Grand Hotels of the Jazz Age: The Architecture of Schultze & Weaver
by: Marianne Lamonaca

Hardcover. Princeton Architectural Press, 1st, 2006, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 256 pages. The Breakers, the Waldorf, the Biltmore, the Sherry, the Pierre--these landmark hotels are synonymous with grand luxury and style. When they were built, in the 1920s, their refined elegance and grandeur set the bar for hotels and resorts the world over. Responsible for creating these and countless other hotels throughout the United States, were the partners of a single architectural firm: Schultze & Weaver. Together, this duo--an architect and an engineer--virtually invented the glamorous lifestyle made famous in films like Grand Hotel. Catering to the social elite of which they were themselves a part, Schultze & Weaver synthesized the Old World style of Renaissance Italy, Moorish Spain, and Georgian England with all of the modern amenities that made hotel living luxurious. This book presents portfolios of fifteen of the firm's most spectacular hotels, culminating in the Art Moderne masterpiece of the Waldorf-Astoria. Over two hundred period photographs and hand-colored architectural renderings chart the ascent of the American hotel in all its glory and glamour, before the Great Depression forever changed the lifestyles of America's rich and famous. Essays address the cultural and technological developments that underpin the creation of resort and residential hotels, including the elemental role played by Schultze & Weaver.

Hal Foster's Tarzan: The Complete Sunday Comics 1931 - 1937
by: Hal Foster / Dian Hanson (Ed.)

Hardcover. NY, Taschen, 1st, 2026, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Hardcover, large format in pictorial boards, 392 pages in color. In 1928 commercial artist Hal Foster took a job to turn Edgar Rice Burroughs' novel Tarzan of the Apes into a 60-installment black and white newspaper comic. Initially, no American papers wanted it, so it premiered in England, to great acclaim. When U.S. papers picked it up and wanted more, Foster wasn't interested. It was only in 1931, with the Great Depression threatening his family with starvation, that he consented to take it on as a full color, full page Sunday comic, still calling the low-paid job "a bit of pottage." That bit of pottage fed him for the next seven years, as Tarzan became the first adventure comic, and one of the most beloved Sunday strips in America. From 1931 to 1937, 292 full-page Tarzan Sunday comics followed. Foster's ape man defined Tarzan and adventure comics for decades to come. This volume reprints every comic from the original newspapers, in a colorful XXL format. Clean copy. This is a heavy and oversized book and will require extra shipping. His painting also crossed boundaries including elements of Impressionism, Post-Impressionism & Tonalism. Perhaps it was this refusal to sit in one box that accounts for his being so nearly forgotten. There are many lovely pictures here, mostly of St Ives & the coasts of New England.

How the Heather Looks: A Joyous Journey to the British Sources of Children's Books (INSCRIBED BY AUTHOR)
by: Bodger, Joan

Hardcover. NY, The Viking Press, 1st, 1965, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a lightly soiled dust jacket, 276 pages with index. INSCRIBED BY BODGER on the front fly leaf. Over fifty years ago, Joan Bodger, her husband, and two children went to Britain on a special literary quest. They were seeking the world that they knew and loved through children's books. In Winnie-the-Pooh Country, Mrs. Milne showed them the way to that enchanted place on the top of the Forest [where] a little boy and his Bear will always be playing. In Edinburgh they stood outside Robert Louis Stevenson's childhood home, tilting their heads to talk to a lamplighter who was doing his job. In the Lake District they visited Jemima Puddle-Duck's farm, and Joan sought out crusty Arthur Ransome to talk to him about Swallows and Amazons. They spent several days messing about in boats on the River Thames, looking for Toad Hall and other places described by Kenneth Grahame in The Wind in the Willows. Mud and flood kept them from attaining the slopes of Pooks Hill (on Rudyard Kiplings farm), but they scaled the heights of Tintagel.

Hume and the Heroic Portrait: Studies in Eighteenth-Century Imagery
by: Wind, Edgar / Edited By Jaynie Anderson

Hardcover. Oxford UK, Clarendon Press, 1st, 1986, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a very good dust jacket with light fading to dj spine. 139 pages of text, 124 b&w plates in rear section. This is the second volume of Edgar Wind's selected papers, a companion to The Elegance of Symbols. Of all the scholars associated with the early development of the Warbur Institute Edgar Wind was the first to apply different theoretical principles to the study of English Art, above all in his early study of English portraiture, now a classic art history text. As the seminal essay, it gives title to the present volume, and is here translated into English for the first time. In this essay, which marked a change of direction in Wind's own development, he argues that two opposing styles of portraiture, exemplified in the art of Gainsborough and Reynolds, can be related to the different notions of humanity subscribed to by the philosophers David Hume and James Beattie. Other important studies, also reprinted here, make this volume an excellent resource to Wind's tremendous contributions to art history. Clean copy.

Imagining New England: Explorations of Regional Identity from the Pilgrims to the Mid-Twentieth Century
by: Joseph A. Conforti

Hardcover. Chapel Hill NC, University of North Carolina Press, 1st, 2001, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Hardcover, blue cloth covers with silver lettering, 384 pages, b&w illustrations. Say "New England" and you likely conjure up an image in the mind of your listener: the snowy woods or stone wall of a Robert Frost poem, perhaps, or that quintessential icon of the region--the idyllic white village. Such images remind us that, as Joseph Conforti notes, a region is not just a territory on the ground. It is also a place in the imagination. This ambitious work investigates New England as a cultural invention, tracing the region's changing identity across more than three centuries. Incorporating insights from history, literature, art, material culture, and geography, it shows how succeeding generations of New Englanders created and broadcast a powerful collective identity for their region through narratives about its past. Whether these stories were told in the writings of Frost or Harriet Beecher Stowe, enacted in historical pageants or at colonial revival museums, or conveyed in the pages of a geography textbook or Yankee magazine, New Englanders used them to sustain their identity, revising them as needed to respond to the shifting regional landscape. Clean copy. No dust jacket.

Hardcover. New York, Abrams, 1st, 2016, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, 288 pages. Hardcover with dust jacket. Very clean, like new in publishers shrink-wrap. A tight copy. Inge Morath: On Style reveals the vital forms of fashion and self-expression that blossomed into existence in England, France, and the United States in the postwar decades. The book follows the photojournalist Inge Morath (1923-2002) through intimate sessions with Ingrid Bergman and Audrey Hepburn; scenes of window-shopping on Fifth Avenue; American girls discovering Paris; the frenetic splendor of society balls; and working women--from actresses to seamstresses to writers--everywhere taking their place in the world. The photographs in On Style focus on an extraordinary period of Morath's creativity, from the early 1950s to mid- 1960s, with a coda of work from later years. Here are the fundamental humanism, joy, and unerring eye for life's brilliant theatricality that characterized her work and made her one of the most celebrated photographers of her time.
