Arrested
by: Lee, Jim and Peter York

Hardcover. East Sussex, Ammonite Press, 1sr, 2012, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, 286 pages, color photographs throughout. No dust jacket as issued. Large, heavy folio. Black cloth with cover label photo. "Arrested" is the biography of idiosyncratic London-based photographer and film director Jim Lee. Lee established a portfolio photographing bands such as the Kinks and the Who and later became in demand as a fashion photographer, notably working with "Vogue" editor-in-chief Anna Wintour. Lee's earlier photographic work is included in a permanent collection at the Victoria & Albert Museum. Born in 1945 to parents who were both MI5 operatives, Lee's life has followed anything but a conventional route. Dyslexia and an independent spirit saw Lee at the age of just seventeen emigrate to Australia where his passion for photography was kindled. Rescued from fighting in the Vietnam war by his parents' intervention, Lee returned to the UK and began to establish a portfolio photographing bands. As his reputation grew, Lee became in demand as a fashion photographer for magazines during the late sixties and seventies. He collaborated with some of the most influential fashion designers, including Yves St Laurent and Gianni Versace, and his work appeared in "Elle", "The Sunday Times Magazine", "Harpers & Queen" and "The New York Times".

Artists Unframed: Snapshots from the Smithsonian's Archives of American Art
by: Merry A. Foresta

Hardcover. NY, Princeton Architectural Press, 1st, 2015, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 160 pages. Tucked away among the letters, diaries, and other ephemera in the Smithsonian's archives lies a trove of rarely seen snapshots of some of the twentieth century's most celebrated artists. Unlike the familiar official portraits and genius-at-work shots, these humble snaps capture creative giants with their guard down, in the moment, living life. Pablo Picasso stands proudly on a balcony with young daughter Maya--a tiny, meticulously inked annotation penned by an unknown hand proclaims that "he's very much in love." Jackson Pollock morosely carves a turkey while his mother, Stella, and wife, Lee Krasner, look on. A young Andy Warhol clowns for the camera with college friend Philip Pearlstein, and in a later shot more closely resembles his famously enigmatic public self at a gallery opening with John Lennon and Yoko Ono.

August Sander: Masterpieces
by: Conrath-Scholl, Gabriele

Hardcover. Munich/NY, Prestel, 1st, 2019, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket, 304 pages. Featuring 60 subjects from August Sander's People of the 20th Century along with another 100 brilliant images from his large-scale project, this book presents a selection of the most stunning images from the photographer's monumental work. August Sander is one of the greatest photographers in international photographic history. With his seminal book People of the 20th Century, he set new standards in portrait photography. Sander's aspiration was to create a typological "composite image" of his time. The ambitious project began in the 1910s and was to occupy him through the 1950s. A novel feature of this book is that all the reproductions are based on vintage prints produced and authorized by August Sander himself. The croppings and the desired tonal values are authentically rendered here for the first time in the long publication history of Sander's brilliant portrait work. The originals are from the rich holdings of the Photographische Sammlung/SK Stiftung Kultur in Cologne and from additional major collections such as the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles, and the Pinakothek der Moderne in Munich. Like new in publisher's shrinkwrap. DOMESTIC SHIPPING ONLY.

Aura Rosenberg: Who Am I, What Am I, Where Am I?
by: Nicolas Guagnini (Author), Dan Graham (Author), Mike Kelley (Author), Aura Rosenberg (Photographer)

Hatje Cantz, 1st, 2009, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 200 pages. Celebrating the kind of childhood play that signals a search for identity, Who Am I, What Am I, Where Am I? is a series of 70 photographs by New York- and Berlin-based artist Aura Rosenberg. For each picture, a child and an artist were paired up to create an idiosyncratic portrait of the child--each of whom was given access to masks and costumes. Among the collaborating artists are John Baldessari, Coco Fusco, Skuta Helgason, Louise Lawler, Allan McCollum, John Miller, Vik Muniz, Tony Oursler, Jim Shaw, James Siena, Laurie Simmons, Kiki Smith and Haim Steinbach. Rosenberg's contribution to the collaboration is her technically playful style--the photographs are often digitally manipulated to create an array of surreal and humorous effects. This volume draws a compelling parallel between childhood play and the work of the adult artists. Also included are texts by artists Dan Graham, Mike Kelley and Nicolas Guagnini.

In the basement of an apartment building in Manhattan, Scott Zieher discovered a pile of photographs among the effects of a recently deceased tenant. These photographs, presented for the first time in Band of Bikers, offer an intimate portrait of a group of gay bikers in the city and the woods, and a touching snapshot of an entire generation at it's carefree zenith. Newly aware of muscle and biker magazines and their heavy-handed eroticism, photographer and photographed brimwith a subtly vibrant, chromatic pride. The photographs as a whole bring into focus a brief, specific period of relative innocence, when middle-of-the-road Americans more often than not failed to perceive the homoerotic undertones of their most heterosexual of institutions. With conceptual light cast by issues ranging from anonymity in homosexuality and underground motorcycle chic, to vernacular photography's pop-culture ramifications, a warm and generous spirit of camaraderie pervades this subterranean survey. Like a real-world set forScorpio Rising casually captured byan unpretentious extra, presented as Band of Bikers and accompanied by an essay by Zieher, this found cache of old-school, leather party snapshots attains archeological significance.

Beatific Soul: Jack Kerouac's On the Road
by: Gewirtz, Isaac

Hardcover. NY, Scala, 1st, 2007, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 208 pages. Jack Kerouac's novel On the Road was a touchstone for a generation and the centrepiece of the Beat movement in literature and art. This new book examines Kerouac's life and career, and accompanies a major exhibition at The New York Public Library to celebrate the 50th anniversary of On the Road's publication in 1957. Kerouac's achievement as both a literary and cultural figure is traced, including his innovations in narrative techniques and in character development. His counterculture vision is explored, showing his image as a seer and sage who wanted to save America from its obsession with consumerism, the inhibition of sexuality and other conventional bourgeois pieties. The author also explores Kerouac's relationships with Allen Ginsberg, William S. Burroughs and other Beats, as well as the Beat movement in general. The book is heavily illustrated, with material from the extensive Kerouac literary archive owned by The New York Public Library, including typescript drafts of On the Road.

Beautiful and the Damned: The Creation of Identity in Nineteenth-Century Photography
by: Hamilton/Roger Hargreaves, Peter

Hardcover. London, Lund Humphries, 1st, 2001, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 121 pages. The Beautiful and the Damned looks for the first time at the broad social and cultural context for the development of portrait photography in the nineteenth century, showing how social and celebrity portraiture on the one hand, and scientific photography on the other, were different facets of the nineteenth-century fascination with classification and ordering.Between 1860 and 1900, editions of celebrity portraits, as well as the vogue for the carte de visite, fuelled the fashion for collecting and classifying photographs of the face. In an age of rapid industrialisation and the growth of the middle classes, the carte de visite became a means of conferring social status, and family albums - which often incorporated photographs of royalty and public figures - were used to position family members within society at large
