Roer River Battles: Germany's Stand at the Westwall, 1944

Hardcover. Casemate, 1st, 2010, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dustjacket, 264 pages. Following the Allied breakout from the Normandy beachhead in July 1944, the vaunted German Army seemed on the verge of collapse. As British and US forces fanned out across northwestern France, enemy resistance unexpectedly dissolved into a headlong retreat to the German and Belgian borders. In early September an elated Allied High Command had every expectation of continuing their momentum to cripple the enemy's warmaking capability, by capturing the Ruhr industrial complex and plunging into the heart of Germany. After a brief pause to allow for resupply, Courtney Hodge's First Army prepared to punch through the ominous but largely outdated Westwall (Siegfried Line) surrounding Aachen. Drawing on primary Wehrmacht and US sources, including battle analysis and daily situation and after-action reports, The Roer River Battles provides insight into the desperate German efforts to keep a conquering enemy at the borders of their homeland. Tactical maps down to battalion level help clarify the very fluid nature of the combat. Combined, they serve to explain not just how, but why decisions were made and events unfolded, and how reality often differed from doctrine in one of the longest US campaigns of World War II.

Rover and Coo Coo
by: John Hay/Tim Solliday

Hardcover. La Jolla CA, Green Tiger Press, 2nd pr., 1986, Book: Good, Dust Jacket: None, Hardcover, illustrated boards, no dust jacket. Rover and Coo Coo is a story in the traditional style of story telling, a story that was told to generations of the Hay family around an open fire in winter or on an open porch in summer. It takes place when Indiana was a frontier, and Charles Hay left his family in their log cabin and went to the distant mill to have his corn ground. The adventure takes place in the dark forest with a chase by hungry wolves, and Charles' faithful hounds saving the day. There are beautiful and clear descriptions of the surroundings in those pristine times. The illustrations of the highly acclaimed artist, Tim Soliday, bring it all alive. In the end Charles is safe with his wife and two small children, and he speaks of nature and how all creatures have a place in the larger picture of the oneness of the world.

Salt Dreams: Land and Water in Low-Down California
by: Debuys, William/ Myers, Joan (Photographer)

Hardcover. Albuquerque, University of New Mexico Press, 1st, 1999, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket, 307 pages. In all North America you cannot get much lower than the Imperial Valley of southern California, where one town, 186 feet below sea level, calls itself the Lowest Down City in the Western Hemisphere, and where the waters of the Colorado River sustain a billion-dollar agricultural industry. The consequences of that industry drain from the valley into the accidentally man-made Salton Sea, California's largest lake and a vital stopping place for migratory waterfowl. Today the Salton Sea is in desperate environmental trouble. A second river also ends in the Salton Sea. It is a river of dreams, the remains of which may be seen in the failed real estate developments that sprawl beside the sea. As the ending point of both the real Colorado and this river of dreams, the Salton Sea has become emblematic of much of the history of the American West. Its troubling story is masterfully told here in William deBuys's narrative and Joan Myers's austerely beautiful photographs. Mild wear, ereasure to front fly leaf, otherwise clean.

Sambia Sexual Culture: Essays from the Field
by: Gilbert Herdt

Softcover. University of Chicago Press, 1st pbk, 1999, Softcover, 327 pages. Few cultures have received as much attention in the study of erotic desire, sexuality, and gender as the Sambia of Papua New Guinea. Here, for the first time, is a collection of groundbreaking essays and a new introduction on the Sambia's sexual culture by the renowned anthropologist Gilbert Herdt. Over the course of 20 years, Herdt made 13 field trips to live with the Sambia in order to understand sexuality and ritual in the context of warfare and gender segregation. Herdt's essays examine Sambia fetish and fantasy, ritual nose-bleeding, the role of homoerotic insemination, the role of the father and mother in the process of identity formation, and the creation of a "third sex" in nature and culture. He also discusses the representation of homosexuality in cross-cultural literature on premodern societies, arguing that scholars have long viewed desires through the tropes of negative western models. Sawgrass Poems: A View of the Everglades (SIGNED COPY)
by: Frank Asch (Author), Ted Levin (Illustrator)

Hardcover. San Diego CA, Gulliver Books, 1st, 1996, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright, unclipped dust jacket, 52 pages. signed by both author and photographer on the dedication page. Beginning with an eloquent introduction to the Everglades, this collection of 20 poems transports readers to that unique place and challenges them to look at it intently, often through the eyes of creatures living there. Striking, full-color photographs by Ted Levin provide glimpses of a wide variety of animals, plants, and landscapes. Each poem appears on a double-page spread along with one full-page photo and one or more smaller ones. The voice of the verse varies. Some are in third-person narration: "Some rivers rush to the sea. They push and tumble and fall / but the Everglades is a river / with no hurry in her at all." Other poems are from the animals' viewpoint, like this from the otter: "But there are gators where I swim. / My life is not all play. / Sometimes I am the hunter. / Sometimes I am the prey." Science and the Secrets of Nature: Books of Secrets in Medieval and Early Modern Culture
by: William Eamon

Softcover. Princeton NJ, Princeton University Press, reprint, 1996, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, pictorial wraps, 490 pages. By explaining how to sire multicolored horses, produce nuts without shells, and create an egg the size of a human head, Giambattista Della Porta's Natural Magic (1559) conveys a fascination with tricks and illusions that makes it a work difficult for historians of science to take seriously. Yet, according to William Eamon, it is in the "how-to" books written by medieval alchemists, magicians, and artisans that modern science has its roots. These compilations of recipes on everything from parlor tricks through medical remedies to wool-dyeing fascinated medieval intellectuals because they promised access to esoteric "secrets of nature." In closely examining this rich but little-known source of literature, Eamon reveals that printing technology and popular culture had as great, if not stronger, an impact on early modern science as did the traditional academic disciplines. Scoop. A Novel About Journalists
by: Evelyn Waugh

Hardcover. London, Chapman & Hall, 1st, 1938, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Hardcover, publisher's red and black marble-patterned cloth, lettered in gilt to spine. Scoop is a humorous novel in which Waugh satirizes foreign correspondence and sensational journalism. Specifically, it tells the story of William Boot, an inexperienced journalist and author of a nature column for The Beast. This real life reporter was identified as Lord Deeds. Boot is mistakenly identified as his novelist cousin and sent to the fictional East African country of Ishmaelia to cover its socialist insurrection. Ironically, Boot's naivete allows him to get the real "scoop" not reported by more experienced journalists. Notably, Scoop is based on Waugh's own experiences working as a journalist for the British Daily Mail during Mussolini's 1935 invasion of Ethiopia. Clean, square copy.

Search for the Real and Other Essays
by: Hans Hofmann

Softcover. Cambridge MA, MIT Press, 4th pr., 1977, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, 82 pages, b&w illustrations. The collected writings of the "dean of the New York School of Abstract-Expressionist Painting." "The creative process lies not in imitating, but in paralleling nature; translating the impulse received from nature into the medium of expression, thus vitalizing this medium. The picture should be alive, the statue should be alive and every work of art should be alive." Thus Hans Hofmann wrote nearly half a century ago. He left the Old World, Germany, for the New, at the age of 50. In 1948, when the retrospective exhibition was held at the Addison Gallery of American Art, Hofmann was 68; he had been in the United States for 18 years, a citizen for seven years. Yet he was scarcely recognized in Europe or America as an artist of significance and had never had a full-scale retrospective exhibition of his work. Beginning with a group exhibition in Germany in 1909, he had been given 12 one-man shows and had been included in four group exhibitions before the exhibit at Andover. Subsequently, he was to have 33 one-man shows and to be in over 60 group exhibitions, including the 1960 Venice Biennale, in which he was one of the four artists chosen to represent America. Shadow of Heaven: Poems
by: Ellen Bryant Voigt

Hardcover. NY, W W Norton & Co., 1st, 2002, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket with publisher's silver sticker. A follow-up to the author's highly acclaimed Kyrie, a finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award, offers an intimate exploration of the obstacles and joys of modern life. Voigt's disciplined poems are scrubbed clean, exact in their forms, and calm in tone, refined distillations of deep feelings and long meditations on nature and life as seen flourishing in wondrous manifestations right in her own backyard. These are classical works, and Voigt lays her cards on the table by paying homage to Horace and his odes, models of balance and precision. Like her mentor, Voigt is aware of death hovering in the wings, and, indeed, illness, injury, and age work their bent and burdened ways into her poems; yet the poet remains undaunted, continuing to take profound pleasure in gazing at trees and flowers, gardening, and participating in various kitchen activities, from careful conversations between adult sisters living very different lives to the affectionately aggressive banter among men happy to sit down to a good meal. Deceptive in their hominess and welcoming clarity, Voigt's poems are thoroughly considered creations in which every word, no matter how humble, is worth its weight in gold. Clean copy.

Shopkeepers and Master Artisans in Nineteenth-Century Europe
by: Crossick, Geoffrey & Heinz-Gerhard Haupt

Hardcover. London, Methuen, 1st, 1984, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright, lightly worn dust jacket, 283 pages. Shopkeepers and master artisans had a striking presence in the history of nineteenth-century Europe, not only in the development of industrial and urban economies, but also the fabric of social life and the politics of protest. The experience of 1848, the differing pace of various forms of nationalism and liberalism and, at the end of the century, the shift towards right-wing nationalist or Catholic political movements reflected a developing 'crisis' in the petite bourgeoisie. The essays examine the nature of this crisis and ask critical questions about the social relations of the petite bourgeoisie with the developing working classes. This book as a whole provides a fresh and integrated approach to the world of these shopkeepers and master artisans and illuminates much else besides in the social history of nineteenth-century Europe.
