INSCRIBED on half-title page by Bellico and by Barbara Bartley on the title page. During the latter 19th century, inland waterways were a primary means of commercial and public transportation in the northeast. Captain Theodore D Bartley owned 3 Lake Champlain (NY-VT) canal boats and kept a daily descriptive journal of his life over 30 years. His routes included the Canadian Waterways north of the St Lawrence River along the Rideau Canal; the Northern Waterway from Quebec Province to New York Harbor; the Western Route via the Erie Canal from Troy NY to Lake Erie. He and his canal boat family witnessed many landmark historical events, as well as ordinary life alongside the canals. His original diaries of 1500 pages were transcribed by Bartley, Barbara B., great-grand-daughter-in-law of Theodore.

Bennett explains the feudal system which linked the poor man to the soil and to the service of his lord and the church. Since all of the inhabitants of England at that time were countrymen, except for a few large towns, this book is really an introduction to life in Medieval England as a whole. Clean and unmarked wraps in reddish-brown with a woodcut illustration. Name on front fly leaf, otherwise clean.

A pictorial chronicle of the flood considered "the worst natural disaster to ever strike Vermont in modern times" covering the state with 8.71 inches of rain. According to the National Weather Service, "1285 bridges were lost as well as countless numbers of homes and buildings destroyed and hundreds of miles of roads and railroad tracks washed out." The book shows the results of the rainfall: rising water, destroyed railroad tracks, and leveled houses. Name on front fly leaf otherwise a clean copy in exceptional condition.

The book suggests strongly that Oakeshott's philosophy of political activity cannot be reduced to a branch of conservatism, liberalism, or postmodernism or a theory or set of doctrines which fit neatly into any conventional school, like that of Idealism or Skepticism. Rather, Oakeshott's philosophy of political activity is a provocation to all of the currently dominant schools of political theory and political practice. The zeal to modernize business, government and social relations extended to farm families and the ways women defined their roles. In this study of the expert advice offered by the domestic economy movement, Holt argues that women were not passive receptors of these views. Seeing their place in agriculture as multi-faceted and important, they eagerly accepted improved education and many modern appliances but often rejected suggestions conflicting with their own views of the rewards and values of farm life. Progressive reform inevitably left a mixed legacy; science and technology did not perfect rural society. But many programs such as 4-H and Master Homemaker still exist and are still shaped by women's desire to preserve and pass on the possibilities of rural life. Clean copy.
