During his lifetime Munby was known as a versifier of small but distinctive talents, a barrister concerned primarily with ecclesiastical affairs, and a fashionable bachelor about town. At his death in 1910, Munby bequeathed to Trinity College, Cambridge three deed boxes full of diaries and personal documents. It is largely on the contents of these boxes that this biography is based. For Munby had a lifelong obsession with the whole sub world of female manual workers - colliery women, fishergirls, milkwomen, acrobats- women whose company he furtively pursued, whose photographs he avidly collected, and one of whom, a char woman called Hannah, he secretly married & kept as his unacknowledged wife for a quarter of a century. Sir Peter Lely (1618-1680) was Charles II's Principal Painter and the outstanding artistic figure of Restoration England. When Lely arrived in England in the early 1640s his ambition was to be a painter of narrative scenes and not to work as a portraitist. However, the 'subject pictures' did not find favor with many English patrons and he produced less than thirty. As Lely's friend Richard Lovelace explained, all they wanted was "their own dull counterfeits" or portraits of their mistresses. Thus, Lely was obliged to turn to portraiture to make a living. Yet, his poetic pictures of figures in idyllic landscapes are among the most beautiful paintings made in 17th-century England and this catalog will be the first in-depth look at this important chapter of this major painter's career.

The nineteenth century was a period of technological change and of artistic innovation: both these strands came together in the development of porcelain, which industrialization brought within the reach of the burgeoning middle classes of industrial Europe. While early in the century Neoclassicism had brought about a new purity of line and decoration, in Germany and in England taste demanded more elaborate styles and resulted in the emergence of the 'new Rococo' and later in the development of revived styles of decoration such as Minton's 'Majolica' and the work of studio potters. This book covers not only the great factories, Sevres, Limoges, Copenhagen, Meissen, but also the smaller producers in Holland, Italy and Spain and extends to the birth of Art Nouveau.

Hardcover. Oxford, Oxford University Press, 1st, 1973, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Good, 193 pages, 8 color and 100 b&w plates. Examines the approach of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood and their associates to the natural world. It is the first serious examination of the consequences of the Pre-Raphaelite creed of 'exact truth to nature', which led to the ever increasing importance of natural detail in Pre-Raphaelite school of landscape painting. Following a discussion of the developing interest in the precise depiction of nature by the Pre-Raphaelites from 1848 to 1851, chapters on individual artists, many hitherto almost forgotten, trace the history of the Pre-Raphaelite landscape in the 1850s and 1860s and its relation to earlier and later art in England and abroad. Much new light is cast on Ruskin's central role as theorist, patron, and critic of mid Victorian art.

Richly illustrated with 172 illustrations, 50 in full color. First monograph of this American-born artist who has lived most of his life in England. Includes a catalogue of all his work up until 1985.R.B. Kitaj (1932-2007) is one of the most intriguing 20th century artists. Born into a Russo-Jewish family near Cleveland, Ohio, 17-year old Kitaj spent 5 years at sea aboard a Norwegian freighter. He went on to study art in New York and Vienna. A Royal College of Art stipend made him move to London where he became a celebrated artist. Curating The Human Clay, a 1976 show of figurative contemporary British artists, he coined the term "School of London" for the artistic circle around Francis Bacon, Frank Auerbach, Lucian Freud, and Leon Kossoff. In 1991 he was elected a member of the Royal Academy, one of only three American painters to be thus honored in the history of the institution. A major 1994 retrospective at London's Tate Gallery failed to produce Kitaj's international breakthrough, but was unanimously panned by British critics instead. This, and the unexpected death of his wife Sandra, induced his increasingly paranoid perspective. Embittered he returned to the USA and settled in Los Angeles, where he finally took his own life in 2007. Kitaj left behind a manuscript unmatched among 20th-century artist autobiographies -- Confessions of an Old Jewish Painter. Eloquently describing his vices and sufferings, it stands in the traditions of both St. Augustine and Thomas de Quincey. Now published for the first time, it is a sensation, from both a literary and art historical point of view.
Hardcover. NY, Taschen, reprint, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Hardcover, illustrated boards. "Silly Fool Comics" fills the final page in this sixth volume, with a devilish creature telling the anguished Crumb, "YOU Will Soon Be DEAD!" He was a mere 67, but in his self-absorbed Crumbish way was obsessing about death, when not making intimate and loving portraits of his wife Aline and all the other women who'd tormented his libido since boyhood. Most impressive in this book are his historic tableau, some single page, others multi-page strips, including Piers the Ploughman of 14th century England, My Secret Life by "Walter," Rough Women of the Dark Ages and The Apache Dance, from a 1930s Parisian postcard. His Rapidographed cross hatching is superb as ever and we are treated to long screeds displaying his undimmed brilliance at analyzing the human condition, in a morbid but nonetheless amusing way. One could say there are no surprises in content, as Crumb has produced a consistent body of work over the last 40, if not 50, years, yet each page is also jarringly different from the one before, due to his personal juxtaposition of images. So much is packed in you can spend an hour and find you're only a quarter of the way through, with Crumb bemoaning his mortality, while continuing to prosper, every few pages. A fine stand-alone volume, and must-have completion for the sketchbook set.

Hardcover. New York, State University of New York, 1st, 1967, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Good, Hardcover, 96 pages, illustrated throughout. Dust jacket edge wear and fade, minor rub, otherwise, very clean and tight copy. Here at long last is the study of the life and paintings of Ralph Earl, the colorful eighteenth-century American artist whose pictures hang in the great galleries but about whom relatively little has appeared in print. A pioneer landscapist in a day when portraiture was the vogue, a Tory in Revolutionary New England, he nevertheless captured the stance and spirit of the new nation in the first decades after the Revolution. He portrayed the merchants and civic leaders of the time, often with their families, in their homes, orchards, business establishments--and the result is a record of post-Revolutionary American dress, design, and decoration as well as face and figure. Professor Goodrich has tracked down and assembled forty-one of Earl's paintings for this book, providing the first opportunity of viewing the artist's work as a body. The pictures range from a youthful re-creation of the Battle of Concord, through portraits done in England (whence he fled during the Revolution and which enabled him to absorb the techniques of the great eighteenth-century English portraitists), to his invaluable paintings of General von Steuben, Mrs. Alexander Hamilton, and other figures in the young United States.
