Mozart: A Cultural Biography
by: Robert W. Gutman

Softcover. San Diego, Harcourt Brace,, reprint, 2000, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, 839 pages, contains two glossy black and white plates sections. This major work, the result of years of careful study and analysis, places Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's life and music in the context of the intellectual, political and artistic currents of eighteenth-century Europe. The result is a fresh interpretation of Mozart's genius, as Robert Gutman shows the great composer in a new light. With an informed and sensitive handling, Mozart emerges as an affectionate and generous man with family and friends, self-deprecating, witty, and winsome but also an austere moralist, incisive and purposeful. The major genres in which Mozart worked-chamber music, liturgical, theater and keyboard compositions, concertos, operas, symphonies, and oratorios-are unfolded to reveal a man of luminous intellect. Mozart is an extraordinary portrait of a man and his times and a brilliant distillation of musical thought.

Munby: Man of Two Worlds-the Life and Diaries of Arthur J Munby, 1828-1910
by: Derek Hudson and Arthur Joseph Munby

Hardcover. Boston, Gambit, 1st, 1972, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Hardcover, yellow cloth with blue and gilt stamping, 461 pages. This biography disclosed for the first time one of the strangest love stories of the Victorian age, as recorded one of the most remarkable private diaries of the 19th century. During his lifetime Munby was known as a versifier of small but distinctive talents, a barrister concerned primarily with ecclesiastical affairs, and a fashionable bachelor about town. At his death in 1910, Munby bequeathed to Trinity College, Cambridge three deed boxes full of diaries and personal documents. It is largely on the contents of these boxes that this biography is based. For Munby had a lifelong obsession with the whole sub world of female manual workers - colliery women, fishergirls, milkwomen, acrobats- women whose company he furtively pursued, whose photographs he avidly collected, and one of whom, a char woman called Hannah, he secretly married & kept as his unacknowledged wife for a quarter of a century. Mussolini
by: R. J. B. Bosworth

Softcover. NY, Bloomsbury, reprint, 2010, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover in pictorial wrappers, 509 pages, b&w illustrations. In 1945, disguised in German greatcoat and helmet, Mussolini attempted to escape from the advancing Allied armies. Unfortunately for him, the convoy of which he was part was stopped by partisans and his features, made so familiar by Fascist propaganda, gave him away. Within 24 hours he was executed by his captors, joining those he sent early to their graves as an outcome of his tyranny, at least one million people. Bosworth's Mussolini allows us to come closer than ever before to an appreciation of the life and actions of the man and of the political world and society within which he operated. With extraordinary skill and vividness, drawing on a huge range of sources, this biography paints a picture of brutality and failure, yet one tempered with an understanding of Mussolini as a human being, not so different from many of his contemporaries. My Brother's Keeper: James Joyce's Early Years
by: Stanislaus Joyce

Hardcover. NY, Viking Press, 1st US, 1958, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Good, Hardcover in a lightly worn, unclipped dust jacket, 266 pages. Stanislaus Joyce was more than his brother's keeper. He was at various times his brother's co-dependent, touchstone, conscience, and biggest fan. The two shared the same genius, the same childhood influences, and had the same literary instinct, but in Stanislaus it was channeled into sober academic pursuit, while in James it evolved into gaiety, wild whimsy, and at times sodden despair. Covering the first twenty-two years of James Joyce's life in Dublin and Trieste, My Brother's Keeper is a window onto the drama that was his youth. Thanks to Stanislaus's superb memory and sure hand, here we find the Dublin of the streets, neighbors, churches, and unforgettable eccentrics.

My Dark Places: An L.A. Crime Memoir (SIGNED COPY)
by: Ellroy, James

Hardcover. NY, Knopf, 1st, 1996, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright, unclipped dust jacket. INITIALED BY ELLROY on blank prelim page. In 1958 Jean Ellroy was murdered, her body dumped on a roadway in a seedy L.A. suburb. Her killer was never found, and the police dismissed her as a casualty of a cheap Saturday night. James Ellroy was ten when his mother died, and he spent the next thirty-six years running from her ghost and attempting to exorcize it through crime fiction. In 1994, Ellroy quit running. He went back to L.A., to find out the truth about his mother - and himself. In MY DARK PLACES, our most uncompromising crime writer - author of AMERICAN TABLOID and WHITE JAZZ - tells what happened when he teamed up with a brilliant homicide cop to investigate a murder that everyone else had forgotten - and to reclaim the mother he had despised, desired, but never dared to love. What ensues is an epic of loss, fixation, and redemption, a memoir that is also a history of the American way of violence.

MY DEAR MR. HOPPER
by: Hilsdale, Alta

Hardcover. New Haven, Yale University Press, 1st , 2013, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, 95 pages. Hardcover with dust jacket. Color and b&w illustrations throughout. Clean, unmarked copy with only minor wear to dust jacket. "Edward Hopper (1882-1967), long recognized as the premier 20th-century American realist painter, was famously introverted and reclusive. He rarely spoke about his personal life, and his close friends were few and love interests fewer. Until now, there have been only two known romantic pursuits prior to Hopper's marriage to Josephine Nivison in 1924: a brief relationship in Paris with an English girl in 1906-7 and another spanning several years with an older French woman beginning in New York in 1915. The discovery of fifty-eight previously unknown letters and one note from Alta Hilsdale (1884-1948) to Hopper brings to light a previously unknown romantic relationship. Hilsdale, who was from Minnesota and spent time in New York and Paris, sent letters to Hopper at various home and studio addresses during the course of ten years. Reverend Arthayer Sanborn, a close friend of Edward and Josephine Hopper, discovered the letters in Hopper's childhood home in Nyack, New York, after the artist's death. Fewer than ten people have had the opportunity to read these letters, and they are published in their entirety for the first time."

My Heart Is a Large Kingdom: Selected Letters of Margaret Fuller
by: Robert N. Hudspeth (Editor)

Hardcover. Ithaca NY, Cornell University Press, 1st, 2001, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket, 336 pages. This single-volume selection of the letters of Margaret Fuller affords a unique opportunity for renewed acquaintance with a great American thinker of the Transcendentalist circle. The letters represent Fuller at all stages of her life and career, and show her engaged as literary critic, as translator and as champion of German literature and thought, as teacher, as travel writer, as literary editor, as journalist, as feminist, as revolutionary, as wife and mother. My Heart Is a Large Kingdom, unlike previous collections, includes only letters transcribed from Fuller's manuscripts and does not reproduce correspondence known only from printed sources and copies in hands other than Fuller's. Among the recipients of the letters in this generous selection are such literary and cultural figures as Bronson Alcott, Elizabeth Barrett Browning, Arthur Hugh Clough, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Giuseppe Mazzini, Giovanni Angelo Ossoli (Fuller's husband), George Ripley, and Henry David Thoreau. Taken together, the letters serve as a chronicle of Fuller's lifetime and provide glimpses into her thoughts and feelings during the years of the "Conversations," Dial, and the revolution in Rome. My Last Sigh: The Autobiography of Luis Bunuel
by: Bunuel, Luis

Softcover. NY, Vintage, reprint, 1984, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, 256 pages, b&w photos. Clean copy. A provocative memoir from Luis Bunuel, the Academy Award winning creator of some of modern cinema's most important films, from Un Chien Andalou to The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie. Luis Bunuel's films have the power to shock, inspire, and reinvent our world. Now, in a memoir that carries all the surrealism and subversion of his cinema, Bunuel turns his artistic gaze inward. In swift and generous prose, Bunuel traces the surprising contours of his life, from the Good Friday drumbeats of his childhood to the dreams that inspired his most famous films to his turbulent friendships with Federico Garcia Lorca and Salvador Dali. His personal narratives also encompass the pressing political issues of his time, many of which still haunt us today--the specter of fascism, the culture wars, the nuclear bomb. Filled with film trivia, framed by Bunuel's intellect and wit, this is essential reading for fans of cinema and for anyone who has ever wanted to see the world through a surrealist's eyes.
