And in its midst was Arlene Gottfried, whose eye for the sublime caught it all. Sometimes Overwhelming, her second powerHouse Book, is a manic yet romantic ode to the people of New York City in the 1970s and 80s. From Coney Island to a Hasid at Riis Beach's nude bay to the disco nights of sexual abandon and the children in the original Village Halloween parade, Sometimes Overwhelming is a delightfully lighthearted look at the most outrageous people you might ever see.

Between 1908 and 1917, the American photographer and sociologist Lewis Hine (1874-1940) took some of the most memorable pictures of child workers ever made. Traveling around the United States while working for the National Child Labor Committee, he photographed children in textile mills, coal mines, and factories from Vermont and Massachusetts to Georgia, Tennessee, and Missouri. Using his camera as a tool of social activism, Hine had a major influence on the development of documentary photography. But many of his pictures transcend their original purpose. Concentrating on these photographs, Alexander Nemerov reveals the special eeriness of Hine's beautiful and disturbing work as never before. Richly illustrated, the book also includes arresting contemporary photographs by Jason Francisco of the places Hine documented. Clean copy.

Anton Corbijn initiated a new era in portrait photography for the rock and pop music scene with his atmospheric, often melancholy images. Here is a photographer who travels the world, tirelessly seeking to capture its idols in quiet moments and catch a trace of their essential being behind all the fame and glamour. Taken primarily in black and white with a hand-held camera and without auxiliary lighting, most of Corbijn's photographs are shot in those quiet moments between performances. Beyond the reach of the glaring spotlights, on the dark side of the star cult - literally and metaphorically - Corbijn finds what interests him more than gesture, image or glamour: the unusual degree of privacy and closeness that turns his portraits into genuine character studies.Corbijn has now moved beyond the boundaries of music photography and Star Trak reads like a visual encyclopedia of the icons of our culture, gathering together outstanding personalities from the worlds of film, literature, rock music and fashion. He visits film directors Wim Wenders, David Lynch, and Martin Scorsese, actors Johnny Depp, Gerard Depardieu and Jodie Foster, and alongside the older rebels - like Mick Jagger and Leonard Cohen - he includes the enfants terribles of the Eighties and Nineties - Kurt Cobain, Billy Idol, and Slash. Corbijn couples the excesses of William S. Burroughs with the beauty of supermodels Naomi and Christy, and brings Salman Rushdie and Bono together in front of the camera.

In the 60s and 70s, Amsterdam was the epicentre of new cultural development and a magnet for national and international celebrities. Dutch photojournalists Hans Sabel and Henk Daniels were on site to capture all events and advancements. 30 years of photojournalism has resulted in an archive of around 150,000 negatives. In cooperation with the heirs of the archive a selection of images has been brought together in this book. It offers many previously unpublished images, from Jacques Brel, Martin Luther King, John Lennon, Charles Aznavour, Elizabeth Taylor and Dutch celebrities like Johan Cruyff, princess Beatrix and prince Bernhard to Willeke Alberti. Starring Amsterdam is a unique photographic document from Amsterdam at a time when the city is alive and buzzing like never before. With a foreword by James Worthy and text by Joost Bastmeijer. Still in publisher's shrinkwrap.

Hardcover. NY, Scalo, 1st, 1997, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover. Black & white photographs of glamorous movie stars, 335 pages. Mostly shot in Monte Carlo. This is one of the most gorgeous collections of classic B&W Hollywood pictures published in a long time. Actually, "Hollywood" isn't exactly accurate, as the late Edward Quinn did most of his work in Europe; most of the photos were taken at Cannes (including, of course, the Cannes Film Festival) or on the Riviera in the 1950's and early 1960's. The book is a huge hardbound with most of the photos in full-page format, and the publishers cleverly printed the captions on a separate pullout (in multiple languages, withal!) so as not to take space away from the pictures.

In recent years, with celebrities posing in the street and the studio being used for more informal, intimate shots, both traditions have undergone a transformation. This stunning collection features many of the greatest street hotographers of all time--Atget, Brassai, Cartier-Bresson, Arbus, Frank, as well as studio-based artists such as Carlo Ponti, Edward Steichen, Richard Avedon, Annie Leibovitz, and Jurgen Teller.
