Pogo a la Sundae
by: Walt Kelly

Softcover. NY, Simon and Schuster, 1st, 1961, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, 127 pages in b&w. Purple pictorial wrappers. Walt Kelly's career in animation began in 1936 at Walt Disney Studios, where he contributed to Pinocchio and Fantasia. In 1941, Kelly resigned at the age of 28 to work at Dell Comics, where he created Pogo. He started drawing the comic strip in 1943 but it was not widely published until 1948. He based his characters on animals native to the Okefenokee Swamp. Pogo, a possum, was the central character and some of his friends were cigar chomping Albert the Alligator, Churchy LeFemme (a turtle), Dr. Howland Owl complete with glasses, and others. His biting political satire was aimed a Senator Joseph McCarthy (Kelly s nickname for him was Simple J Malarkey ), the FBI, the John Birch Society, Nikita Khrushchev, and later, Presidents Lyndon Johnson and Richard Nixon. by: Deis, Robert, Doyle, Wyatt

Hardcover. New Texture, 1st, 2018, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Hardcover, pictorial boards, 135 pages. A lush visual archive collecting some of artist Samson Pollen's most memorable pieces, selected from the hundreds of jaw-dropping illustrations Pollen provided for men's adventure magazines (MAMs) from the 1950s through the 1970s. Sexy women were a regular component of story illustrations published in the more than 160 MAM titles that flourished from the early 1950s through the mid-1970s, and nobody painted beautiful and dangerous femmes like Pollen. Much of the artist's work--literally, hundreds of pieces--saw print in the Atlas/Diamond group of MAMs from Marvel Comics founder Martin Goodman's Magazine Management Company. Until now, almost none of these illustrations have seen print since their original publication in those latter-day pulps. POLLEN'S WOMEN collects the artist's sexiest and most lethal female portraits in a deluxe hardcover edition, with an autobiographical introduction by the artist.

Pretending is Lying
by: Dominique Goblet and Sophie Yanow (transl.)

Hardcover. NY, New York Review Comics, 1st US, 2017, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Harcover, pictorial boards, 149 pages. The first book to appear in English by the acclaimed Belgian artist Dominique Goblet, Pretending is Lying is a memoir unlike any other. In a series of dazzling fragments--skipping through time, and from raw, slashing color to delicate black and white--Goblet examines the most important relationships in her life: with her partner, Guy Marc; with her daughter, Nikita; and with her parents. The result is an unnerving comedy of paternal dysfunction, an achingly ambivalent love story (with asides on Thomas Pynchon and the Beach Boys), and a searing account of childhood trauma--a dizzying, unforgettable view of a life in progress and a tour de force of the art of comics. This NYRC edition is a hardcover with extra-thick paper, full color throughout, and features new English hand-lettering by the artist.
