The small book is 18 pages, each with double-page color illustrations by Henrick Drescher, each with interactive parts. According to the story Beastie's fur is pulled, his pop-up eyes jiggled, his boot (removed from his pop up foot) is scratched & sniffed, his privacy intruded upon as his shower curtain pulled away, his boogers poked, his miniature book reveal beastie's fantasies of revenge, as finally Judy and Paul are swallowed up by poor beastie and a mirror reveals who may be the next naughty child to incur beastie's wrath. All of these interactive pull and poke activities can be performed by the reader. SIGNED on the front cover in silver ink, with his initials, by Henrick Drescher in the year of publication.

Illustrated profusely in b&w and color by John R. Neill, including color illustrated endpapers. Both hinges, front and rear, cracked. Previous owner's bookplate on half title page. There is a clear tape repair to front fly leaf, and the cloth spine at one time was loose, but now reglued. A fair copy only but clean and attractive internally.

Debby Atwell does a lovely job of conveying the sweep of history. The book's two narrative threads--the histories of the United States and of six generations of Pearl's family--intertwine neatly. The pictures are a delight, and their folk art style lends a nice sense of continuity to the book.
