Maurice Brazil Prendergastby: Prendergast, Charles

Maurice Brazil Prendergast
by: Prendergast, Charles

Hardcover. Munich, Williams College Museum of Art/Prestel, 1st, 1990, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 812 pages. Blue cloth slip case, 2193 illustrations including 100 color plates. Book still in shrink wrap, in excellent condition. If you think that Maurice Prendergast (1858-1924) only produced decorative park and beach scenes rendered in an abstract style, these two new volumes will set the record straight. Thanks in large part to the generosity of the Eugenie Prendergast Foundation, Mathews has produced a splendid exhibition catalog that surveys the career of the American Impressionist. She also labored for over six years as part of a team of art historians to create a monumental, ten-pound, slip-cased tome that documents the total artistic output of the two Prendergast brothers, Maurice and Charles, A Catalogue Raisonne. A good balance has been struck between the books. The exhibition catalog, of interest to both lay people and scholars, offers a chronological discussion of Maurice's ever-evolving style along with selected works represented by 130 glorious color plates. In contrast, the comprehensive catalogue raisonne , with its highly detailed essays by eight art historians, features 2200 illustrations, 100 of which are in color. All works discussed are represented by an image and catalog entry and range from the sketchbooks, monotypes, and applied graphics of Maurice to the carved and painted panels and sculpture of Charles (1863-1948). A Herculean achievement, the catalogue raisonne will long serve as a cornerstone in the arena of American art history reference.

Maurice Prendergast: The Large Boston Public Garden Sketchbook
by: NA

Hardcover. New York, George Braziller, 1st, 1987, Book: Near Fine, Dust Jacket: None, Hardcover, 44 pages of watercolors. Beautiful large sketchbook illustrating the works of the great Maurice Prendegrast. In association with the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York where the Lehman Prendegrast collection resides. As new in original slipcase. Half white cloth binding over black leatherette boards. This sketchbook, kept primarily between 1895 and 1897, is an exquisite example of the working technique of a great American artist. In it, Prendergast experiments with pattern, shadow, and foliage, using the beautiful Boston Public Garden as his studio. The 88 pages of watercolors, pen and ink, and pencil drawings focus on the colorfully dressed women and children in the park, with glimpses of Victorian Boston outside. The sketchbook reproduced here in facsimile and handsomely boxed recalls his years of study in Paris, yet foreshadows his bold mature style.

Michael Rovner: The Space Betweenby: Wolf, Sylvia

Michael Rovner: The Space Between
by: Wolf, Sylvia

Hardcover. New York, Whitney Museum of American Art/Steidl, 1st, 2002, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Flexible boards, 264 pages. B/w and color illustrations throughout. Published to accompany exhibition at Whitney Museum of American Art in New York. Super clean. By repeatedly re-photographing her images, transferring them from video to film and back again, and manipulating them digitally, Michal Rovner creates photographic and video imagery that abstract familiar subjects like houses, animals, and people into ambiguous and iconic forms. Working with representation but against the traditions of narrative and documentary purpose, her artworks imply a tentative universe, one that is paradoxically peaceful and unsettled, vivid and shrouded, and completely counter-factual. If the changing nature of art has resulted in a general blurring of boundaries--between painting and photography, reality and memory, presence and absence--Rovner mines this haziness, refuses to respect borders, and exists completely in The Space Between.

Modern Americana: Studio Furniture From High Craft to High Glamby: Iovine, Julie and Todd Merrill

Modern Americana: Studio Furniture From High Craft to High Glam
by: Iovine, Julie and Todd Merrill

Hardcover. New York , Rizzoli, 1st, 2008-10-14, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 272 pages, profusely illustrated in color. Like new in publisher's shrink-wrap. In the current world of twentieth-century design collecting, the trend has shifted away from accessible, mass-manufactured modernist furniture and toward designs that were custom-made or produced in very limited editions, with emphasis on American studio design of the 1940s to the 1990s. In contrast to the mass-produced mid-century furniture by Knoll and Herman Miller, American studio designs of the same period focused on novel forms and exquisite craftsmanship. Ranging from the organic shapes of George Nakashima and Vladimir Kagan to metalworks by Paul Evans, these limited production designs were highly sought after in their days by original tastemakers and movie stars. In the last decade, a revival for these rare designs began with connoisseurs such as Tom Ford. Modern Americana is the first full survey of the designs of this prolific but forgotten period, bringing to life again the works of Samuel Marx, Billy Haines, Wendell Castle, T.H. Robsjohn-Gibbings, Karl Springer, James Mont, and many others -- including J.B. Blunk, Michael Coffey, Wharton Esherick, Arthur Espenet Carpenter, Sam Maloof, Jack Rogers Hopkins, Paul Evans & Philip Lloyd Powell, Vladimir Kagan, George Nakashima, Silas Seandel, Charles Hollis Jones, Philip & Kevin LaVerne, Tommi Parzinger, Harvey Probber, Edward Wormley, John Dickinson, Arthur Elrod, and Paul Laszlo.

Monotypes by Maurice Prendergast in the Terra Museum of American Artby: Langdale, Cecily

Monotypes by Maurice Prendergast in the Terra Museum of American Art
by: Langdale, Cecily

Softcover. Chicago, Terra Museum of American Art, 1st, 1984, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, 159 pages, with 72 illustrations, 52 in color. Light edge wear to wrappers, else a very clean, tight copy. These monotypes are presented by Cecily Langdale in this book which was published in 1984. It contains a brief Biography of the artist that describes his influences, travels and contacts, and a general discussion about Monotypes which summarises their chronology, style and technique. These two essays are illustrated by 28 b/w figures. The monotypes are then presented, in colour, with commentaries on each by Langdale that integrate factual information and artistic significance. Addenda include a further 3 monotypes by the artist and there is a Bibliography of relevant publications. Prendergast executed his last monotypes in 1901-02, probably because of his increased interest on the complexities of oil painting techniques that he continued to explore for the remainder of his life. For anyone unfamiliar with monotypes, the information provided by Langdale is extremely useful to enable a full appreciation of the works presented in this book. The artist used oil paint in the preparation of his monotypes and may have used a spoon to transfer the images onto the Japanese tissue support.

O'Keeffe's O'Keeffes - The Artists Collectionby: Lynes, Barbara Buhler

O'Keeffe's O'Keeffes - The Artists Collection
by: Lynes, Barbara Buhler

Hardcover. London, Thames & Hudson, 1st, 2001, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 192 pages. 106 illustrations 97 in color. Still in shrinkwrap. The first exploration of the art that Georgia O'Keeffe retained for her personal collection, including works that have never been publicly exhibited. Georgia O'Keeffe was one of America's preeminent artists and one of the first to experiment with abstract form, though she never abandoned her deep response to and observation of nature. An enormously popular artist, she became identified and respected as an independent American spirit through both her art and her life. At the time of her death in 1986, Georgia O'Keeffe owned more than half of the approximately 2,000 works she had produced during the eighty years she was active as an artist: some 400 works in oil, charcoal, pastel, pencil, and watercolor, as well as more than 700 sketches. For various reasons, she had always kept a portion of her art out of the public eye and these works were not published, exhibited, or available for purchase during her lifetime. Among the works that had been exhibited and sold over the years, some were repurchased by O'Keeffe as they became available. This book explores for the first time the significance of O'Keeffe's collection of her own work. Approximately 75 seminal works, dating from about 1910 through the 1960s and reproduced in full color, document the range and quality of the art that O'Keeffe either chose to retain in her estate or consciously distributed to institutions in her lifetime and as bequests.
