Amazing World of Carmine Infantino
by: J. David Spurlock, Carmine Infantino

Hardcover. Lebanon NJ, Vanguard, 2nd Pr., 2001, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket, 192 pages, illustrated in b&w and color. In his 60-year career, Carmine Infantino practised nearly every job in the field of comics, for a "Who's Who" list of publishers. But Infantino will always be remembered as the personification of DC Comics' Silver Age. Infantino helped to resurrect a dying comics industry in 1956 as the artist who launched the Silver Age with his co-creation, the Flash, and remains the best remembered Flash artist of all-time. Infantino proved one of the all-time, great sci-fi artists with his elegant, cityscaped Adam Strange. The only sci-fi comic to rival the sales of Adam Strange was Star Wars, to which Infantino also contributed. In 1964, Infantino became indispensable to the Batman legacy. He, with editor Julius Schwartz, saved the Caped Crusader's comics from impending cancellation with the "New Look Batman." Infantino also redesigned the Batmobile and with Schwartz, created Batgirl. This is Infantino's own history of comics with co-author J. David Spurlock, through Infantino's experiences, from the industry's primordial, Golden Age, through his artistic achievements, corporate years at DC Comics, and post-corporate years including his animation work, teaching, return as a top artist to DC, and Batman newspaper strip. Foreword by Joe Kubert. Afterword by Jim Steranko. Clean copy.

American Comic Book Chronicles: The 1940s: 1945-1949
by: Editor: Dallas, Keith, Editor: Wells, John, Editor: Arndt, Richard

Hardcover. Raleigh NC, TwoMorrows Publishing, 1st, 2024, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Hardcover in glossy pictorial boards, 263 pages illustrated in color. This 1945-49 volume covers the comic book industry during the aftermath of World War II, when scores of writers and artists returned from foreign battlefields to resume their careers. It was a period when readers began turning away from the escapist entertainment offered by super-heroes in favor of other genres, like the grittier, more brutal crime comics. It was a time when Joe Simon and Jack Kirby created Young Romance, inaugurating a golden age of romance comics. And it was during this five-year period that Timely and National Comics capitalized on the popularity of Westerns, that Bill Gaines plotted a new course for EC Comics in the wake of his father's death, and that Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster first sued for the rights to Superman. These are just a few of the events chronicled in this exhaustive, full-color hardcover, further documenting the ACBC series' cohesive, linear overview of the entire landscape of comics history! Cleveland native Harvey Pekar is a true American original. A V.A. hospital file clerk and comic book writer, Harvey chronicles the ordinary and mundane in stories both funny and touching. His dead-on eye for the frustrations and minutiae of the workaday world mix in a delicate balance with his insight into personal relationships. Pekar has been compared to Dreiser, Dostoevsky, and Lenny Bruce. But he is truly more than all of them--he is himself. "Mr. Pekar has . . . proven that comics can address the ambiguities of daily living, that like the finest fiction, they can hold a mirror up to life."

An Anthology of Graphic Fiction, Cartoons, and True Stories: Volume 2
by: Brunetti, Ivan

Hardcover. New Haven CT, Yale University Press, 1st, 2008, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 400 pages, illustrated throughout in color and b&w. Clean, unmarked copy with only minor wear to dust jacket. The book presents contemporary art comics produced by 75 artists, along with some classic comic strips and other related fine art and historical materials. Brunetti arranges the book to reflect the creative process itself, connecting stories and art to each other in surprising ways: nonlinear, elliptical, sometimes whimsical, even poetic. He emphasizes continuity from piece to piece, weaving themes and motifs throughout the volume. As gorgeously produced as Brunetti's previous anthology of graphic fiction, this book does full justice to the creative work of Art Spiegelman, Chris Ware, Charles Burns, Gary Panter, and the other prominent or emerging comic artists who are currently at work at the cutting edge of their medium.

An Orgy of Playboy's Eldon Dedini
by: Dedini, Eldon

Hardcover. Seattle, Fantagraphics, 1st, 2006, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright, unclipped dust jacket. Eldon Dedini has been one of Playboy's most recognizable full-page gag cartoonists. With a masterful watercolor technique that burlesques a broad range of subjects, from East and West Coast urban and suburban adult-hipster to classical Japanese erotic prints, Dedini's most personal cartoons rely on mythology and legend. They evoke a bucolic sexually-liberated paradise that leaves his readers lingering over the imagery long after the gag registers. The Art of Playboy's Eldon Dedini is the first retrospective collection of his work, and gathers in one volume the most sophisticated, elegant, and funny gag panels of the past six decades.

Angelica's Grotto: A Novel
by: Russell Hoban

Hardcover. NY, Carroll & Graf, 1st, 2001, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket. Altogether original, at once searing and amusing, this darkly comic novel confronts Harold Klein, now in his infirm seventies, with a strange malady -- the loss of his "inner voice" -- and introduces him to the steamy world of Internet sex. Inexplicably bereft of the mental faculty that would under normal circumstances keep him from blurting out, uncensored, the first thought that pops into his head, art connoisseur Klein wanders one evening into a pornographic Web site, Angelica's Grotto. An ongoing on-line dialogue, totally without verbal inhibition on Klein's part, eventually brings him face-to-face with the brains behind the grotto, an academic sex researcher named Melissa Bottomley. Harold Klein's erotic odyssey takes him not only through unimagined erogenous zones but also into arcane corners of the art world, as he seeks to meet Melissa's need for funding and she his for sexual gratification. As Klein strives to reconcile new desires with old habits, author Russell Hoban compellingly explores the dark relations between art and pornography, acts virtual and real, culture and politics, revelation and privacy.
