by: Davidson, Bruce

Hardcover. Gottingen, Steidl, 1st, 2015, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover with dust jacket. Like new in publisher's shrink-wrap. This volume presents Bruce Davidson's personal selections from his lesser-known color archive, from a period of nearly 60 years. Assignments from various magazines including Vogue, National Geographic and Life, as well as commercial projects led Davidson to photograph subjects as diverse as fashion (in the early 1960s), the Shah of Iran with his family (1964), keepers of French monuments (1988), the supermodel Kylie Bax (1997) and college cheerleaders (1989). He photographed in India and China, but also at home in New York, in Chicago and along the Pacific Coast Highway. In 1968, Michelangelo Antonioni invited Davidson to document the making of his film Zabriskie Point. Davidson also continued to pursue personal projects, such as photographing the Yiddish writer and Nobel Prize laureate Isaac Bashevis Singer (1972-75), the New York City subway (1980) and Katz's Delicatessen (2004). Often staying on in a country after an official assignment, Davidson documented Welsh coalfields, family holidays in Martha's Vineyard and travelled through Patagonia and Mexico.

Cave Paintings Of Baja California: Discovering the Great Murals of an Unknown People
by: Harry W. Crosby

Hardcover. San Diego, Sunbelt Publications, Revised Ed., 1998, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 246 pages, color photographs and illustrations throughout, illustrated end paper. The Great Murals of Mexico's Baja California are one of the five greatest sites in the world for primitive rock art. They rank with those of southern France, northern Spain, northwest Africa, and outback Australia. These Great Murals, created by an unknown people, are without doubt the most distinctive trove of rock art in the Western Hemisphere. The site was unveiled to the modern world in the 1960s by adventure/mystery writer Erle Stanley Gardner who brought in UCLA archaeologist Clement Meighan to validate the importance of his find. But it was not until the 1970s, when author/photographer Harry W. Crosby undertook a systematic search for the largely unknown works hidden in the mountains of central Baja that the scope and significance of the find became known. He documented his search and discovery of over 200 previously unreported rock art sites leading to the original publication of The Cave Paintings of Baja California by Copley Books in 1975 which first introduced this cave art to the general public. Since that time, Baja California's Great Murals have been designated a United Nations Heritage Site. This lavishly illustrated full-color account is greatly revised and expanded from the original edition and offers Crosby's unique perspective on the painted sites and painting styles found in different parts of the Great Mural area. Light edge wear to dust jacket. Else a very clean, tight copy.

Chagall and Music
by: Ambre Gauthier and Meret Meyer

Hardcover. NY, Gallimard, 1st, 2017, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Hardcover, 392 pages. Profusley illustrated, this book explores a hitherto overlooked topic in Chagall studies - the connection between Chagall and music. This intimate relationship, which ran deep in both his family history and the Jewish culture of his native city, was particularly meaningful in Chagall's creations for the stage. His works for the Jewish Theatre (Moscow, 1919-1920) and the ballets 'Aleko' (Mexico, 1942), 'The Firebird' (New York, 1945), 'Daphnis et Chloe' (1958) and 'The Magic Flute' (New York, 1967) celebrate the links he established between music, large-scale set design, and the material design of costumes. Chagall's monumental projects in the 1960s, such as the ceiling of the Paris Opera (1964) and his decorative architectural program for the Metropolitan Opera at Lincoln Center in New York (1966), are a reflection of his notion of 'total art', and his explorations in the universality of music and its translation into the spatial dimension. Music was a constant source of inspiration to Chagall. Clean, bright copy. No dust jacket.

Chihuahua: Pictures from the Edge
by: Virgil Hancock, Charles Bowden

Softcover. Albuquerque, University of New Mexico Press, 1st, 1996, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, 67 pages. A collection of 40 color photographs depicting the building facades and ruins of modern day Chihuahua, Mexico. The culminating effect of the brilliantly colored photos is nearly hallucinatory, taking in both the paintings of Bugs Bunny affixed to store facades, and political graffiti with a postmodern inclusiveness which says volumes about the spirit and poverty of this community. An accompanying text essayed by Charles Bowden, author of Blood Orchid , complements the images with a kind of poetic, meandering, and intimate meditation on the physical and existential state of Chihuahua. Lacks an index and bibliography. Clean copy.

Comparative Peace Processes in Latin America
by: Arnson Cynthia J. (Ed.)

Softcover. Stanford CA, Stanford University Press, 3rd pr., 1999, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, 493 pages. This book is about ending guerrilla conflicts in Latin America through political means. It is about peace processes, aimed at securing an end to military hostilities in the context of agreements that touch on some of the principal political, economic, social, and ethnic imbalances that led to conflict in the first place. The book presents a carefully structured comparative analysis of six Latin American countries--Nicaragua, El Salvador, Guatemala, Mexico, Colombia, and Peru--which experienced guerrilla warfare that outlasted the end of the Cold War. The book explores in detail the unique constellation of national and international events that allowed some wars to end in negotiated settlement, one to end in virtual defeat of the insurgents, and the others to rage on. The aim of the book is to identify the variables that contribute to the success or failure of a peace dialogue. Clean copy.

Cost of Courage in Aztec Society: Essays on Mesoamerican Society and Culture
by: Inga Clendinnen

Softcover. NY, Cambridge University Press, 1st, 2010, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, 216 pages. A collection of pathbreaking essays on Aztec and Maya culture in the sixteenth century. In the title work Inga Clendinnen reconstructs the sequence of experiences through which young Aztec warriors were brought to embrace their duty to their people, to their city, and to the forces that moved the world and the heavens. Subsequent essays explore the survival of Yucatec Maya culture in the face of Spanish conquest and colonisation, the insidious corruption of an austere ideology translated into dangerously novel circumstances, and the multiple paths to the sacred constructed by 'defeated' populations in sixteenth-century Mexico. The collection ends with Clendinnen's transition to the colonial history of her own country: a close and loving reading of the 1841 expedition journal of George Augustus Robinson. Clean copy.

Cycles of the Sun Mysteries of the Moon: The Calendar in Mesoamerican Civilization
by: Malmstrom, Vincent H.

Softcover. Ausyin TX, University of Texas Press, 1st, 1997, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, 282 pages, b&w illustrations. The simple question "How did the Maya come up with a calendar that had only 260 days?" led Vincent Malmstrom to discover an unexpected "hearth" of Mesoamerican culture. In this boldly revisionist book, he sets forth his challenging, new view of the origin and diffusion of Mesoamerican calendrical systems--the intellectual achievement that gave rise to Mesoamerican civilization and culture. Malmstrom posits that the 260-day calendar marked the interval between passages of the sun at its zenith over Izapa, an ancient ceremonial center in the Soconusco region of Mexico's Pacific coastal plain. He goes on to show how the calendar developed by the Zoque people of the region in the fourteenth century B.C. gradually diffused through Mesoamerica into the so-called "Olmec metropolitan area" of the Gulf coast and beyond to the Maya in the east and to the plateau of Mexico in the west. Dead I Well May Be: A Novel
by: Adrian McKinty

Hardcover. NY, Scribner, 1st, 2003, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright, unclipped dust jacket. McKinty's second novel is a brutal tale of revenge starring a young illegal immigrant from Ireland who chooses a criminal career in New York over unemployment in Belfast. Arriving in the city in the early 1990s, the antihero Michael Forsythe lands a spot as an enforcer for Irish mobster Darkey White. Though Forsythe at first keeps his hands relatively clean, he soon racks up a significant number of kills in skirmishes with rival crews as well as with Dominican gangs warring for control of the streets. An affair with his boss's girlfriend leads to a setup: he and his mates are trapped in a drug sting in Mexico and abandoned in a remote prison. "If someone grows up in the civil war of Belfast in the seventies and eighties, perhaps violence is his only form of meaningful expression," McKinty writes early in the novel, and the bulk of the story recounts Forsythe's grisly efforts to escape and avenge himself, including a stint with a Dominican group seeking to oust Darkey White. The pace is brisk and energetic, but Forsythe remains a cipher-a self-educated intellectual who listens to Tolstoy on tape during a stakeout but exhibits puzzlingly little interest in finding an alternative to the gun and the knife. Earth Now: American Photographers and the Environment
by: Ware, Katherine

Hardcover. Santa Fe, Museum of New Mexico Press, 1st, 2011, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright, unclipped dust jacket, 188 pages, color and b&w photos. Since its invention, photography has been used to document and interpret the landscape. Survey photographers in the 1860s were the first environmental advocates, arguing for the U.S. national park system. During the first half of the 20th century photographers Ansel Adams and Eliot Porter were central figures in influencing American attitudes toward wilderness and conservation. This book traces the development of environmental photography beginning with Adams, Porter and others, and the next generation of landscape photographers - Robert Adams, Richard Misrach, Robert Glenn Ketchum, Patrick Nagatani, Mark Klett, whose works confronted the issues of landscape and the environment in less idealised terms. Shifting from the historical framework, the book presents new work by twenty-three photographers working in the U.S., the next wave of artists using the camera to engage the environmental issues of the day.
