Hardcover. NY, Assouline, 1st, 2005, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 80 pages. Morris Lapidus, the famous mid-century architect, outraged the architectural profession and riled critics with an architecture that was popularly embraced. His Miami Beach resort hotels - the Fontainebleau, the Eden Roc, and the Bal Harbour Sheraton - are synonymous with the glamour of Miami Beach in the 50s. Lapidus hotels are infamous as the stomping grounds of the Rat Pack and their fellow movie stars. Yet, during his life he was never published in architectural magazines and was discredited by the architectural profession - before undergoing a renaissance as a prophet of postmodernism. This book establishes the importance of his work and offers private insights into a man who once said why be exotic in private?

In 1827 the young Edward Lear (1812-1888) began to draw 'for bread and cheese'; later he became a renowned wildlife and landscape artist and, later still, the author of the famous limericks and songs. Reproducing many of his paintings and drawings, Jenny Uglow's critically acclaimed biography describes Lear the artist, traveler, writer of nonsense verse and self-appointed exile, and aims to discover 'how the layers are laid down, how they overlap and twist like strata' in a strange contradictory life of art and nonsense. He rarely spoke about his personal life, and his close friends were few and love interests fewer. Until now, there have been only two known romantic pursuits prior to Hopper's marriage to Josephine Nivison in 1924: a brief relationship in Paris with an English girl in 1906-7 and another spanning several years with an older French woman beginning in New York in 1915. The discovery of fifty-eight previously unknown letters and one note from Alta Hilsdale (1884-1948) to Hopper brings to light a previously unknown romantic relationship. Hilsdale, who was from Minnesota and spent time in New York and Paris, sent letters to Hopper at various home and studio addresses during the course of ten years. Reverend Arthayer Sanborn, a close friend of Edward and Josephine Hopper, discovered the letters in Hopper's childhood home in Nyack, New York, after the artist's death. Fewer than ten people have had the opportunity to read these letters, and they are published in their entirety for the first time."

Calvin Tomkins first discovered the work of Robert Rauschenberg in the late 1950s, when he began to look seriously at contemporary art. While gazing at Rauschenberg's painting Double Feature, Tomkins felt compelled to make some kind of literal connection to the work, and it is in that sprit that "for the last forty years it's been [his] ambition to write about contemporary art not as a critic or a judge, but as a participant." Tomkins has spent many of those years writing about Robert Rauschenberg, whom he rapidly came to see as "one of the most inventive and influential artists of his generation." So it seemed natural to make Rauschenberg the focus of Off the Wall, which deals with the radical changes that have made advanced visual art such a powerful force in the world.Off the Wall chronicles the astonishingly creative period of the 1950s and 1960s, a high point in American art. In his in his collaborations with Merce Cunningham and John Cage, and as a pivotal figure linking abstract expressionism and pop art, Rauschenberg was part of a revolution during which artists moved art off the walls of museums and galleries and into the center of the social scene.
