Not My Best Side: Selected Poems
by: Fanthorpe, U. A.

Softcover. Baylor University Press, 1st, 2024, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, 226 pages. The English poet U. A. Fanthorpe (1929-2009) liked to call herself "a middle-aged drop-out," having abandoned a successful teaching career to focus on her poetry, even concealing her Oxford degree so she could find paid work--at Hoover, then as a hospital receptionist. This gave her a chance to study people, which is what her wonderful poems do best. Fanthorpe's verse is instinctively English, often very moving, frequently funny, invariably rooted in her faith. Fanthorpe and her partner, Rosie Bailey, became Quakers in the 1980s. These poems touch on spiritual matters, dramatize Bible stories, and are underpinned by a profound moral sense. Fanthorpe does not judge; rather, she watches, records, and allows her words to do their work. Clean copy.

Now We're Getting Somewhere: Poems
by: Addonozio, Kim

Hardcover. NY, Norton, 1st, 2021, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket. A dark, no-holds-barred, and often hilarious collection from a prize-winning poet, veering between the poles of self and world. Kim Addonizio's sharp and irreverent eighth volume, Now We're Getting Somewhere, is an essential companion to your practice of the Finnish art of kalsarikannit-drinking at home, alone in your underwear, with no intention of going out. Imbued with the poet's characteristic precision and passion, the collection charts a hazardous course through heartache, climate change, dental work, Outlander, semiotics, and more. Combatting existential gloom with a wicked, seductive energy, Addonizio investigates desire, loss, and the madness of contemporary life. She calls out to Walt Whitman and John Keats, echoes Dorothy Parker, and finds sisterhood with Virginia Woolf. Sometimes confessional, sometimes philosophical, these poems weave from desolation to drollery and clamor with raucous imagery: an insect in high heels, a wolf at an uncomfortable party, a glowing and self-serious guitar.

Softcover. El Paso TX, Cinco Puntos Press, 1st, 1992, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, 96 pages. SIGNED ON THE TITLE PAGE BY BYRD. "Byrd sure shoots a mean game with words. His language, his subject matter, his sensibility are there to remind us that 'we really inhabit / the holy body of God,' that we are all 'hungry ghosts / all of us." Ultimately, Byrd's book is about the community Byrd has learned to embrace--his book is a work that pays homage to those who have formed him--his neighbors, his children, his wife, the poets whose voices still urge him to write. This is a book for everybody." --Benjamin Alire Saenz. Small name on front fly leaf, otherwise clean.
