Hardcover. Seattle, Fantagraphics Books, 1st, 2024, Hardcover, very large format-15 X 19", 176 pages. Bill Ward's glamour girls were the staples of countless men's and humor magazines, where they shared the pages with cult models like Bettie Page, Tina Louise, and Julie Newmar, and cartoons by fellow "good girl" artists such as Archie's Dan Decarlo and Playboy's Jack Cole. Imagine if you will, an innocent but stunning young woman boasting wildly exaggeratedly Barbie-like proportions poured into a wisp of lingerie or clingy cocktail dress and adorned in diamond necklaces and opera-length gloves, all perched on top of a pair of dangerously high stiletto heels, and you've got the recipe for the quintessential Bill Ward glamour girl. What set Ward apart-and above-his talented contemporaries in terms of sheer image-making was his use of the conte crayon. When drawn on simple newsprint stock, this potent combination created Ward's trademark gossamer sheen on his women's thigh-high stockings. This Fantagraphics Studio edition showcases the best of Ward's Humorama work and includes a healthy number of what became known as his "telephone girls." Tame by today's standards, Ward's telephone girls were always caught in candid moments when they just happened to be talking on the phone dressed in gossamer lingerie in innocently provocative poses. And did they ever talk on the phone when they weren't in bed? The majority of the images in this volume were drawn between 1955 and 1965 when Ward was at the height of his skill. They have been scanned in super high-solution from original art and reproduced to highlight every sheen and accentuate every curve to its fullest. The book not only reproduces more than 150 of Ward's most beautifully rendered illustrations, but also serves as a time capsule to a more innocent moment in pop culture when these images were shocking. The Fantagraphics Studio Edition also features an introduction by fashion/style icon and burlesque superstar Dita Von Teese. Like new. DOMESTIC SHIPPING ONLY.

Hardcover. NY, Abrams Comicarts, 1st, 2023, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket, 168 pages. B&w art by Wagner Willan. Author Julian Voloj and award-winning illustrator Wagner Willian's Black & White is the first graphic novel biography following the life of Bobby Fischer, from chess wunderkind and national hero to his eventual spiral into madness and infamy. It begins in Brooklyn, where Fischer was born and raised by a single mother. By the time he was a teen, he had established himself as a loner and dropped out of school. But none of that mattered; he had found his true calling--chess. In 1972, Fischer played what many consider "the game of the century" against the Soviet Union's chess champion Boris Spassky at the height of the Cold War. Later, Fischer became the youngest-ever US Chess Champion and the game's youngest grandmaster. Never before had chess received such international attention. Fischer, whose sole focus in life up until then was chess, reached the Olympus of chess at 29, and then . . . he disappeared. Suffering from mental illness, the chess genius became increasingly paranoid, lost in anti-Semitic conspiracy theories--despite the fact that he himself was Jewish--and died as a fugitive in Iceland. Softcover. NY, ibooks, 1st US, 2003, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, 56 pages. The story of a private detective seeking revenge for the death of his assassinated ex-girlfriend. A stunning thriller, enhanced by a wonderfully detailed drawing style, with characters in the form of the animals that best reflect the nuances of their personalities. Rendered in a film noir style, the stories are set in late 1950s United States. The strip attempts to reflect a dirty, realist outlook and a dark cinematic style through fairly clean, realistic lines. Detailed watercolor drawings, including real-life places and cities, also contribute to the realistic feel of the series, despite the fact that characters are animals. Dog-ear crease to rear corner of cover, clean copy.

Softcover. Seattle, Fantagraphics, reprint, 2013, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, A comic-book classic with timely resonance: Blazing Combat was an American war-comics magazine published by Warren Publishing from 1965 to 1966. Written and edited by Archie Goodwin , with artwork by such industry notables as Gene Colan , Frank Frazetta , John Severin , Alex Toth , Al Williamson, Russ Heath, Reed Crandall, and Wally Wood , it featured war stories in both contemporary and period settings, unified by a humanistic theme of the personal costs of war, rather than by traditional men's adventure motifs. What proved to be the most controversial were stories set during the then-contemporary Vietnam War; one such story caused key distributors to stop selling the title. Fantagraphics softcover edition of the sold-out 2011 hardcover, magnificently printed and bound, of these stories, superbly reproduced from the original printer's film negatives.
Hardcover. Seattle, Fantagraphics Books, 1st, 2014, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover. Over 400 pages of original art collected over 50 years. In the mid-sixties, Glenn Bray was a kid with a lot of money -- his family owned a very successful hardware store chain -- and an appreciation for obscure art that was prescient to the point of being visionary; he was a fanboy-turned-tastemaker who elevated his private collecting into something that would influence the evolution of the comic medium. He became a loyal and passionate patron of artists who went largely ignored, like some mellow, SoCal Medici. It seems crazy today, but original comic art pages were still considered 'by-products' of printing and publication when Bray began purchasing the black-&-white illustration-boards from EC greats like Wolverton, Kurtzman, Davis, Feldstein, Wood and Elder. More importantly, his original art purchases and private commissions were key in fostering the careers of unknown artists in his own age bracket, particularly now legendary Underground greats like R. Crumb, S. Clay Wilson, Robert Williams, Rick Griffin, and Gilbert Shelton. With a collection of original comic art and illustration spanning 6 decades, Bray has become vital to the work of establishing the official histories of comic art.

Hardcover. New York , W.W. Norton & Co., 1st, 2009, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 224 pages, b&w art throughout by Crumb. Envisioning the first book of the bible like no one before him, R. Crumb, the legendary illustrator, reveals here the story of Genesis in a profoundly honest and deeply moving way. Originally thinking that we would do a take off of Adam and Eve, Crumb became so fascinated by the Bible's language, "a text so great and so strange that it lends itself readily to graphic depictions," that he decided instead to do a literal interpretation using the text word for word in a version primarily assembled from the translations of Robert Alter and the King James bible. As Crumb writes in his introduction, "the stories of these people, the Hebrews, were something more than just stories. They were the foundation, the source, in writing of religious and political power, handed down by God himself." Crumb's Book of Genesis, the culmination of 5 years of painstaking work, is a tapestry of masterly detail and storytelling which celebrates the astonishing diversity of the one of our greatest artistic geniuses.

The Book of Weirdo is the definitive - and hugely entertaining- examination of Weirdo magazine, renowned underground comix cartoonist Robert Crumb's legendary humor comics anthology, which was originally published throughout the 1980s. A "low-brow" counterpoint to Art Spiegelman and Francoise Mouley's rather high-faluttin' RAW comix publication, Weirdo influenced an entire generation of alternative and neo-underground artists, as well as creative refuge for the underground comix veterans, and this book features the complete story of the well-recalled comics magazine, along with testimonials from over 130 of the publication's contributors, including interviews with Weirdo's three editors - R. "Keep on Truckin'" Crumb, Peter "Hate" Bagge, and Aline "The Bunch" Kominsky-Crumb - and publisher "Baba Ron" Turner. 288 pages.
Softcover. Camarillo CA, About Comics, 1st, 2021, Softcover, 154 pages, b&w cartoons. "Negro America's Favorite Cartoonist" That's what Langston Hughes called Ollie Harrington, whose cartoons and comic strips were a staple of America's Black newspapers for decades starting in the 1930s. In his single-panel series "Dark Laughter," Harrington brought out the vibrancy of Harlem life in its day, while serving some cutting looks at the politics of the time. At the heart of "Dark Laughter" is Bootsie, a cunning, conning, girl-chasing ne'er-do-well who is nonetheless beloved in his Harlem community... if often reluctantly. Bootsie is both the victim of the world's troubles and a frequent cause of them for others. Here's a collection of prime cartoons from the mid-1950s, drawn with the detailed joy that only Ol Harrington (who also worked as Oliver W. Harrington) could bring, finally available to a larger audience.
