Burns at his most playful, imaginative, and suggestive, using the format of the comic book to continue to explore many of the themes that run through all his longer-form work. Clean copy

Krazy & Ignatz 1929-1930: "A Mice, A Brick, A Lovely Night"
by: Herriman, George/ Bill Blackbeard (Editor), Chris Ware (Cover Design)

Softcover. Seattle, WA, Fantagraphics, 1st, 2003, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, 120 pages. Light edgewear to wrappers. Color comics throughout. This volume finds Herriman flowering into the peak of his inventiveness, liberated at last from the constraints of his syndicate's chosen format. Gorgeous cartoons are augmented by rare bonus materials. This volume is one in a long-term plan to chronologically reprint the entirety of the 28-year run of Krazy Kat's breathtaking Sunday page, most of which has not seen print since originally running in newspapers 75 years ago. Each volume is painstakingly edited by the San Francisco Cartoon Art Museum's Bill Blackbeard, the world's foremost authority on early 20th Century American comic strips, and designed by Jimmy Corrigan author Chris Ware. In addition to the 104 full-page black-and-white Sunday strips from 1929 and 1930 (Herriman did not use color until 1935), the book includes an introduction by Blackbeard and reproductions of rare Herriman ephemera from Ware's own extensive collection, as well as annotations and other notes by Ware and Blackbeard.
