Kurtzman's groundbreaking "realistic" war comics of the early '50s and various satirical publications (MAD, Trump, Humbug, and Help!) had an immense impact on popular culture, inspiring a generation of underground cartoonists. Without Kurtzman, it's unlikely we'd have had Airplane, SNL, or National Lampoon. The Art of Harvey Kurtzman is the first and only authorized celebration of this "Master of American Comics." This definitive book includes hundreds of never-before-seen illustrations, paintings, pencil sketches, newly discovered lost E.C. One of America's most innovative artists, Romare Bearden (1911-1988) made colorful and passionate images that reflected his life in a time of creative ferment. His influences ranged from the old masters to African art, as well as the world around him: popular religion and ritual, jazz clubs and brothels, the history and literature of his time, and the places he lived (the rural South, Pittsburgh and Harlem, the Caribbean island of St. Martin). The resulting images are fresh and evocative, filled with quirky details and rhythmic forms. This authoritative and beautiful book, which accompanies a major retrospective opening at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., provides a provocative and absorbing look at a beloved artist. It offers new scholarly perspectives that address the aesthetic sophistication and modernity of the literary poster; the impact of early experiments in the field of advertising psychology; the expanded opportunities for women artists, who played an important role in advancing the so-called poster style; and the printmaking techniques that artists employed in this novel art form. Teen outcast Andy is an orphaned nobody with only one friend, the obnoxious-but loyal-Louie. They roam school halls and city streets, invisible to everyone but bullies and tormentors, until the glorious day when Andy takes his first puff on a cigarette. That night he wakes, heart pounding, soaked in sweat, and finds himself suddenly overcome with the peculiar notion that he can do anything. Indeed, he can, and as he learns the extent of his new powers, he discovers a terrible and seductive gadget-a hideous compliment to his seething rage-that forever changes everything. The Death-Ray utilizes the classic staples of the superhero genre-origin, costume, ray gun, sidekick, fight scene-and reconfigures them in a story that is anything but morally simplistic. With subtle comedy, deft mastery, and an obvious affection for the bold pop-art exuberance of comic book design, Daniel Clowes delivers a contemporary meditation on the darkness of the human psyche. Originally published as a paperback in Eightball #23 in 2004, here beautifully reproduced on heavy stock with new end paper illustrations and a new cover.

Liz Jobey's brief but illuminating introduction brings cohesion to thie fab book of photos of EMI pop and rock musicians of the late 1950's and the 1960's. It's EMI, and only EMI, but considering the artists who once signed with this British label, including the Beatles, Little Richard, David Bowie, Jeff Beck Group, Rod Stewart, Pretty Things, Pink Floyd, Steppenwolf, (Sir) Cliff Richards, Three Dog Night, Chubbie Checkers, Spencer Davis Group, the Yardbirds--EMI's talent pool was as rich as any label. The most only obvious omissions among the Brits (i.e., EMI never signed them) would probably be the Stones, the Who, and the Kinks. The photographs are enjoyable as kitsch, as a window into period fashion and sensibilities, and, occasionally, as great photography.
