The Tour de France: A Cultural History
by: Thompson, Christopher S.

Hardcover. Berkeley, University of California Press, 1st, 2006, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright, unclipped dust jacket, 385 pages, b&w illustrations. In this highly original history of the world's most famous bicycle race, Christopher S. Thompson, mining previously neglected sources and writing with infectious enthusiasm for his subject, tells the compelling story of the Tour de France from its creation in 1903 to the present. Weaving the words of racers, politicians, Tour organizers, and a host of other commentators together with a wide-ranging analysis of the culture surrounding the event including posters, songs, novels, films, and media coverage Thompson links the history of the Tour to key moments and themes in French history. He argues persuasively that this hugely popular sporting event has been instrumental in French attempts to grapple with the great challenges they have confronted during their tumultuous twentieth century from World Wars, political divisions, and class conflict to economic modernization, women's emancipation, and threats to public health. Name on half title page, otherwise clean.

The War of the Two Emperors: The Duel between Napoleon and Alexander: Russia 1812
by: Cate, Curtis

Hardcover. NY, Random House, 1st, 1985, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket, 487 pages, b&w illustrations. Napoleon's colorful but disastrous Russian campaign has been strangely neglected by American publishers. Bridging the gap between popular and scholarly history, historian Cate has written a thoroughly detailed and researched account that should also appeal to the lay reader. His writing is deliberately paced but dramatic and does far more justice to the extremely complex political and military situation of 1812 than Philippe de Segur's Napoleon's Russian Campaign (1965), the only other work available in the United States. The Wind from the East: French Intellectuals, the Cultural Revolution, and the Legacy of the 1960s
by: Richard Wolin

Hardcover. Princeton NJ, Princeton University Press, 1st, 2010, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright, unclipped dust jacket, 391 pages. How Maoism captured the imagination of French intellectuals during the 1960s. Michel Foucault, Jean-Paul Sartre, Julia Kristeva, Phillipe Sollers, and Jean-Luc Godard. During the 1960s, a who's who of French thinkers, writers, and artists, spurred by China's Cultural Revolution, were seized with a fascination for Maoism. Combining a merciless expose of left-wing political folly and cross-cultural misunderstanding with a spirited defense of the 1960s, The Wind from the East tells the colorful story of this legendary period in France. Richard Wolin shows how French students and intellectuals, inspired by their perceptions of the Cultural Revolution, and motivated by utopian hopes, incited grassroots social movements and reinvigorated French civic and cultural life.

The World of the Paris Café: Sociability among the French Working Class, 1789-1914
by: W. Scott Haine

Hardcover. Baltimore, Johns Hopkins University Press, 1st, 1996, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Good, Hardcover in a dust jacket with sunning to spine, 325 pages, b&w illustrations. In The World of the Paris Cafe, W. Scott Haine investigates what the working-class cafe reveals about the formation of urban life in nineteenth-century France. Cafe society was not the product of a small elite of intellectuals and artists, he argues, but was instead the creation of a diverse and changing working population. Making unprecedented use of primary sources -- from marriage contracts to police and bankruptcy records -- Haine investigates the cafe in relation to work, family life, leisure, gender roles, and political activity. This rich and provocative study offers a bold reinterpretation of the social history of the working men and women of Paris. Clean copy.

The Years
by: Annie Ernaux

Softcover. NY, Seven Stories Press, reprint, 2017, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, 237 pages. On its 2008 publication in France, The Years came as a surprise. Though Ernaux had for years been hailed as a beloved, bestselling and award-winning author, The Years was in many ways a departure: both an intimate memoir "written" by entire generations, and a story of generations telling a very personal story. Like the generation before hers, the narrator eschews the "I" for the "we" (or "they", or "one") as if collective life were inextricably intertwined with a private life that in her parents' generation ceased to exist. She writes of her parents' generation (and could be writing of her own book): "From a common fund of hunger and fear, everything was told in the "we" and impersonal pronouns." Clean, bright copy.
