Schwinn: The Best Present Ever: A Celebration of America's Favorite Bicycle
by: Don Rauf

Hardcover. Lyons Press, 1st, 2017, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Hardcover, pictorial boards, 142 pages illustrated in color. For many children of the sixties, the gift of a Schwinn was a ticket to freedom, a chance to feel the wind on their face and the steady rotation of rubber at their feet. The Schwinn took many through their childhood adventures, with memories filled of after school, free-range bike rides around the neighborhood with friends, the late afternoon sun shining off of the gleaming painted frame and stainless steel fenders. The 1960s and 70s saw a boom of Schwinn Sting-Rays, which appealed to young riders who had to have the hottest 'muscle' bike in town, and sold like hotcakes to parents everywhere scrambling to get the best Christmas present ever for their kids. From its early years dominating the youth market with Sting-Rays to the teen-friendly Varsity and Continental models to its most recent parent-friendly iterations of the Easy-Steer and Roadster Trikes, the Schwinn weaves itself through 120 years of American history. Clean, bright copy.

Shards of America
by: Bergerson, Phil and David Harris

Hardcover. New York, Quantuck Lane Press, 1st, 2004, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 136 pages, color plates. Like new in publisher's shrink-wrap. Canadian photographer Phil Bergerson has gathered richly detailed images from neglected corners of American's towns and small cities, and created a fascinating mosaic. Businesses, religious sects, and community groups announce their presence, offer their services, and pitch their messages, while commercial signs, graffiti, posters, and public notices blanket the surfaces of buildings and public spaces. Paintings and movie posters, dime-store novels and daily newspapers, figurines and mannequins, decals and stenciled graffiti, and children's letters and drawings are laid out as artifacts of a greater whole. Patriotism, consumerism, censorship, nostalgia for a simpler past coupled with a desire for a less complicated present...touching on all these themes, Bergerson's quietly ironic but empathetic tone encourages the reader to imagine how our own ordinary world might appear to viewers in a hundred or more years' time. 119 color photographs.

Sir Arthur Pinero: A Critical Biography with Letters
by: Dunkel, Wilbur Dwight

Hardcover. Chicago, University of Chicago Press, 1st, 1941, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcovrt in a lightly worn dust jacket, 141 pages. Frontis photo of Pinero. Sir Arthur Wing Pinero (24 May 1855 - 23 November 1934) was an English actor and later an important dramatist and stage director. He became a prolific and successful playwright, authoring fifty-nine plays. These include serious social dramas, some dealing with social hypocrisy surrounding attitudes to women in second marriages. 'Pinero's talent was stagecraft. He knew how to organize material for effective presentation on the stage. He understood the mass psychology, the emotional reaction of the group in the theater, and thought little of the individual reader. As a result, the dialogue in his plays is right for the actor and the audience, but disconcerting to the readers. But in particular, Pinero was the master of suspense, motivating the turns in his plot sequence with unerring skill. For he understood stage business, the timinng of motion and sound, and, above all, the reactions of an audience to the physical properties on the stage itself. ' Clean copy.

Slaughterhouse: Chicago's Union Stock Yard and the World It Made
by: Pacyga, Dominic A.

Hardcover. Chicago, University of Chicago Press, 2nd pr., 2015, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket, 233 pages, b&w illustrations. From the minute it opened--on Christmas Day in 1865--it was Chicago's must-see tourist attraction, drawing more than half a million visitors each year. Families, visiting dignitaries, even school groups all made trips to the South Side to tour the Union Stock Yard. There they got a firsthand look at the city's industrial prowess as they witnessed cattle, hogs, and sheep disassembled with breathtaking efficiency. At their height, the kill floors employed 50,000 workers and processed six hundred animals an hour, an astonishing spectacle of industrialized death. Slaughterhouse tells the story of the Union Stock Yard, chronicling the rise and fall of an industrial district that, for better or worse, served as the public face of Chicago for decades. Dominic A. Pacyga is a guide like no other--he grew up in the shadow of the stockyards, spent summers in their hog house and cattle yards, and maintains a long-standing connection with the working-class neighborhoods around them. Pacyga takes readers through the packinghouses as only an insider can, covering the rough and toxic life inside the plants and their lasting effects on the world outside. He shows how the yards shaped the surrounding neighborhoods and controlled the livelihoods of thousands of families. He looks at the Union Stock Yard's political and economic power and its sometimes volatile role in the city's race and labor relations. And he traces its decades of mechanized innovations, which introduced millions of consumers across the country to an industrialized food system. Clean copy.

Some Kinda Vocation [With DVD]
by: Dunn, Cheryl (Photographer)

Hardcover. Picture Box Inc, 1st, 2007, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Like new in publisher's shrink-wrap. Photographer and filmmaker Cheryl Dunn has been one of America's foremost chroniclers of the underground scene since the mid-1990s. This first retrospective looks at the worlds of street art, graffiti and life on the creative margins from an appreciative insider's point of view. It features documentary photographs of San Francisco artists like Barry McGee, Margaret Killgallen and Chris Johanson, with whom she shared a distinct and elusive sensibility, as well as others from Los Angeles and her home town of New York, including, like Phil Frost, Mike Mills and Ed Templeton. Also included is a rare, 60-minute film documenting the scene imported to Tokyo and focused on 13 artists in particular--including McGee, Johanson, Mills, Killgallen, Templeton, Frost, Thomas Campbell, Stephen Powers, Tommy Guerrero, Josh Lozcano, Brendon Fowler and Aaron Rose. Through candid interviews, riveting footage of art in action, and a massive demolition derby in the streets of Tokyo, the film captures these artists just before they broke through to the mainstream. It is about building things up, knocking them down and the simple enjoyment of making work with friends before the business of art takes hold. Features extra rare footage of all of the artists as well as short films about Johanson and Gonzales.

Someone Else's House: America's Unfinished Struggle for Integration
by: Jacoby, Tamar

Hardcover. NY, Free Press, 1st, 1998, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket. Sixty years after the 1963 March on Washington, blacks and whites are still trying to achieve Martin Luther King, Jr.'s historic dream of racial inclusion. What ever happened to integration? What happened to the vision of a single, shared community in which both blacks and whites would feel they belong? Barriers have fallen; prejudice is abating. Blacks have made astonishing progress in many areas. Yet if anything, King's vision seems more remote than ever, and most Americans, black and white, remain divided by anger and mistrust. In Someone Else's House, Tamar Jacoby asks what happened to the King dream, calling the nation back to its most hopeful and promising ideal of race relations. Moving beyond the stale blame game of left and right, Jacoby uses history to show what's worked and what hasn't. Her story of the unfinished struggle for integration leads through the volatile worlds of New York in the 1960s, the center of liberal idealism about race; Detroit in the 1970s, under the city's first black mayor, Coleman Young; and Atlanta in the 1980s and 1990s, ruled by a coalition of white businessmen and black politicians. Stan Lee: A Life in Comics
by: Liel Leibovitz

Hardcover. New Haven CT, Yale University Press, 1st, 2020, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket, 179 pages. From the prizewinning Jewish Lives series, a meditation on the deeply Jewish and surprisingly spiritual roots of Stan Lee and Marvel Comics Few artists have had as much of an impact on American popular culture as Stan Lee. The characters he created--Spider-Man and Iron Man, the X-Men and the Fantastic Four--occupy Hollywood's imagination and production schedules, generate billions at the box office, and come as close as anything we have to a shared American mythology. This illuminating biography focuses as much on Lee's ideas as it does on his unlikely rise to stardom. It surveys his cultural and religious upbringing and draws surprising connections between celebrated comic book heroes and the ancient tales of the Bible, the Talmud, and Jewish mysticism.
