E. O. Hopp

E. O. Hopp

Hardcover. NY, W. W. Norton , 1st, 2007, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 176 pages, 120 b&w images. Once locked away in European archives, these early modernist photographs of America rival those of Steichen and Evans. Emil Otto Hoppe was born in Munich in 1878 but lived in London from 1900 until his death in 1972. He was an early and important modernist whose seminal views of the United States in the 1920s rival those of his peers: Paul Strand, Edward Steichen, Alfred Stieglitz, and Walker Evans. His work shows us an America as only an outsider could: brave, new, and grand in scale but with a hint of trouble brewing in the gaps between its multicultural and economic diversities.

E.J. Bellocq: Storyville Portraits
by: Bellocq, E.J. and Lee Friedlander

Softcover. New York , Museum of Modern Art , 1970, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Unpaginated (86 pages), maroon illustrated wrappers. This is an album of early photographs taken of the New York red light district around 1912 by Bellocq. Friedlander took prints from the original plates for this book and they provide a fascinating documentary on bordellos at this interesting time in history. Reputedly never taking 'dirty' pictures of the girls, Bellocq confined his endeavors to recording for posterity these ladies in both clad and unclad poses. The foreword takes the form of a conversation between Friedlander and Dan Leyrer, who was also a photographer and a contemporary of Bellocq.

East Harlem: The Postwar Years
by: Leo Goldstein, A.D. Coleman, et al.

Hardcover. NY, powerHouse Books, 1st, 2019, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket. For some 70 years, Leo Goldstein's East Harlembodyof work remained mostly untouched and unseen. The silver gelatin prints were catalogued in 2016,and a selection is gathered here for the first time. The photographs were taken over a number of years, beginning in 1949 when Goldstein was a memberof the Photo League. The East Harlem corpus, edited by Regina Monfort, represents an important and unique addition to thephotographic history of New York City. Because thereare no negatives in existence, it was of particularimportance to preserve the images in book form andmake them available to the public. The selected images reflect the postwar years in theEast Harlem community, which would grow intoa center of Puerto Rican culture and life in the U.S.From the families portrayed gathering on stoops, tothe kids at their shoeshine stations, to youths playingball in the streets, to posters on neighborhood walls,Goldstein's images of East Harlem provide a windowinto the socio-economic, cultural, and politicallandscape of the time.

Eugene Atget: Unknown Paris
by: David Harris/Atget

Softcover. NY, The New Press, 1st, 2003, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, 199 pages. For thirty years, Eugene Atget photographed the historic core of Paris, its buildings and monuments, its ancient streets and civic spaces, its public parks and gardens. With the exception of his earliest photographs, he chose not to represent a particular site by a single, definitive photograph but produced sequences of interrelated images that create a cumulative portrait. A collection of case studies of archetypal urban settings, this book examines Atget's approach to photography. It features 240 of his photographs-nearly all of which have never been published-assembled to display the integral relationship between the photographer's working method and his subject matter, revealing the character of Le Vieux Paris itself. Clean copy.

Eve Arnold: Magnum Legacyby: Janine di Giovanni, Susan Meiselas , et al.

Eve Arnold: Magnum Legacy
by: Janine di Giovanni, Susan Meiselas , et al.

Hardcover. NY, Prestel, 1st, 2015, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Hardcover, 192 pages, color and b&w images. This first volume in a major new series of illustrated biographies of Magnum photographers traces the life and achievements of Eve Arnold, who captured an incredible array of subjects with remarkable clarity and compassion. Eve Arnold (1912-2012) was born to a poor immigrant family in Philadelphia and became a photographer by chance. In 1950 Arnold was a 38-year-old Long Island housewife when she enrolled in a six-week photography course that led to her groundbreaking photo essay on black fashion models in Harlem. She went on to become the first woman to join Magnum Photos and, eventually, one of the most accomplished photojournalists of her time. Filled with reproductions of Arnold's acclaimed photographs, shot in both color and black and white, as well as previously unseen archival images, this biography relates Arnold's bold images to the fascinating story of their making. Renowned for her intimate portraits of figures such as Marilyn Monroe, Malcolm X, and Queen Elizabeth, Arnold was equally comfortable documenting the lives of the poor and dispossessed. "I don't see anybody as either ordinary or extraordinary. I see them simply as people in front of my lens." To her images of migrant workers, disabled veterans, and protesters for civil rights in the US and against apartheid in South Africa, she brought an unflinching eye and a strong sense of social justice. This highly engrossing narrative tells a compelling story of an intrepid artist whose life's purpose was to report on the lives of others.

Evening Ragas: A Photographer in Indiaby: Moore, Derry

Evening Ragas: A Photographer in India
by: Moore, Derry

Hardcover. London, John Murray, 1st, 1997, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 128 pages. This is a magnificent portrait of post-Raj India before the modern world swept across the subcontinent. Featuring 100 superbly reproduced, full-page photographs, this is Derry Moore's splendid photographic evocation of an independent India that had all but vanished by the late 1970s--above all, an India still untouched by mass tourism. Initially, Moore set out to photograph the princely palaces, but he became increasingly intrigued by the lesser-known buildings, and those that inhabited them. In them, he found eccentricity, originality, and an extraordinary hybrid of Indian and British taste.

Fights, The
by: Hoff, Charles/Richard Ford

Hardcover. San Francisco , Chronicle Books , 1st, 1996, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, 127 pages. Hardcover. Extensive b&w photography throughout. Illustrated frontispiece. Clean, unmarked copy with only minor wear to dust jacket. Hoff's skill as a photographer is shown plainly throughout this book. He was known for using very little film, which increases an objective appreciation of his skill; he understood boxing and could anticipate moments of significance and arrange them to create technically superb photographs, without making dozens of pictures. The boxers depicted in this volume are now historical figures, but so are these photographs, of which Hoff is perhaps the best example. Live television coverage has changed the nature of boxing photography irrecoverably since the days when Hoff was photographing the sport. This volume is important as a historical document, then, from two angles - firstly as a record of what many perceive as the golden age of boxing, but also as an archive of amazing photography skills which are now impossible for photographers to learn, let alone master. A must for fans of both serious photography and boxing.

Free Spirit in a Troubled Worldby: John Phillips and Walter Keller

Free Spirit in a Troubled World
by: John Phillips and Walter Keller

Hardcover. NY, Scalo/DAP, 1st, 1996, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 572 pages, b&w photos. As a photographer for Life magazine from 1936 to 1959, John Phillips witnessed his share of troubles. His discerning and unflinching eye captured images as horrific as concentration camps and battlefield remnants with a kind of detachment that seemed to share his audience's senses of shock and outrage. He also found himself in the company of such illustrious leaders as FDR, Churchill, Stalin, and Tito during his prodigious travels across the world. Phillips, who died in 1996, was with the magazine from its inception, and his work helped to cement the publication's reputation for capturing unforgettable moments and images. Though plenty of lighter moments grace these pages, many of the included photographs are devoted to exposing one of the most turbulent periods of the 20th century, giving the book a historic sense of tragedy that can still be felt 50 years later.

Gene Smith's Sink: A Wide-Angle View by: Sam Stephenson

Gene Smith's Sink: A Wide-Angle View
by: Sam Stephenson

Hardcover. NY, Farrar, Straus and Giroux, 1st, 2017, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket, 206 pages. Famously unabashed, W. Eugene Smith was photography's most celebrated humanist. As a photo essayist at Life magazine in the 1940s and '50s, he established himself as an intimate chronicler of human culture. His photographs of war and disaster, villages and metropolises, doctors and midwives, revolutionized the role of images in journalism, transforming photography for decades to come. When Smith died in 1978, he left behind eighteen dollars in the bank and forty-four thousand pounds of archives. He was only fifty-nine, but he was flat worn-out. His death certificate read "stroke," but, as was said of the immortal jazzman Charlie Parker, Smith died of "everything," from drug and alcohol benders to weeklong work sessions with no sleep. Lured by the intoxicating trail of people that emerged from Smith's stupefying archive, Sam Stephenson began a quest to trace his footsteps. In Gene Smith's Sink, Stephenson merges traditional biography with rhythmic digressions to revive Smith's life and legacy. Traveling across twenty-nine states, Japan, and the Pacific, Stephenson profiles a lively cast of characters, including the playwright Tennessee Williams, to whom Smith likened himself; the avant-garde filmmaker Stan Brakhage, with whom he once shared a Swiss chalet; the artist Mary Frank, who was married to his friend Robert Frank; the jazz pianists Thelonious Monk and Sonny Clark, whose music was taped by Smith in his loft; and a series of obscure caregivers who helped keep Smith on his feet. The distillation of twenty years of research, Gene Smith's Sink is an unprecedented look into the photographer's potent legacy and the subjects around him. Clean, bright copy.
