Seeing Mexico Photographed: The Work of Horne, Casasola, Modotti, and Alvarez Bravoby: Leonard Folgarait

Seeing Mexico Photographed: The Work of Horne, Casasola, Modotti, and Alvarez Bravo
by: Leonard Folgarait

Hardcover. New Haven CT, Yale University Press, 1st, 2008, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 208 pages. This engrossing book presents the photographs of four historically engaged artists and explains what they reveal about the highly dramatic revolutionary and post-revolutionary period in Mexico from 1910 to 1935. The works of these photographers--American Walter H. Horne, Italian Tina Modotti, and Mexicans Agustin Victor Casasola and Manuel Alvarez Bravo--are discussed not just as windows onto events but as artworks that offer both objective reporting and stylized expression. The twenty-five years covered in the book encompass some of the most convulsive developments in Mexico, from the violence and cataclysmic changes wrought by the Mexican Revolution to the immense struggles to forge a new nation and a new government. During this period, the work of the four photographers--two primarily documentary, one propagandistic, and one artistic and personal--enabled Mexicans to understand the forces that had brought their nation to armed conflict and social transformation.

Seeing Silicon Valley: Life inside a Fraying America by: Mary Beth Meehan / Fred Turner

Seeing Silicon Valley: Life inside a Fraying America
by: Mary Beth Meehan / Fred Turner

Softcover. University of Chicago Press, 1st, 2021, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, pictorial wrappers, 112 pages. It's hard to imagine a place more central to American mythology today than Silicon Valley. To outsiders, the region glitters with the promise of extraordinary wealth and innovation. But behind this image lies another Silicon Valley, one segregated by race, class, and nationality in complex and contradictory ways. Its beautiful landscape lies atop underground streams of pollutants left behind by decades of technological innovation, and while its billionaires live in compounds, surrounded by redwood trees and security fences, its service workers live in their cars. With arresting photography and intimate stories, Seeing Silicon Valley makes this hidden world visible. Instead of young entrepreneurs striving for efficiency in minimalist corporate campuses, we see portraits of struggle--families displaced by an impossible real estate market, workers striving for a living wage, and communities harmed by environmental degradation. If the fate of Silicon Valley is the fate of America--as so many of its boosters claim--then this book gives us an unvarnished look into the future. Clean copy.

Shadows of War: A German Soldier's Lost Photographs of World War IIby: Petra Bopp, Willi Rose , et al.

Shadows of War: A German Soldier's Lost Photographs of World War II
by: Petra Bopp, Willi Rose , et al.

Hardcover. NY, Abrams, 1st, 2005, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 192 pages. Shadows of War presents an astonishing collection of previously unpublished, unknown photographs of life at the front lines in the German war machine during World War II, taken by a common foot soldier. The work of a gifted amateur, Willi Rose's images present a powerful vision of a largely suppressed aspect of the war. These fractured glimpses of the world at war, from quotidian tasks and moments of leisure to scenes of death and destruction, reveal one man's experience of the epic flow of history. A miller in the years before World War II, Rose was drafted into the German army in October 1939 and served as a motorbike messenger on the front, first in France and then in Russia. He was wounded twice and was later captured by the Polish army, eventually returning home in June 1946. Throughout his military service, Rose sent home photographs that he took of the action, mostly along the Eastern Front. Discovered by his widow after his death, these images form a unique photographic document of one soldier's war.

Shaking the Dust of Ages: Gypsies and Wanderers of the Central Asian Steppeby: Ljalja Kuznetsova , Inge Morath, et al.

Shaking the Dust of Ages: Gypsies and Wanderers of the Central Asian Steppe
by: Ljalja Kuznetsova , Inge Morath, et al.

Hardcover. NY, Aperture, 1st, 1998, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 168 pages. A native of Kazakhstan, Ljalja Kuznetsova traversed the expanses of the Central Asian steppe to photograph the gypsies, or Roma people, whose mysterious comings and goings have fascinated her since she was a child. Shaking the Dust of Ages: Gypsies and Wanderers of the Central Asian Steppe is the first book devoted to these pictures, for which Kuznetsova won the Mother Jones Leica Medal of Excellence and the Paris Grand Prix for Photography. Kuznetsova's photographs present rare, intimate portraits of gypsies-- whose freedom from the ties of civilization is reflected in the wild winds and unlimited vistas of the steppe landscape. As Kuznetsova traveled through Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, and the Ukraine, the gypsies continually inspired her. She found in them a people without frontiers, living independent of politics, religious dispute, or social class. Though their presence on the steppe is becoming a thing of the past, Kuznetsova's cast of characters and their world seem timeless in these images.

Shoot: Photography of the Moment
by: Ken Miller , Penny Martin, et al.

Softcover. NY, Rizzoli, 1st, 2009, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, 208 pages. Shoot gathers over 20 photographers whose work focuses on capturing a moment rather than elaborate lighting setups or controlled, manufactured scenarios. Employing the most basic photographic tools--a single-lens reflex camera and natural light--they must rely on their instincts and their ability to interact with a situation to create a dynamic image. This freewheeling approach reflects an era in which we are increasingly bombarded by images, and the emotional resonance of images has become an important part of our visual vocabulary. The book documents the influence of an older generation of art photographers, such as the legendary Nan Goldin and Wolfgang Tillmans, and expands on a younger generation of photographers, including Tim Barber and J. H. Engstrom, to show how this style has gained traction and influence.

Signs of Lifeby: Sekaer, Peter

Signs of Life
by: Sekaer, Peter

Hardcover. GR, Steidl, 1st, 2010, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 200 pages. Peter Sekaer (1901-50) emerged as an artist in the company of Ben Shahn, Berenice Abbott, and Walker Evans. This book intends to show how he stepped from their benign shadows to build his own distinctive style. It is the first monograph to show the full range of his accomplishments. Sekaer's early work combines dispassionate images with others that show his concern and intuitive grasp of the human condition. Many of his most memorable photographs were made while fulfilling mundane assignments for various government agencies. Sekaer had none of the reformer's passion found in the works of Jacob Riis or Lewis Hine. His stance was more that of the artist/anthropologist, who delighted in recording the artifacts and gestures that defined American society in the 1930s.

Silent Places: Landscapes of Jewish Life and Loss in Eastern Europeby: Gusky/Judith Miller, Jeffrey

Silent Places: Landscapes of Jewish Life and Loss in Eastern Europe
by: Gusky/Judith Miller, Jeffrey

Hardcover. NY, Overlook Press, 1st, 2003, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 180 pages. Jeff Gusky, a doctor of emergency medicine, decided at the age of 42 that he wanted to better confront the reality of modern Jewish history. A self-taught photographer who subsequently learned to make museum quality prints, he bought what he calls "a good, journalist-type camera and some lenses" and traveled to Poland-once the home of the largest concentration of Diaspora Jews. He read the instruction manuals on the plane en route. Over four trips, accompanied each time by a top Polish guide, Gusky traveled through the country, beyond the city ghettos and the sites of concentration camps, into remote villages where Jews had lived and worked for almost 1,000 years before the Holocaust-capturing on film the austere landscapes and the remains of a once thriving Jewish culture. The silence is deafening: here are Jewish cemeteries full of broken gravestones, ruined synagogues filled with trash and disfigured with graffiti, a Jewish home now used as a public toilet-"where people lived, walked, worshipped, and were, ultimately, exterminated," says Gusky. The doleful, understated clarity of what he saw and photographed captures a poignant sense of loss-making at the same time an indelible connection to the past.

Small Town America
by: Plowden, David

Hardcover. NY, Abrams, 1st, 1994, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket, 160 pages, b&w plates. An accomplished photographer of the American scene presents a unique artistic record that captures a vanishing part of our country, the main streets, barber shops, schoolhouses, and inhabitants of our small towns. In his 19th book on the American scene, Plowden has focused on what epitomizes small towns-before this endangered species disappears altogether. The well-produced images, arranged roughly by topic (e.g., schools, theaters, churches, home interiors, restaurants, stores, and grain elevators) and representing towns in many states (including Iowa, Kansas, West Virginia, New York, Minnesota, and Idaho), speak eloquently of small-town life. Even more so, they speak of change; by the time Plowden photographed these towns, most had been cut off from their rural heritages. Nevertheless, the photographs convey order, calm, and congeniality; the best of them evoke the work of Walker Evans, who, like Plowden, left scenes unaltered when he photographed them. Clean copy.

Sojourners and Settlers: The Yemeni Immigrant Experience by: Jonathan Friedlander (Ed.)

Sojourners and Settlers: The Yemeni Immigrant Experience
by: Jonathan Friedlander (Ed.)

Hardcover. Salt Lake City, University of Utah Press, 1st, 1988, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket, 188 pages. 141 color and black and white photographs by Milton Rogovin, Tony Maine, Ron Kelley, the essayists, and Yemeni workers. "What did the American astronauts find when the first landed on the moon?" "Yemenis, looking for work." High wages and easy work - these are the myths that lure Yemeni workers abroad, and especially to the United States, which has seen generations of migrant laborers. But the realities of migrant labor are something else. In Sojourners and Settlers, leading scholars of history, anthropology, folklore, sociology, and political science have joined with photographers and critics to present an interdisciplinary look at the phenomenon of labor migration. They reveal drastically changing rural and urban environments in Yemen, and in the United States, strenuous work weeks, bleak farm work camp conditions, plant shut downs, culture shock, and cautious assimilation. Under Friedlander's editorship, these reports of the ordinary events of Yemeni workers' lives become studies in courage, persistence, and dignity. Clean copy.

Soulmaker: The Times of Lewis Hine
by: Nemerov, Alexander

Hardcover. Princeton NJ, Princeton University Press, 1st, 2016, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket. Between 1908 and 1917, the American photographer and sociologist Lewis Hine (1874-1940) took some of the most memorable pictures of child workers ever made. Traveling around the United States while working for the National Child Labor Committee, he photographed children in textile mills, coal mines, and factories from Vermont and Massachusetts to Georgia, Tennessee, and Missouri. Using his camera as a tool of social activism, Hine had a major influence on the development of documentary photography. But many of his pictures transcend their original purpose. Concentrating on these photographs, Alexander Nemerov reveals the special eeriness of Hine's beautiful and disturbing work as never before. Richly illustrated, the book also includes arresting contemporary photographs by Jason Francisco of the places Hine documented. Clean copy.

SPLIT SECONDS: HONG KONG
by: Abe Kogan

Hardcover. NY, Abrams/Cameron Books, 1st, 2020, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 288 pages. Hong Kong provides a stunning backdrop for Abe Kogan's skillfully rendered black-and-white photography. The third in the Split Seconds series, following Havana and Florence, Hong Kong explores the city famous for its dense urbanism and high-rise marvels. The towering obelisks and repetitive facades of the modern megacity stand in stark contrast to its complex cultural roots--a city born of compromise between Chinese tradition and British influence. Kogan's strikingly evocative images showcase this intersection of influence with intimate portraits of bustling street life, iconic skylines, claustrophobic residential areas, maritime hubs, rugged coastline, and the parks and public spaces that provide a respite from the unrelenting vigor of the city. Steichen At War
by: Christopher Phillips

Hardcover. NY, Abrams, 1st, 1981, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 256 pages, in a bright, unclipped dust jacket. Edward Steichen virtually created the world of high fashion and advertising photography, but his military coverage of two World Wars was equally remarkable. He received the Croix de Guerre for pioneering photoreconnaissance as part of Pershing's American Expeditionary Force in 1918, and his team's shots of the American Navy's advance across the Pacific from 1942 to 1945 form the visual core of our memory of that crucial period. Tragically, however, Steichen's thousands of incisive images of military action were dissolved into the morass of the National Archives, and attempts to retrieve specific subjects of his are often as effective as trying to taste fine brandy after pouring it into a swimming pool. Hence the value of retrospectives such as Christopher Phillips' hefty book on Steichen's coverage of the U.S. Navy in the Pacific War. Combining skillfully chosen anecdotes from Steichen's life with vivid evocation of the pioneering photographer's joy in capturing memorable images, Phillips gives us not only an unforgettable slice of Steichen's work but also enough historical background to let readers sense the excitement and drama of a nation's best young warriors fighting for freedom's sake. Lieutenant Commander Steichen's parade of images didn't begin until after the pivotal Battle of Midway in June 1942, but the ensuing carrier warfare and savage island fighting appear in unforgettable clarity. As in all great photographs, the humanity of the subjects shines through amid their triumph, or pain, or mere existence. Students of both military history and photography can spend days poring over these astonishingly revealing images.

From that experience grew the idea of taking part in different kinds of sheep and cattle musters throughout N.z. from the rivers of Westland to the dunes of Northland, from the remote east coast to the South Island's vast Molesworth Station. The idea was to capture the glory of these uniquely NZ farming adventures which had already endured intact for 100 years, before inevitable changes in landscape and methods. This book is a feast of back-country colour and action which you will never ever get to see unless invited along. Mild tanning to dust jacket at top and bottom edge. Otherwise clean and bright.

Sunday Football (East London Photo Stories)by: Chris Baker

Sunday Football (East London Photo Stories)
by: Chris Baker

Hardcover. London, Hoxton Mini Press, 1st, 2017, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Hardcover, 128 pages, color photos. Every Sunday a small army of amateur footballers, often hung-over and smoking cigarettes, descend on Hackney Marshes, East London for a game of beloved "footie." Known as the "spiritual home of amateur football"--this is where David Beckham first played)--the marshes consist of some eighty pitches where more than fifty matches are played each week from September until April. Photographer Chris Baker, a keen amateur footballer himself, has spent the past three seasons documenting this ritual of sports camaraderie. Players turn up late, discussing last night's antics or conquests, before playing and shouting at the ref and then eating oranges at half time. There are occasional brawls, many laughs, and very occasionally some good football before post-match pints are followed by a return home to the missus. This is Sunday League football at its best. Baker's photographs are coupled with a selection of quotes and stories from the players that are often hilarious and always revealing.

Susan Meiselas: Mediationsby: Meiselas, Susan

Susan Meiselas: Mediations
by: Meiselas, Susan

Hardcover. Bologna, Damiani, 1st, 2018, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Hardcover, 184 pages. This exhaustive monograph of Susan Meiselas will be released in occasion of the retrospective that will take place at Tapies Foundation in Barcelone, Jeu de Paume in Paris and SFMOMA in San Francisco. Mediations is published by Damiani/Jeu de Paume/Fondation Tapies. This exhibition and monograph propose a selection of works from the 1970s to today which reveal the particular approach of Susan Meiselas toward to the underlying reasons for making photographs, how the image concerns it's subject as much as the photographer and the role that these images can have at different levels in society and particularly in photojournalism. She questions the relationship between the image and the subject in such a way as to include the people portrayed in the image in the process of the making. There is nothing systematic in her approach: each work expresses in a very strong manner that context is vital to the understanding of photography. Therefore her work is specific to the persons portrayed, to the notion of community to which they belong and to the locality of the geographic and political territories that the artist addresses. The way of the showing the work is equally a part of the thought process. How does the spectator behold the artwork? It is often comprised of many parts, made in different media: each "layer" is used to document a level of meaning. For Meiselas one should be able to grasp why the image was taken. Both the subject of the image and the context in which the images are shown are taken into account in the elaboration of each project.

Sylvia Plachy: Self Portrait With Cows Going Home (Aperture Monograph S)by: Plachy, Sylvia

Sylvia Plachy: Self Portrait With Cows Going Home (Aperture Monograph S)
by: Plachy, Sylvia

Hardcover. NY, Aperture, 1st, 2005, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 208 pages. Photographer Plachy proves you can go home again and again in this stunning photographic voyage to her native Hungary. Plachy weaves together contemporary and vintage photographs, mementos and pictures of movie sets (including several from her son Adrien Brody?s Oscar-winning turn in Roman Polanski?s The Pianist). Together, these pieces come together like a puzzle, recreating an Eastern Europe that has weathered dictatorships, two world wars and is now opening up, confusedly, to democracy. The images of stray shadows, apartment buildings studded with bullet holes, and eerie reflections are as evocative as they are subtle. They remind us that great photographs don?t have to rely on shock value to move or disturb. Plachy accents her work with memorable vignettes of her childhood in Communist Hungary as well as of her repeated journeys back east as an adult and an American citizen. One of the most touching of these small stories involves the photographer?s grief-stricken mother, inconsolable after the deaths of her parents in Auschwitz. One day, while her mother stared at a framed photo of her deceased parents, she saw a gold moth land on the glass. "From then on golden butterflies and moths were sacred," writes Plachy. As the book goes on, relative after relative surrounds herself with images to bring back lost loved ones. By the book?s end, we see Plachy herself doing the same thing and realize that through this book she has invited us on a private tour of a lost world, a journey that?s as poignant as it is unforgettable. 22 four-color and 98 duotone images.

The Americansby: Frank, Robert & Jack Kerouac

The Americans
by: Frank, Robert & Jack Kerouac

Softcover. NY, Pantheon, reprint, 1986, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover. With an introduction by Jack Kerouac. Robert Frank's The Americans changed the course of twentieth-century photography. In 83 photographs, Frank looked beneath the surface of American life to reveal a people plagued by racism, ill-served by their politicians and rendered numb by a rapidly expanding culture of consumption. Yet he also found novel areas of beauty in simple, overlooked corners of American life. And it was not just Frank's subject matter--cars, jukeboxes and even the road itself that redefined the icons of America; it was also his seemingly intuitive, immediate, off-kilter style, as well as his method of brilliantly linking his photographs together thematically, conceptually, formally and linguistically, that made The Americans so innovative. More of an ode or a poem than a literal document, the book is as powerful and provocative today as it was 75 years ago. This edition was printed in Switzerland by Jean Genoud under the direst supervision of Robert Frank. Clean, bright copy.

The Cruel Radiance: Photography and Political Violenceby: Linfield, Susie

The Cruel Radiance: Photography and Political Violence
by: Linfield, Susie

Hardcover. Chicago, University of Chicago Press, 1st, 2010, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket, 321 pages, b&w illustrations. In The Cruel Radiance, Susie Linfield challenges the idea that photographs of political violence exploit their subjects and pander to the voyeuristic tendencies of their viewers. Instead she argues passionately that looking at such images--and learning to see the people in them--is an ethically and politically necessary act that connects us to our modern history of violence and probes the human capacity for cruelty. Grappling with critics from Walter Benjamin and Bertolt Brecht to Susan Sontag and the postmoderns--and analyzing photographs from such events as the Holocaust, China's Cultural Revolution, and recent terrorist acts--Linfield explores the complex connection between photojournalism and the rise of human rights ideals. In the book's concluding section, she examines the indispensable work of Robert Capa, James Nachtwey, and Gilles Peress and asks how photography should respond to the increasingly nihilistic trajectory of modern warfare.
