Vu: The Story of a Magazine
by: C?©dric de Veigy and Michel Frizot

Hardcover. NY, Thames & Hudson, 1st, 2009, Hardcover, 320 pages. The best pages from the sensational photo magazine published in France in the 1920s and 1930s. Established in Paris in 1928, VU combined stunning photography with dynamic layouts and first-rate reporting, creating a revolution in journalism and setting the stage for future photo magazines like Life, Stern, and Paris Match. VU covered a wide and eclectic range of subjects including politics, world affairs, social issues, discoveries, exploration, the arts, sports, and entertainment. It intended to be an illustrated journal of the week's events-a movie newsreel on paper-and published work by some of the most important photographers of the time: Robert Capa, Andre Kertesz, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Brassai, Man Ray, and more. This book gathers some of the best work from more than 600 issues of VU: covers, double-page spreads, and complete reports. It provides both a record of the prewar world of the twenties and thirties, and an unparalleled history of photojournalism in the early twentieth century. 200+ b&w illustrations

Walt Disney's Mickey Mouse: Color Sundays Vol. 1 "Call Of The Wild"
by: Floyd Gottfredson , David Gerstein, et al.

Hardcover. Seattle, Fantagraphics, 1st, 2013, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Hardcover, 280 pages. The burgeoning popularity of Mickey Mouse on the screen and in the daily newspaper comics made the 1932 addition of a full-color Sunday strip inevitable. The first surprise in this collection of the initial four years of Sunday installments is that in this early color incarnation, Mickey's face was pink rather than white! But, more significantly, each Sunday strip comprised about a dozen panels, not the measly four panels of the dailies, permitting a different pace: gags could be extended longer, and story lines unwound at their leisure. Unlike the dailies, which featured stories that went on for weeks, the Sundays mixed serialized adventures--in this volume, Mickey visits the Wild West, fights a giant in a fairy tale he tells his nephews, and scales a mountain to win a $1,000 prize--with single-episode gag strips, all drawn in a charmingly old-fashioned style. The high-spirited, adventure-seeking mouse in these vintage strips--a far cry from today's bland, domesticated version--makes it clear why Mickey captivated Depression-era America.

Where We Lived: Discovering the Places We Once Called Home
by: Jack Larkin

Hardcover. Newtown CT, The Taunton Press, 1st, 2006, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket, 266 pages. The past has left behind only scattered clues that, on their own, provide little insight into how the people of early America lived and the details of their daily lives. The photographs in this book, the deeply informed narrative that accompanies them, and the eyewitness accounts of daily life that the author weaves throughout, provide a fresh perspective on our early American ancestors and the places they called home. This book is about how their houses and their life in them, from the wealthy to the impoverished, from New York City to the small farms and plantations of the South, from coastal fishing towns to the Western frontier of Indiana and Kentucky. The stories focus on the remarkably vivid differences from one part of the country to the next, class and culture, and the realities of everyday life for American families. These stories twine around a wide selection of HABS photographs of early houses, covering the variety and evolutions of house styles -- not by labeling the style but by explaining the style in the context of everyday life. Richly illustrated with handsome black-and-white photography of old houses from the Library of Congress Historic American Building Survey (HABS) collection and supplemented with period woodcuts, engravings, drawings, paintings, artifacts, and maps, the book is printed on a 4-color press for a depth of tone. Sidebar excerpts from diaries, journals, and letters inject graphic eyewitness descriptions, adding an additional layer of insight. The book also includes sidebars called Still Standing that traces the history of specific houses, from their origins to the present and includes information on the original family, how the house has evolved over the centuries, and how it's used today.
