Passionella and Other Stories (Feiffer: The Collected Works) (Vol 4)by: Feiffer, Jules

Passionella and Other Stories (Feiffer: The Collected Works) (Vol 4)
by: Feiffer, Jules

Hardcover. Seattle, Fantagraphics, reprint, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Hardcover, 180 pages. After 14 years, Fantagraphics' Feiffer resumes with late-fifties and early-sixties popular-magazine stories emphasizing social satire. "Passionella" is Cinderella gone Hollywood: a chimney sweep is transformed into a sexpot. Other stories depict a despondent neurotic who solves romantic problems by inventing a compliant robot, a self-absorbed man who has the entire moon to himself, and the world's greatest athlete, scorned for shunning competition--all done in Feiffer's sketchy, economical cartoon style. An illustrated fable about a village jester searching for his serious side and several one-act plays fill out the volume. In these trenchant pieces, the era's anxieties--conformity, male insecurity, troubled relationships--don't seem a half century old.

Peanuts Every Sunday 1961-1965
by: Schulz, Charles M.

Hardcover. Seattle, WA, Fantagraphics, 1st, 2015, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, 288 pages. Large format hardcover with dust jacket. Color comics throughout. Clean, unmarked copy with only minor wear to dust jacket. Since their original publication, Peanuts Sundays have almost always been collected and reprinted in black and white. But many who read Peanuts in their original Sunday papers remain fond of the striking coloring, which makes for a surprisingly different reading experience. The early- to mid-1960s strips in our latest volume houses the first golden age of Peanuts Sundays in one gorgeous, full-color coffee table book. Linus, Charlie Brown, Pig-Pen, Shermy, Violet, Sally, Patty, and Schroeder are all present, but the rising star is undoubtedly Snoopy. Peanuts Every Sunday: 1961-1965 has been scrupulously re-colored to match the original syndicate coloring - allowing readers to plunge into Charles Schulz's marvelous world. Full-color illustrations throughout.

Pentagram: The Compendium by: Pentagram Partners

Pentagram: The Compendium
by: Pentagram Partners

Hardcover. Phaidon, 1st thus, 1993, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 304 pages. Working in graphic, architectural, and product design, Pentagram is one of the most respected firms in the world. A collection of the work and thought of the Pentagram partners, this lavishly illustrated and--not surprisingly--beautifully designed book helps to explain the unique qualities of organization and creativity that have allowed the firm to prosper since its beginnings more than 20 years ago. The candid and insightful discussion of the business and artistic processes of design is useful for students as well as seasoned professionals. While the tone is occasionally a bit self-satisfied, the final feeling conveyed is that of a ceaselessly open and growing entity, astonished at its success, justifiably proud of its work, and aware of its status as an anomaly. Recommended for all collections with a focus on design.

Pictures and Words: New Comic Art and Narrative Illustration
by: Roanne Bell and Mark Sinclair

Softcover. New Haven CT, Yale University Press, 1st, 2005, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, 144 pages. Comics, graphic novels, and single panel cartoons have long flourished as an alternative medium. In recent years these forms of narrative illustration-artwork that tells its own story rather than supporting a text-have increasingly crossed over into mainstream popular culture. Pictorial storytelling now reaches the public through animated films (Spirited Away) and films with animated sequences (Kill Bill), while graphic novels win literary prizes and comic art hangs in art galleries. This delightful book explores the various uses of images with and without text in the work of over thirty artists from around the world.

Postcards of the Night: Views of American Citiesby: Jakle, John A.

Postcards of the Night: Views of American Cities
by: Jakle, John A.

Hardcover. Museum of New Mexico Press, 1st, 2003, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 124 pages. Featuring eighty-two vintage postcards published beginning at the turn of the century, Postcards of the Night traces American cultural life as it was transformed by industrial strength and shifting demographics. The nation increasingly was growing more educated, upwardly mobile, and urban, and the nighttime postcard popularized this modernism for ordinary consumption. Coalitions of city planners and urban developers, politicians and the media utilized the picture postcard to strategize the role of the individual in the rise of the city. It was the birth of leisure and of travel, the new tourist city to which the postcard needed forcefully to speak, in ways that were equal part artifice and art.

Color illustrations throughout. Tight copy. Power to the People presents the Israel Museum's major collection of propaganda posters from the early years of the Soviet Union, documenting one of the most interesting chapters in twentieth-century graphic design. Inspired by the traditional vernacular of political cartoons, by the lubok wood-cut technique of Russian folk art, and by the ideas of Futurism, the poster artists employed a new visual language to explain the results of the Revolution to the Soviet people. The Israel Museum's collection of Soviet propaganda posters is the largest museum collection of its kind outside Russia. This book illustrates the entire collection for the first time.

Power to the People: The Graphic Design of the Radical Press and the Rise of the Counter-Culture, 1964-1974
by: Kaplan, Geoff

Hardcover. Chicago, University Of Chicago Press, 1st, 2013, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Hardcover, 264 pages. Like new in publisher's shrink-wrap. Though we think of the 1960s and the early '70s as a time of radical social, cultural, and political upheaval, we tend to picture the action as happening on campuses and in the streets. Yet the rise of the underground newspaper was equally daring and original. Thanks to advances in cheap offset printing, groups involved in antiwar, civil rights, and other social liberation issues began to spread their messages through provocatively designed newspapers and broadsheets. This vibrant new media was essential to the counterculture revolution as a whole--helping to motivate the masses and proliferate ideas. Power to the People presents more than 700 full-color images and excerpts from these astonishing publications, many of which have not been seen since they were first published almost fifty years ago. From the psychedelic pages of the Oracle, Haight-Ashbury's paper of choice, to the fiery editorials of the Black Panther Party Paper, these papers were remarkable for their editors' fervent belief in freedom of expression and their DIY philosophy. They were also extraordinary for their graphic innovations. Experimental typography and wildly inventive layouts reflect an alternative media culture as much informed by the space age, television, and socialism as it was by the great trinity of sex, drugs, and rock 'n' roll. Assembled by renowned graphic designer Geoff Kaplan, Power to the People pays homage in its layout to the radical press. Beyond its unparalleled images, Power to the People includes essays by Gwen Allen, Bob Ostertag, and Fred Turner, as well as a series of recollections edited by Pamela M. Lee, all of which comment on the critical impact of the alternative press in the social and popular movements of those turbulent years. Power to the People treats the design practices of that moment as activism in its own right that offers a vehement challenge to the dominance of official media and a critical form of self-representation.
