Peter and the Wolf (SIGNED COPY)
by: Raschka, Chris (after Prokofiev, Sergei)

Hardcover. NY, Atheneum, 1st, 2008, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, color illustrations by Raschka. Sergei Prokofiev composed his Peter and the Wolf in 1936 with the hope of introducing children to the instruments of the orchestra. It happens that he also devised a wonderfully dramatic story. The characters - boy, bird, duck, cat, grandfather, wolf, hunters - and their doings have been beloved by young and old for decades. Writer, artist, musician, and Caldecott Medalist Chris Raschka has given the original story a new setting: a stage performance. Here you will relish language inspired music; enjoy mischief, suspense, and triumph in the theater; and delight in a surprise (and an additional character) Prokofiev's merry tale didn't provide. Please do not turn immediately to the last page. SIGNED BY RASCHKA.

Philadelphia Merchant: The Diary of Thomas P. Cope, 1800-1851
by: Thomas P. Cope/Eliza Cope Harrison (Editor)

Hardcover. South Bend IN, Gateway Editions, 1st, 1978, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Fair, Hardcover in an edgeworn, unclipped dust jacket. INSCRIBED BY EDITOR HARRISON on the title page. 628 pages, b&w illustrations. Thomas Cope was a wealthy merchant and ship owner, a force in city and state government, a philanthropist and--by no means least--a Quaker. He is best described in his own words about his writing and himself: "I have laid down no regular plan and I follow none. My diary is like myself, a chequered maze." He was committed to the service of others--the poor, the sick, the insane--and labored to improve the civic life of Philadelphia in far-sighted ways. He was a moving force behind the water system, a founder of the Mercantile Library, an advocate for the Penn. Railroad, and a supporter of poorhouses, among many other civic and philanthropic activities. He was also a deeply passionate man, whose fluent style at times seethes with emotion. Even into his eighties he struggled to control his temper. Perceptive and intelligently engaged, Cope comments on all the major historical events of his time, such as the yellow fever epidemics, the War of 1812, and the looming Civil War, as well as the more personal dramas of his own life. Some tape repairs ro dj, clean copy.

by: Philip Montgomery , Patrick Radden Keefe (Contributor), Jelani Cobb (Contributor)

Hardcover. NY, Aperture, 1st, 2021, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Hardcover, beige cloth covers with black lettering, 160 pages. American Mirror is award-winning photographer Philip Montgomery's dramatic chronicle of the United States at a time of profound change. Through his intimate and powerful reporting and a signature black-and-white style, Montgomery reveals the fault lines in American society, from police violence and the opioid addiction crisis to the Covid-19 pandemic and the demonstrations in support of Black lives. Yet in his unflinching images, we also see moments of grace and sacrifice, glimmers of solidarity and tireless advocates for democracy. Like Dorothea Lange and Walker Evans before him, Montgomery has made an unforgettable testament of a nation at a crossroads. SIGNED BY MONTGOMERY on the title page.

Picturing Freedom: African Americans & Their Cars, A Photographic History (SIGNED COPY)
by: Stanley B. Burns; Elizabeth A. Burns

Softcover. NY, Burns Archive Press, 1st, 2022, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, 272 pages. SIGNED BY STANLEY BURNS on title page. Picturing Freedom chronicles and celebrates the photographic history of African Americans and their cars by focusing on personal images of the pride and joy of car ownership (1900-1980+). Owning a car was a significant life-changing achievement. It offered special freedoms--the freedom to travel, the freedom to work further from home, the freedom to visit family and friends, the freedom to avoid Jim Crow laws, and the freedom to migrate. The car was unequivocal evidence of Black success and an important symbol of status in a country that had long fought their advancement in every area. Car ownership was purposely and proudly photographed. All of the photographs were taken in Black communities by a family member or a friend and reveal how African Americans represented themselves. This 2022 IPPY award-winning compilation of over 450 unique photographs is an inspiring visual narrative of American life. Clean, bright copy.
