Alfred Stieglitz - Photographs & Writings
by: Greenough, Sarah/Juan Hamilton

Hardcover. New York, National Gallery of Art/Callaway Editions, 1st, 1983, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 247 pages. Illustrated with black & white photographs. Dust jacket with 2 tape repaired tears at bottom edge of front cover. Clean, tight copy. Alfred Stieglitz was a seminal figure in 20th century art. One of the foremost photographers in the century, he also helped other photographers define what the aesthetic means in photography. He also was a champion for many of the best known photographers, and seriously boosted their careers. In painting, he was an early advocate of important 20th century artists like Arthur Dove and Georgia O'Keeffe. In addition, he published two influential journals about photography, and exhibited art in his famous gallery in New York. Clearly, though, photography was his first love. "I have all but killed myself for Photography." This book focuses on his central vision of photography ("search for objective truth and pure form") which increasingly was about "antiphotographs" or images that move beyond simple representation. This concept is examined both in 73 of his best images and through numerous excerpts from his voluminous writings on the subject (over 200 essays).

Andres Serrano: Holy Works
by: Serrano, Andres

Hardcover. Bologna, Italy, Damiani, 1st, 2011, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, White cloth covers with gilt lettering and color picture on front. Like new in publisher's shrink-wrap. Holy Works is the culmination of Andres Serrano's vision of Christian iconography, reinterpreted photographically for the present. Serrano's intention with these works is not to recreate specific medieval or renaissance religious paintings, nor to invest them with the iconoclasm that made his name in the 1980s, but rather to renew the genre of sacred portraiture: "Rather than destroy sacred icons," says the artist, "I reinvent and reinforce them." Serrano's subjects for this series are selected from among his friends and acquaintances, emphasizing (like Caravaggio before him) the ordinariness of human features. The genres and themes are familiar, and Holy Works includes a "Last Supper" and a "Stations of the Cross" (rendered as a triptych panel), as well as bolder portrayals typical of Serrano--a "Blood Madonna" and a "Chinoise Madonna," for example. This volume is Serrano's major statement of his religious and artistic belief.

Anthony Hernandez: Pictures for Rome
by: Rugoff, Ralph

Hardcover. US, Smart Art Press, 1st, 2001, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, 90 pages. Like new in publisher's shrink-wrap. ''Anthony Hernandez's "Pictures for Rome" (1998-99), made while he was a fellow at the American Academy, make no reference to any iconic images of that historic city and its famous edifices. Instead, these elegantly disturbing color photographs examine what could be considered a series of unofficial urban monuments composed from the distressed architectural elements and detritus found inside abandoned buildings..."Pictures for Rome" are pictures of haunted places. Whether they chronicle the bones and viscera of an aborted commercial structure or never-finished hospital, a vacant housing complex or long-deserted schoolhouse, these images engage the ghostly relic of urban renewal, the failed construction projects and real estate disasters that conjure modernism's less glamorous side. And they remind us that even in Rome, the mother city, everything is disposable... "Pictures for Rome" are not, in other words, the same thing as pictures "of" Rome. These images do not describe a specific city at all; instead, they chart concealed landscapes that exist in a world apart from the vitality and velocity of today's consumerist metropolis...A deep undersea silence seems to engulf the modern ruins that Hernandez photographs... Blurring the line dividing past and present, they leave our temporal compass spinning wildly.''--Ralph Rugoff
