Jean Strouse captures the dramas, mysteries, intrigues, and tragedies surrounding John Singer Sargent's portraits of the Wertheimer family. Her account looks at twelve portraits of one English family painted by the expatriate American artist at the height of his career...and at the intersections of all these lives with the sparkle and strife of the Edwardian age. In commissioning this grand series of paintings, Asher Wertheimer, an eminent London art dealer of German-Jewish descent, became Sargent's greatest private patron and close friend. The Wertheimers worked with Rothschilds and royals, plutocrats and dukes--as did Sargent. Asher left most of his Sargent portraits to the National Gallery in London, a gift that elicited censure as well as praise: it was a new thing for a family of Jews to appear alongside the Anglo-Saxon aristocrats and dignitaries painted by earlier masters. Strouse's account, set primarily in England around the turn of the twentieth century, takes in the declining fortunes of the British aristocracy and the dramatic rise of new power and wealth on both sides of the Atlantic. Clean, bright copy.

Ford Madox Brown had already pioneered a style of painting which came to be known as Pre-Raphaelite before the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood was founded in 1848. His beautifully observed landscapes anticipated the open-air effects of the Impressionists. His art was anti-academic, rejecting easy solutions, prettiness, and conventional Victorian formulae. He depicted children without sentimentality and poor people without condescension. This major monograph provides a general introduction to Brown's art based on new research; all of his important paintings are included, and each one is illustrated and described.

Softcover. Baltimore, Clearfield, reprint, 2000, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, light gray wrappers, 278 pages. This volume consists of abstracts of genealogical data from four of New York's earliest newspapers--the New-York Gazette (1726-1744) and the New-York Weekly Journal (1733-1751), the two earliest city papers, and the New-York Mercury and the Weekly Mercury (1752-1783). These newspapers were originally produced as weeklies and usually consisted of four pages, with occasional supplementary issues. Their subject matter encompassed essays, treatises, parliamentary proceedings, governors' messages, European and West Indian news, shipping news, incidents culled from other newspapers, and many advertisements. In this volume of abstracts may be found items yielding information concerning marriage, birth, death, age, status, place of residence, and place of origin, covering, in all, the years 1726 through most of 1783. Treatment is not confined to New York, for among individuals mentioned are those from all the other colonies, especially New Jersey (which had no newspaper in the colonial period), New England, Pennsylvania, and Maryland.

Many of the early settlers of Barbados eventually moved to the mainland of North America and settled in Virginia, Georgia, the Carolinas, and other colonies. Records of Barbados families exist in a variety of places and indeed a great many have been written up and published in the turn-of-the-century journal "Caribbeana" and "The Journal of the Barbados Museum and Historical Society". Unfortunately, back issues of these journals are no longer available, and copies can be found today in only a handful of libraries. With this present work, however, genealogists at last have access to both of these publications, for the book contains every article pertaining to family history ever published in these journals. The combined articles, reprinted here in facsimile, range from conventional genealogies and pedigrees to will abstracts and Bible records and refer to some 15,000 persons, all of whom are listed in the index. Besides the genealogies and family records, this compilation also contains a selection of notes on the connections between Barbados and New England families and four invaluable lists of Barbados Quakers.

George III enjoyed one of the longest reigns in English history (1760-1820) at a time when both England and the world were undergoing drastic changes. Yet he remains a dim figure, remembered mainly for his failures (losing America) and his "madness" (which turns out to have been not mental but physical). He was highly unpopular for much of his reign, and this judgment is spectacularly endorsed by hundreds of contemporary caricatures, many reproduced here for the first time. Among George's enemies were some of the wittiest artists of any age, and few took the trouble to be fair. This was the way the English nation saw its king, adding a new dimension to what is ultimately a tragic story. 200 color illustrations.

Georgia O'Keeffe is arguably the 20th century's leading woman artist. Coming of age along with American modernism, her life was rich in intense relationships -- with family, friends, and especially noted photographer Alfred Stieglitz. Her struggle between the rigorous demands of love and work resulted in extraordinary accomplishments. Her often-eroticized flowers, bones, stones, skulls, and pelvises became extremely well known to a broad American public. The New York Times Book Review named this richly detailed and moving biography a Notable Book of the Year. Clean, bright copy.

In 1947, Christian Dior?s ?New Look? was greeted with both shock and delight, making headlines around the world. Accompanying the exhibition opening at the Victoria and Albert Museum in September 2007, this lavish book focuses on Parisian and British couture between 1947 and 1957, the decade Dior hailed as fashion?s ?golden age.? The ?New Look? symbolized a new femininity. The full skirts and hourglass silhouettes were considered highly decadent, synonymous with luxury and prosperity, in marked contrast to the austerity of the WWII years. Nevertheless, the ?New Look? caught the public imagination and ushered in a period of remarkable creativity. The Golden Age of Couture features stunning gowns and exquisite tailoring from Dior as well as from such designers as Balenciaga, Balmain, and Givenchy, along with evocative photographs by the likes of Richard Avedon and Cecil Beaton.
