Paul Klee: Theater Everywhere
by: Klee, Paul, Editor: Klee, Zentrum Paul

Hardcover. Ostfildern GR, Hatje Cantz, 1st, 2008, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket, 279 pages, illustrated in color and b&w. The work of Paul Klee (1879-1940) was deeply influenced by his passion for the theater. Throughout his life, the artist fervently attended theatrical performances, from the opera to puppet shows. Characters from plays or operas Hamlet, Falstaff, or Don Giovanni, for example populate his cryptic visual world. Various types of characters or theatrical elements, such as the clown or the mask, were firmly established themes in his pictorial repertoire. However, Klee primarily forged links between the theater and life, and in so doing, he took up the traditional theme of the world as a stage: people became actors or marionettes; theatrical events converged with scenes from everyday life. This publication sheds light on all of these aspects of Klee's captivation with the stage. A chronology reconstructs a panoramic view of his multifaceted experience with the theater. Selected works by contemporary artists make it clear that not only Klee was fascinated by the sharp-eyed perception of theatrical situations it is a topic that continues to engage artists even today. 394 plates, 212 in color. Peter Beard
by: Nejma Beard, Peter Beard , et al.

Hardcover. Taschen, 1st revised, 2013, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Hardcover, 706 pages. Photographer, collector, diarist, and writer of books Peter Beard has fashioned his life into a work of art; the illustrated diaries he kept from a young age evolved into a serious career as an artist and earned him a central position in the international art world. He was painted by Francis Bacon and painted on by Salvador Dali, he made diaries with Andy Warhol and toured with Truman Capote and the Rolling Stones--all of whom are brought to life, literally and figuratively, in his work. As a fashion photographer, he took Vogue stars like Veruschka to Africa and brought new ones--most notably Iman--back to the U.S. with him. After spending time in Kenya and striking up a friendship with the author Isak Dinesen (Karen Blixen) in the early 1960s, Beard bought a piece of land near hers. He witnessed the dawn of Kenya's population explosion, which challenged finite resources and stressed animal populations--including the starving elephants of Tsavo dying by the tens of thousands in a wasteland of eaten trees. So he documented what he saw--with diaries, photographs, and collages. He went against the wind in publishing unique and sometimes shocking books of these works. The corpses were laid bare; the facts carefully recorded, sometimes in type and often by hand. Beard uses his photographs as a canvas onto which he superimposes multi-layered contact sheets, ephemera, found objects, newspaper clippings that are elaborately embellished with meticulous handwriting, old-master inspired drawings and often swaths of animal blood used as paint. This is a heavy and oversized book and will require extra shipping. International customers please ask for a shipping quote before purchasing.

Peter Blake: Retrospective
by: Grunenberg , Christoph

Softcover. London, Tate Gallery, 1st, 2007, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, 216 pages. A key figure in the history of British Pop Art, Blake is one of the most influential and original artists working in Britain today. Central to Blake's work since the 1950s has been his fascination with popular culture, ranging from music to Hollywood icons and wrestling stars. Perhaps his most famous engagement with Pop came with his design for the cover of The Beatles' album Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. With this and other works he helped create a specifically British pop aesthetic that defined an era. A prolific artist, he has utilised a variety of media including painting, drawing, collage, sculpture and printmaking; this study focuses principally on his two-dimensional works and provides the first thorough survey of his paintings from the 1950s through to the present. It will include major icons of twentieth-century art, such as Self-Portrait with badges (1961), and Have a Nice Day, Mr Hockney (1981-3), but will also feature many lesser-known works including his recent, major work The Marcel Duchamp World Series.

Peter Keetman: Volkswagenwerk 1953
by: Keetman, Peter (Photographer)

Hardcover. Kerber, 1st, 2004, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 176 pages. In 1953, Peter Keetman spent a week at the Volkswagen plant in Wolfsburg. The result was a series of exceptionally clear, almost abstractly detailed photographs that document the entire production process of the VW Beetle. Storage stacks of shiny metal bumpers look like so many Modernist sculptures; car bodies hovering above the assembly line retrospectively form a surreal Pop art montage. This oversize publication reproduces the Volkswagenwerk series in full, in their original size, together with texts that refer both to this series and to Keetman's greater oeuvre. Keetman was known throughout his career as photographer of systemically conceived picture series on themes that included close-ups of water and oil drops, a style of working he developed as a member of Fotoform. Fotoform, a German movement of the 1950s of which Keetman was a primary proponent, was critical in the development of German photography as it is today: the group's "subjective photography" combined scientific objectivity with abstraction. Phil Frost
by: Pushead, Carlo McCormick, et al.

Hardcover. Damiani, 1st, 2008, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Hardcover, 162 pages. Part of a whole gang of street artists--from Barry McGee to Swoon--who have broken into the art world in the last decade or so, Phil Frost's signature style is a funky tribalism--Hawaii by way of New York City--infused with a quirky sense of art history and design. In the 1990s, Frost honed his skills by painting walls, found objects and street detritus with his intricate, compulsive and highly evolved form of tagging. Frost's gallery exhibitions are crowded affairs, filled with wildly patterned totemic objects and baseball bats while the walls are stacked with colorful mixed media paintings. He crafts his painstaking paintings by collaging layers of found imagery on grounds of symmetrical black-and-white patterning, which he paints with correction fluid, and that often morph into language-like glyphs or symbols. Frost states, "I believe [my work] is indigenous to myself. I believe that within every person there is an indigenous expression of themselves." Including an essay by New York journalist Carlo McCormick and notorious lowbrow artist Pusshead, this is Frost's first monograph, and an invaluable introduction to the evolution of his style.

by: Roanne Bell and Mark Sinclair

Softcover. New Haven CT, Yale University Press, 1st, 2005, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, 144 pages. Comics, graphic novels, and single panel cartoons have long flourished as an alternative medium. In recent years these forms of narrative illustration-artwork that tells its own story rather than supporting a text-have increasingly crossed over into mainstream popular culture. Pictorial storytelling now reaches the public through animated films (Spirited Away) and films with animated sequences (Kill Bill), while graphic novels win literary prizes and comic art hangs in art galleries. This delightful book explores the various uses of images with and without text in the work of over thirty artists from around the world.

Pop Art Portraits
by: Paul Moorhouse and Dominic Sandbrook

Hardcover. New Haven CT, Yale University Press, 1st, 2008, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 192 pages. Reaching its pinnacle during the era of Marilyn Monroe and James Bond, Haight-Ashbury and Swinging London, Pop art reflected the ideals and aspirations of a generation. By the 1960s the movement's bold imagery and style had become inseparable from the new consumer culture. This important book looks at British and American Pop art through the lens of portraiture, providing a fresh perspective on the movement and its innovative artists. Blurring the boundaries between "high" and "low" culture, Pop artists including Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, Richard Hamilton, and Peter Blake elevated portraiture to a new position. Author Paul Moorhouse explores the artists' engagement with portraits; their shared fascination with fame; their use of images from advertisements, rock music, films, and print sources; and the ways in which the British and American schools of Pop evolved and influenced one another. Bringing together key works from the peak years of Pop, this extensively illustrated book demonstrates how the conventions of portraiture were redefined as Pop artists transformed familiar images into transcendent works of art.

Softcover. NY, Museum of Modern Art, 1st, 1999, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, 136 pages. From the early 1960s through the early 70s, Pop Art swept the industrialized world. Encouraged by galleries and publishers who catered to a new collectors' market, many Pop artists were drawn to the creation of editions on paper and in multiples. 60 vibrant examples by such American icons as Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein, and by such European artists as Richard Hamilton, Niki de Saint Phalle, Gerhard Richter, Eduardo Paolozzi, and Sigmar Polke, are organized according to the themes of mass media consumer culture, politics, erotica and more.
