John Evelyn's Elysium Britannicum and European Gardening
by: O'Malley, Therese & Joachim Wolschke-Bulmahn (Eds.)

Hardcover. Washington DC, Dumbarton Oaks Research Library, 1st, 1998, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket, 310 pages. John Evelyn (1620-1706), an English virtuoso and writer, was a pivotal figure in seventeenth-century intellectual life in England. He left an immensely rich literary heritage, which is of great significance for scholars interested in garden history and the histories of intellectual life and architecture. Evelyn is perhaps best known for Sylva, a compilation of thoughts on practical estate management, gardening, and philosophy, and the first book published by the Royal Society in London. As one of the group of learned men who founded the Royal Society in 1660 to promote scientific research, discussion, and publications, John Evelyn was at the center of many of the vital intellectual currents of the time. "Elysium Britannicum," Evelyn's unpublished manuscript of almost a thousand pages of densely packed drafts, rewrites, and projects, was perhaps something of an enigma to his contemporaries, who nevertheless urged its publication. It remains for scholars today a treasure-trove of fascinating insights on Evelyn and his milieu. Clean copy.

Kenwood: Paintings in the Iveagh Bequest
by: Bryant, Julius

Hardcover. Swindon, English Heritage, 1st, 2012, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 434 pages, illustrated throughout in color and b&w. Clean, unmarked copy with only minor wear to dust jacket. The Iveagh Bequest at Kenwood House in Hampstead, London, is one of the world's great private art collections assembled by an individual. In quality it challenges the Frick collection in New York, with whose eponymous collector Iveagh was in competition for acquisitions during the great age of the industrial barons on both sides of the Atlantic, and the Wallace collection in London. They all saw collecting great art - much as the oligarchs of today - as ultimate status symbols.

London Calling:Bacon, Freud, Kossoff, Andrews, Auerbach, and Kitaj
by: Crippa, Elena, Lampert, Catherine

Hardcover. Loa Angeles, J. Paul Getty Museum, 1st, 2016, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Hardcover, 136 pages. Offering a fresh account of developments that have since characterized postwar British painting, this catalogue focuses on Michael Andrews, Frank Auerbach, Francis Bacon, Lucian Freud, R. B. Kitaj, and Leon Kossoff-- artists who worked in close proximity as they were developing new forms of realism. If for many years their efforts seemed to clash with dominant tendencies, reassessment in recent decades has afforded their work a central position in a richer and more complex understanding of postwar British art and culture. Rigorous and gorgeously illustrated, the essays reflect on the parallel yet diverse trajectories of these artists, their friendships and mutual admiration, and the divergence of their practice from the discourse of high modernism. The authors seek to dispel the notion of their work as a uniquely British endeavor by highlighting the artists' international outlook and ongoing dialogue with contemporary European and American painters as well as masters from previous generations.

London Couture and the Making of a Fashion Centre
by: Michelle Jones

Hardcover. Cambridge MA, MIT Press , 1st, 2022, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket, 311 pages, b&w illustrations. In the 1930s and 1940s, English fashion houses, spurred by economic and wartime crises, put London on the map as a major fashion city. In this book, Michelle Jones examines the creation of a London-based couture industry during these years, exploring how designer collaboration and the construction of specific networks and narratives supported and shaped the English fashion economy. Haute couture-the practice of creative made-to-measure womenswear-was widely regarded as inherently French. Jones shows how an English version emerged during a period of economic turbulence, when a group of designers banded together in a collective effort to shift power within the international fashion system. Clean, bright copy.

Loring W. Coleman: Living and Painting in a Changing New England
by: Loring Colemam/Hugh Fortmiller (Editor), Henry Adams (Foreword)

Hardcover. Hudson Hills, 1st, 2011, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket, 240 pages, color illustrations. Loring Coleman's voice as a storyteller is full of his humor and sense of wonder as he tells us about his life and then gives us the tales behind the beauty and mystery of over 50 of his paintings, most of which are reflections of a disappearing life in New England. He begins by describing the moment when his eyesight failed, and he learned that after seven decades as an artist, he might never paint again. His creation of this book became his response. With spirited memories of the intriguing characters who affected his life, Loring describes his upbringing in the tough Chicago of the 1930s, his discovery of idyllic rivers in Concord, Massachusetts, and his adventures as a motorcyclist and young student of great art teachers. He tells of marrying his wife Katinka the day before Pearl Harbor, entering the military, and quickly finding himself commanding the U.S. Army's largest World War II art department. He then traces his energetic years as a teacher, traveling art historian, and lover of Bavaria and Austria. In the context of his rich personal life, Loring shows us his paintings, as he reveals the many amusing, exasperating, and provocative experiences surrounding the artistic choices he made as he became one of New England's most revered artists. Lucian Freud: Eyes Wide Open
by: Hoban, Phoebe

Hardcover. Boston, New Harvest, 1st, 2014, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, 174 pages. Hardcover. Clean, unmarked copy with only minor wear to dust jacket. Hoban has written an insightful book into what may have made Lucian Freud the great painter he came to be. From his early days in Germany with his grandfather, Sigmund Freud, to his subsequent life in London, where his family moved before the war, we see Lucian Freud gradually developing from an intense adolescent who often resorted to physical violence in conflicts with others to the powerful figure who changed the face of Realism. His many liaisons with women are described in detail: Hoban offers us a candid sketch of who the most prominent women in his life were, his problems with commitment and other moral conundrums we are forced to consider in his character, such as his questionable demand on his lovers that they use no form of birth control, resulting in at least 14 children, most out of wedlock. Along with that, Freud's gambling addiction and his love of risk are explored by Hoban in a way that allows us a glimpse into Freud's psyche that is invaluable for anyone wanting to understand in a more in depth way the factors that might have contributed to his enormous talents and output.

Mariko Mori : Oneness
by: Mori, Mariko

Hardcover. Ostfildern, Hatje Cantz, 1st, 2007, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Hardcover in a white cardboard slipcase, 352 pages. One of the best-known Japanese artists of the international scene, Mariko Mori, born in 1967 in Tokyo, envisions fantastical worlds and beings in spectacular photographs and videos--frequently casting herself amid these scenarios as a Bjork-esque avatar in biomorphic and technological symbiosis. Mori studied fashion design in Tokyo, worked briefly as a model and later studied fine art in England, and this early education is visible in her elaborately produced photographs, videos and sculpture that are as reminiscent of Hollywood as they are of contemporary art. Her recent work involves exotic landscapes, computer-generated images and choreographed performances for which the artist designs her own costumes and plays the central characters. This extraordinary and substantial publication offers a retrospective of Mori's entire oeuvre, and is the first to present the complete Beginning of the End: Past, Present, Future, a photographic cycle produced over a period of 11 years, in which Mori presents herself as a time traveler in a plexiglass capsule at significant symbolic locations, from Giza to New York to Shanghai.

Modern Times: British Prints, 1913-1939
by: Farrell, Jennifer

Hardcover. NY, Metropolitan Museum of Art, 1st, 2021, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Hardcover, pictorial boards, 200 pages. A look at the artistic and technical innovation of British printmaking from World War I to the eve of World War II, as artists from the Grosvenor School and beyond harnessed an emerging modernist style. This richly illustrated volume reintroduces rare print works from the collection of Leslie and Johanna Garfield into the narrative of modernism, demonstrating their relationship to other movements such as Cubism, Futurism, and Constructivism. Essays explore how artists turned to printmaking to alleviate trauma, memorialize their wartime experiences, and capture the aspirations and fears of the twenties and thirties. Special attention is given to the linocut technique revolutionized by Claude Flight and his students at London's Grosvenor School of Modern Art. Highlighted as well are the pioneering works of artists such as C. R. W. Nevinson, Sybil Andrews, Cyril E. Power, Paul Nash, Edward Wadsworth, Edith Lawrence, Ursula Fookes, and Lill Tschudi. In their quest to promote a more democratic art, these artists created innovative graphics that portrayed in subject, form, material, and technique the dynamic era in which they lived.
