Maxfield Parrish (SIGNED COPY)
by: Cutler, Judy Goffman; Cutler, Laurence S.; Parrish, Maxfield

Hardcover. San Diego, Thunder Bay Press, 1st, 2001, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket. 144 pages illustrated in color. INSCRIBED BY THE AUTHORS on the half-title page. Maxfield Parrish has long been considered one of the greatest American illustrators of the 20th century. In the early 1920s, when his works Garden of Allah and Daybreak were reproduced as art prints, he quickly became one of the best known artists in America with his art images appearing on posters, calendars, magazine covers, and book illustrations. His unmistakable paintings, characterized by "Parrish Blue" water and skies, luminescent rocks and hills, and exquisite young women in flowing classical robes, are infused with a romantic Eden-like quality so entrancing that reproductions are as enthusiastically received today as the prints were when they first appeared. A wonderful selection of his work with brilliant reproductions. Clean copy.

Maxfield Parrish: A Retrospectiveby: Laurence S. Cutler , Judy Goffman Cutler , et al.

Maxfield Parrish: A Retrospective
by: Laurence S. Cutler , Judy Goffman Cutler , et al.

Hardcover. San Francisco, Pomegranate, 2nd pr., 1996, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 164 pages. It was estimated in the 1920s that one out of four homes in America had one of Parrish's make-believe illustrations on the wall, and he remains one of our best-loved illustrators. This unique work, a celebration of "Parrish Blue" water and skies, hued hills, and young women draped in classical garments, is the result of a 1995 traveling exhibit, "Maxfield Parrish: A Retrospective." The Cutlers, he an architect and she a gallery owner, were instrumental in working with the Parrish Family Trust to put together that international exhibit to commemorate the artist's 125th birthday. The Cutlers were able to locate numerous items in private collections for the exhibit. Many of the 130 color plates are of these works, never reproduced before, while better-known pieces are lavishly reproduced from the original paintings rather than prints. The Parrish family offered rare photos for the biographical text, which is supplemented with a reminiscence by granddaughter Joanna Maxfield Parrish.

Michael Rakowitz
by: Carolyn Christov-Bakargiev

Hardcover. Milan, Silvana Editoriale, 1st, 2020, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket. Iraqi-American artist Michael Rakowitz's (b. 1973, USA) first major European survey presents a sequence of installations drawing on architecture, cultural artifacts and cuisine to tell stories of social ritual, conflict and loss. It encompasses work considering the citizen visionaries of post Soviet Hungary, Middle Eastern Beatles fans and the stonecarvers of Afghanistan, with Rakowitz's casts of players and objects revealing the legacy of colonization, modernism and globalism. The artist's life-size replica of the gigantic lamassu, one of two monumental winged bulls that once guarded the gates of Nineveh in Iraq, currently features on Trafalgar Square's Fourth Plinth. This recreation of an ancient mythological creature is made from everyday date syrup cans and is part of an epic endeavour to recreate all 7,000 objects looted from the Iraq Museum in 2003, as well as those destroyed more recently at archaeological sites like Nimrud, also presented here. Text in English and Italian. Short closed tear to dj corner. otherwise like new. DOMESTIC SHIPPING ONLY.

Michael Rovner: The Space Betweenby: Wolf, Sylvia

Michael Rovner: The Space Between
by: Wolf, Sylvia

Hardcover. New York, Whitney Museum of American Art/Steidl, 1st, 2002, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Flexible boards, 264 pages. B/w and color illustrations throughout. Published to accompany exhibition at Whitney Museum of American Art in New York. Super clean. By repeatedly re-photographing her images, transferring them from video to film and back again, and manipulating them digitally, Michal Rovner creates photographic and video imagery that abstract familiar subjects like houses, animals, and people into ambiguous and iconic forms. Working with representation but against the traditions of narrative and documentary purpose, her artworks imply a tentative universe, one that is paradoxically peaceful and unsettled, vivid and shrouded, and completely counter-factual. If the changing nature of art has resulted in a general blurring of boundaries--between painting and photography, reality and memory, presence and absence--Rovner mines this haziness, refuses to respect borders, and exists completely in The Space Between.

Moment of Caravaggio, The (The A. W. Mellon Lectures in the Fine Arts)by: Fried, Michael

Moment of Caravaggio, The (The A. W. Mellon Lectures in the Fine Arts)
by: Fried, Michael

Hardcover. Princeton NJ, Princeton University Press, 1st, 2010, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, 304 pages. illustrated throughout in color. Light edgewear to dust jacket with two small closed tears. Clean, tight copy. This is a groundbreaking examination of one of the most important artists in the Western tradition by one of the leading art historians and critics of the past half-century. In his first extended consideration of the Italian Baroque painter Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio (1573-1610), Michael Fried offers a transformative account of the artist's revolutionary achievement. Based on the A. W. Mellon Lectures in the Fine Arts delivered at the National Gallery of Art, The Moment of Caravaggio displays Fried's unique combination of interpretive brilliance, historical seriousness, and theoretical sophistication, providing sustained and unexpected readings of a wide range of major works, from the early Boy Bitten by a Lizard to the late Martyrdom of Saint Ursula. And with close to 200 color images, The Moment of Caravaggio is as richly illustrated as it is closely argued. The result is an electrifying new perspective on a crucial episode in the history of European painting. Focusing on the emergence of the full-blown "gallery picture" in Rome during the last decade of the sixteenth century and the first decades of the seventeenth, Fried draws forth an expansive argument, one that leads to a radically revisionist account of Caravaggio's relation to the self-portrait; of the role of extreme violence in his art, as epitomized by scenes of decapitation; and of the deep structure of his epoch-defining realism. Fried also gives considerable attention to the art of Caravaggio's great rival, Annibale Carracci, as well as to the work of Caravaggio's followers, including Orazio and Artemisia Gentileschi, Bartolomeo Manfredi, and Valentin de Boulogne.

Naked Shoe, The: The Artistry of Mabel Julianelliby: Julianelli, Jane

Naked Shoe, The: The Artistry of Mabel Julianelli
by: Julianelli, Jane

Hardcover. US, Antique Collectors Club , 1st, 2010, Book: Near Fine, Dust Jacket: Near Fine, Like new in publishers shrink-wrap. Hardcover, 240 pages, mostly bw photos, some color. This book depicts, both in pictures and biographical text, the life and work of Mabel Julianelli, starting as a pattern designer in Brooklyn, NY. Beginning with her student years studying commercial art at Pratt Institute in the 1920s, and spanning her 40-plus year career, Mabel Julianelli, with her husband and partner Charles Julianelli, is credited with many constructional, interpretative, and fashion firsts. Her 1950 Coty Award-winning naked evening sandal, which had versions into the 1960s and 1970, is vital today due to the resurgence of ballroom dancing (i.e. 'Dancing With The Stars'): a style Mabel Julianelli first designed at a time when nobody wore sandals as evening wear. Mabel Julianelli's 1940s wedge sandal patent was referenced by Nike, Inc. in the 1990s and her shoe designs and ornaments were referenced by Jimmy Choo Ltd. in 2004-2006, among others. Her forte was the wearable, comfortable construction of shoes so it is no wonder that today's shoe companies have referenced her 1940s patents.

O'Keeffe's O'Keeffes - The Artists Collectionby: Lynes, Barbara Buhler

O'Keeffe's O'Keeffes - The Artists Collection
by: Lynes, Barbara Buhler

Hardcover. London, Thames & Hudson, 1st, 2001, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 192 pages. 106 illustrations 97 in color. Still in shrinkwrap. The first exploration of the art that Georgia O'Keeffe retained for her personal collection, including works that have never been publicly exhibited. Georgia O'Keeffe was one of America's preeminent artists and one of the first to experiment with abstract form, though she never abandoned her deep response to and observation of nature. An enormously popular artist, she became identified and respected as an independent American spirit through both her art and her life. At the time of her death in 1986, Georgia O'Keeffe owned more than half of the approximately 2,000 works she had produced during the eighty years she was active as an artist: some 400 works in oil, charcoal, pastel, pencil, and watercolor, as well as more than 700 sketches. For various reasons, she had always kept a portion of her art out of the public eye and these works were not published, exhibited, or available for purchase during her lifetime. Among the works that had been exhibited and sold over the years, some were repurchased by O'Keeffe as they became available. This book explores for the first time the significance of O'Keeffe's collection of her own work. Approximately 75 seminal works, dating from about 1910 through the 1960s and reproduced in full color, document the range and quality of the art that O'Keeffe either chose to retain in her estate or consciously distributed to institutions in her lifetime and as bequests.

Paintings
by: Stan Rice

Hardcover. NY, Knopf, 1st, 1997, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket, pages. Vivid, passionate, primitive - 113 paintings by the poet Stan Rice. Here, his canvases explore the terrain of his poetry, as he captures the familiar and the mythical, the magical and the everyday. Here are legendary beasts, card players; images inspired by Greek myths, Bible stories, nursery rhymes. Some pay homage to objects - others to living things. They belong to no contemporary school. They are at once childlike, ironic, and darkly humorous - paintings that attest to the original vision of a talented poet and painter.
