In this analysis of three generations of women in a Chinese silk factory, Lisa Rofel brilliantly interweaves the intimate details of her observations with a broad-ranging critique of the meaning of modernity in a postmodern age.The author based her study at a silk factory in the city of Hangzhou in eastern China. She compares the lives of three generations of women workers: those who entered the factory right around the Communist revolution in 1949, those who were youths during the Cultural Revolution of the 1970s, and those who have come of age in the Deng era. Exploring attitudes toward work, marriage, society, and culture, she convincingly connects the changing meanings of the modern in official discourse to the stories women tell about themselves and what they make of their lives. Hardcover. Princeton NJ, Princeton University Press, 1st, 2015, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket, 354 pages. From the turn of the fifth century to the beginning of the eighteenth, Christian writers were fascinated and troubled by the "Problem of Paganism," which this book identifies and examines for the first time. How could the wisdom and virtue of the great thinkers of antiquity be reconciled with the fact that they were pagans and, many thought, damned? Related questions were raised by encounters with contemporary pagans in northern Europe, Mongolia, and, later, America and China. Pagans and Philosophers explores how writers-philosophers and theologians, but also poets such as Dante, Chaucer, and Langland, and travelers such as Las Casas and Ricci-tackled the Problem of Paganism. Augustine and Boethius set its terms, while Peter Abelard and John of Salisbury were important early advocates of pagan wisdom and virtue. University theologians such as Aquinas, Scotus, Ockham, and Bradwardine, and later thinkers such as Ficino, Valla, More, Bayle, and Leibniz, explored the difficulty in depth. Meanwhile, Albert the Great inspired Boethius of Dacia and others to create a relativist conception of scientific knowledge that allowed Christian teachers to remain faithful Aristotelians. At the same time, early anthropologists such as John of Piano Carpini, John Mandeville, and Montaigne developed other sorts of relativism in response to the issue. Clean copy.

A close analysis of some of the typical peasant uprisings of the seventeenth century. In Russia, however, the peasants attempted to overturn the rigid order of a two-class structure and replace it with a more democratic society. Clean copy.

Hardcover. Seattle, Fantagraphics, 1st, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Hardcover in pictorial boards, 298 pages. Published for the first time in English -- and the first time in color -- the classic Petra Cherie by Italian master Attilio Micheluzzi follows the dramatic adventures of a mysterious heroine during the end of World War I. Originally published in serial format from 1977-1982, Petra Cherie follows the adventures of Petra De Karlowitz, 'Cherie' to creator Micheluzzi, who addresses her throughout the book. Born to a Polish businessman and the most beautiful woman in Paris, raised in Canton, China, and now based in neutral Holland, she is a spy who answers only to herself. Evoking but cleverly eschewing stereotypes of the femme fatale, Petra is equally at home in the cockpit of an airplane and behind the wheel of a motorcar. More than that, she is an endlessly fascinating enigma and one of the most iconic characters in Italian comics. In short, thrilling tales across sky, sea, and land, zipping from Northern Europe to Mitteleuropa, from the Balkans to the Bosphorus to the nascent Soviet Union, Micheluzzi grapples with an era when Europe's borders were in flux and battle lines were often blurred. This elegant volume is the first comprehensive published study in English of the finely carved wooden covers designed to protect fragile Tibetan Buddhist texts. From the 11th through 14th centuries, Tibetan monks worked tirelessly to transcribe the life and teachings of the Buddha onto paper. Highly skilled craftsmen then covered these pages with wooden boards that had been elaborately and painstakingly carved, gilded, and painted. The MacLean Collection, based in Chicago, has significant holdings of these extremely rare and ornately decorated objects. The first and most comprehensive of its kind, this lavishly produced, oversize volume features numerous illustrations of magnificent book covers from Tibet as well as several examples from other cultures. The volume tells the fascinating history of these objects, examines the materials from which they were carved, and traces stylistic influences from Kashmir, India, Nepal, and China.

"Robert Weil has written a brilliant, powerfully argued book that cuts through the hogwash pouring from the West and from China about the 'miracle' of the Deng reforms. This is powerful stuff, must-reading for all those who care about the future of humanity."--William Hinton. Clean, bright copy.

The Quing Dynasty, which spanned three centuries, from 1644 to 1911, was the last ruling dynasty of China. Before the collapse of the empire ended 2,000 years of Imperialism and ushered in a time of political and economic strife, artists and artisans turned out rich paintings, porcelain plates, vases and photographs--the last having arrived in the country in the 1840s. This publication presents a key selection of photographs of the Southern Chinese coast taken by both Chinese and European photographers. It touches on the cultural exchange between the Chinese and those Western photographers who began to explore the country, like Milton M. Miller, William Saunders and John Thomson. Miller, during a short period in the 1860s, set up a photo studio in Hong Kong and introduced portraiture in the formal Western style of the time to the Chinese upper-middle classes.
Hardcover. Tokyo, International House of Japan, 1st English Ed., 2006, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket, 201 pages. Many of the world's major economies face shrinking populations this century. Everyone from Japan and Italy to China will have older and then shrinking populations in the foreseeable future. Japan is the first major economy to head down this path and there is a great deal to learn from their experience. Professor Masutani's book is the best text available in English. Some quick lessons - automation is not a solution, economies will shrink. The sometimes desperate acts that companies and governments take to prevent this shrinkage (like running deficits and over investment in automation and infrastructure) will make things worse, not better. Shrinking populations can lead to a healthier and happier population if the right policy steps are taken. Companies need to shift focus from growing the top-line (sales) to a focus on value generation and the bottom line. Clean copy.
