On earth's furrowed brow: the Appalachian farm in photographsby: Barnwell, Tim

On earth's furrowed brow: the Appalachian farm in photographs
by: Barnwell, Tim

Hardcover. New York, Norton, 1st, 2007, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 160 pages. Like new in publisher's shrink-wrap. For over twenty-five years Tim Barnwell has explored the southern Appalachian region, documenting the farm culture, visiting with and photographing the people of its isolated mountain enclaves. The photographs in this collection provide a window onto a world that is quickly fading. Barnwell honors the richness and rhythms of everyday life-people in their homes and at work in the fields-and captures the beauty of the North Carolina mountains. These intimate portraits are complemented by oral histories, derived from conversations between the author and his subjects, through which individual stories unfold, rich in humor, joy, loss, and wisdom. 100 duotone photographs

On the Edge of Your Seat: Popular Theater and Film in Early Twentieth-Century American Artby: McDonnell, Patricia

On the Edge of Your Seat: Popular Theater and Film in Early Twentieth-Century American Art
by: McDonnell, Patricia

Dust jacket has slight wear to edges. Inside is bright and clean, with many b&w and color illustrations throughout. A nice copy. "More than one hundred paintings, drawings, watercolors, and photographs that convey the highly charged experience of attending vaudeville, early moving-picture shows, and other forms of popular amusements. These works of art reveal much about the beginnings of modernity in the United States and about how artists in early twentieth-century America searched for new pictorial vocabularies to express the profound change and dynamism of their time."

Blanchard shows that it was a wide-ranging popular movement resisted by the moral guardians of Victorianism but advanced by visionary women.

Oxford Project, The
by: Feldstein, Peter (Photographer)

Paperback. New York, Welcome Books, 1st, 2008, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, 287 pages. Hardcover with no dust jacket. A very clean, unmarked copy with only minor edgewear. Holographic photograph on front cover. In 1984, photographer Peter Feldstein set out to photograph every single resident of his town, Oxford, Iowa (pop. 676). He converted an abandoned storefront on Main Street into a makeshift studio and posted fliers inviting people to stop by. At first they trickled in slowly, but in the end, nearly all of Oxford stood before Feldstein's lens. Twenty years later, Feldstein decided to do it again. Only this time he invited writer Stephen G. Bloom to join him, and together they went in search of the same Oxford residents Feldstein had originally shot two decades earlier. Some had moved. Most had stayed. Others had passed away. All were marked by the passage of time.

Pacific Standard Time : Los Angeles Art, 1945-1980
by: Rebecca Peabody , Andrew Perchuk, et al.

Hardcover. US, Getty Publications, 1st, 2011, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, 352 pages. Hardcover with dust jacket. Clean, unmarked copy with only minor wear to dust jacket. Like new in publisher's shrink-wrap. Documents the burgeoning Southern Californian post-war art scene, with several essays following a more or less chronological order, and hundreds of illustrations of artworks, but also of art people (a wonderful 1963 photograph of Marcel Duchamp playing chess with a naked Eve Babitz in front of a replica of his Large Glass in Pasadena, photographs of artists working in their studios, etc). Some names are well known, others less so, but it is the versatility, the creativity and, above all, the richness and depth of this LA art scene that strike the reader-viewer through these richly illustrated pages. The birth of a genuine pop art in California (thanks to some of the most gifted artdealers in the US), of conceptual art, the creation of a new way of making sculpture, all those aspects are tackled in an informative and erudite (sometimes too erudite, though...)text that makes this book a more than valuable addition to the literature on post-war American art.

Polly and Her Pals: Complete Sunday Comics 1928-1930
by: Cliff Sterrett (Author, Cover Design, Artist)

Hardcover. San Diego CA , IDW Publishing, 1st, 2016, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Hardcover. Extensive color illustrations by Cliff Sterrett throughout. Clean, unmarked copy. Sterrett whimsically played with every element of his feature, and was blissfully free of self-conciousness or restraint. Like all truly great comedians, he often recruits the reader, and lets them in on the gag as it plays out, while the actual characters are clueless. It's a deceptively complicated comedic gift. Other times its pure slapstick, with the unvarnished roughness and outrageous takes that characterized the period, but it's still out laugh loud funny, and honestly, when's the last time you really laughed at a comic strip? Sterrett stretched the limits of comics with the freedom that accompanied an art form yet to deigned respectable, and he produced one of the most personally stamped features in comic strip history.

Hardcover. New York, W. W. Norton, 1st, 2006, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 237 pages, b&w illustrations, 16 color plates. A very clean, tight copy. Thomas Eakins, a native of Philadelphia, painted two worlds: one sure of its valuesthe surgeons, inventors, musicians, and athletes of his timeand another that reflected his own struggles with depression and sexual identity. In this evenhanded account of those struggles, William S. McFeely sheds new light on Eakins's genius and on the evocative melancholy of his portraits, particularly of women, which include many of his remarkable wife, Susan McDowell Eakins. Those deeply perceptive paintings may be the greatest expressions of his art.
