Paul Klee: Theater Everywhere by: Klee, Paul, Editor: Klee, Zentrum Paul

Paul Klee: Theater Everywhere
by: Klee, Paul, Editor: Klee, Zentrum Paul

Hardcover. Ostfildern GR, Hatje Cantz, 1st, 2008, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket, 279 pages, illustrated in color and b&w. The work of Paul Klee (1879-1940) was deeply influenced by his passion for the theater. Throughout his life, the artist fervently attended theatrical performances, from the opera to puppet shows. Characters from plays or operas Hamlet, Falstaff, or Don Giovanni, for example populate his cryptic visual world. Various types of characters or theatrical elements, such as the clown or the mask, were firmly established themes in his pictorial repertoire. However, Klee primarily forged links between the theater and life, and in so doing, he took up the traditional theme of the world as a stage: people became actors or marionettes; theatrical events converged with scenes from everyday life. This publication sheds light on all of these aspects of Klee's captivation with the stage. A chronology reconstructs a panoramic view of his multifaceted experience with the theater. Selected works by contemporary artists make it clear that not only Klee was fascinated by the sharp-eyed perception of theatrical situations it is a topic that continues to engage artists even today. 394 plates, 212 in color. Clean copy. DOMESTIC SHIPPING ONLY.

Softcover. NY, Taschen, reprint, 2017, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, 256 pages, color photographs. Pictorial French fold wrappers. 'American photographer Paul Outerbridge created shimmering "artifical paradises.' From Cubist still life images to nudes, his sensitivity to light and shadow and pioneering use of color transformed everyday scenarios into near-abstract compositions. Peter Blake: Retrospectiveby: Grunenberg , Christoph

Peter Blake: Retrospective
by: Grunenberg , Christoph

Softcover. London, Tate Gallery, 1st, 2007, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, 216 pages. A key figure in the history of British Pop Art, Blake is one of the most influential and original artists working in Britain today. Central to Blake's work since the 1950s has been his fascination with popular culture, ranging from music to Hollywood icons and wrestling stars. Perhaps his most famous engagement with Pop came with his design for the cover of The Beatles' album Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. With this and other works he helped create a specifically British pop aesthetic that defined an era. A prolific artist, he has utilised a variety of media including painting, drawing, collage, sculpture and printmaking; this study focuses principally on his two-dimensional works and provides the first thorough survey of his paintings from the 1950s through to the present. It will include major icons of twentieth-century art, such as Self-Portrait with badges (1961), and Have a Nice Day, Mr Hockney (1981-3), but will also feature many lesser-known works including his recent, major work The Marcel Duchamp World Series.

Phil Frost
by: Pushead, Carlo McCormick, et al.

Hardcover. Damiani, 1st, 2008, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Hardcover, 162 pages. Part of a whole gang of street artists--from Barry McGee to Swoon--who have broken into the art world in the last decade or so, Phil Frost's signature style is a funky tribalism--Hawaii by way of New York City--infused with a quirky sense of art history and design. In the 1990s, Frost honed his skills by painting walls, found objects and street detritus with his intricate, compulsive and highly evolved form of tagging. Frost's gallery exhibitions are crowded affairs, filled with wildly patterned totemic objects and baseball bats while the walls are stacked with colorful mixed media paintings. He crafts his painstaking paintings by collaging layers of found imagery on grounds of symmetrical black-and-white patterning, which he paints with correction fluid, and that often morph into language-like glyphs or symbols. Frost states, "I believe [my work] is indigenous to myself. I believe that within every person there is an indigenous expression of themselves." Including an essay by New York journalist Carlo McCormick and notorious lowbrow artist Pusshead, this is Frost's first monograph, and an invaluable introduction to the evolution of his style.

Hardcover. Germany, Steidl Publishers, 1st, 2008, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, 295 pages. Hardcover with no dust jacket. A clean, unmarked copy with only minor edgewear. Minor yellowing to textblock edges. Black and white photographs throughout. Richard Avedon, America's preeminent portraitist and fashion photographer, photographed the many faces of politics throughout his career. Portraits of Power brings together Avedon's political portraits for the first time. Juxtaposing images of elite government, media and labor officials with counter-cultural activists, writers and artists, as well as ordinary citizens caught up in national debates, it offers a five-decade taxonomy of politics and power by one of America's best-known artists. The book features several of Avedon's extended projects addressing these themes, including coverage of the civil rights debate in the early 1960s (published in 1964 in Nothing Personal); the American anti-war movement and the war in Vietnam from 1969-1971; portraits of the American power elite in 1976, produced for his groundbreaking Rolling Stone portfolio "The Family;" "Exiles: The Kennedy Court at the End of the American Century," a retrospective homage to the Camelot generation published in the New Yorker in 1993; and his final photo-essay, "Democracy," surveying the national mood during the politically fractious period prior to the 2004 presidential elections (published posthumously in the New Yorker in 2004).

Power to the People presents the Israel Museum's major collection of propaganda posters from the early years of the Soviet Union, documenting one of the most interesting chapters in twentieth-century graphic design. The Israel Museum's collection of Soviet propaganda posters is the largest museum collection of its kind outside Russia. This book illustrates the entire collection for the first time.

R. B. Kitajby: Livingstone, Marco

R. B. Kitaj
by: Livingstone, Marco

Hardcover. New York, Rizzoli, 1st, 1985, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket,160 pages. Folio. gray cloth, spine stamped in gilt. Richly illustrated with 172 illustrations, 50 in full color. First monograph of this American-born artist who has lived most of his life in England. Includes a catalogue of all his work up until 1985.R.B. Kitaj (1932-2007) is one of the most intriguing 20th century artists. Born into a Russo-Jewish family near Cleveland, Ohio, 17-year old Kitaj spent 5 years at sea aboard a Norwegian freighter. He went on to study art in New York and Vienna. A Royal College of Art stipend made him move to London where he became a celebrated artist. Curating The Human Clay, a 1976 show of figurative contemporary British artists, he coined the term "School of London" for the artistic circle around Francis Bacon, Frank Auerbach, Lucian Freud, and Leon Kossoff. In 1991 he was elected a member of the Royal Academy, one of only three American painters to be thus honored in the history of the institution. A major 1994 retrospective at London's Tate Gallery failed to produce Kitaj's international breakthrough, but was unanimously panned by British critics instead. This, and the unexpected death of his wife Sandra, induced his increasingly paranoid perspective. Embittered he returned to the USA and settled in Los Angeles, where he finally took his own life in 2007. Kitaj left behind a manuscript unmatched among 20th-century artist autobiographies -- Confessions of an Old Jewish Painter. Eloquently describing his vices and sufferings, it stands in the traditions of both St. Augustine and Thomas de Quincey. Now published for the first time, it is a sensation, from both a literary and art historical point of view.

Rackstraw Downes
by: Sanford Schwartz , Robert Storr , et al.

Hardcover. Princeton University Press;, 1st, 2005, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 200 pages. Rackstraw Downes paints down-to-earth, often gritty features of today's American environment in an unflinching and highly realistic style. This book is the first to provide a multifaceted picture of his work, its intellectual foundations, and its place in the history of art--from both outside commentators and Downes himself. Beautifully illustrated, with copious examples from thirty years of the artist's work, the book makes eminently clear why Downes is widely regarded as a "painter's painter." It showcases many of the artist's panoramic pictures--painted with a strong sense of place and a miniaturist's sense of scale. The images, which depict industrial parks, construction sites, housing projects, refineries, razor wire, and landfills, stimulate fresh thoughts about these supposedly unattractive sights. Bathed in the light of a precise time, the paintings resonate with a strikingly evocative quality.

Raymond Pettibon: Here's Your Irony Back: Political Works 1975-2013by: Raymond Pettibon/Benjamin Buchloh

Raymond Pettibon: Here's Your Irony Back: Political Works 1975-2013
by: Raymond Pettibon/Benjamin Buchloh

Hardcover. Hatje Cantz, 1st, 2013, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Hardcover with illustrated boards, 212 pages. Since the late 1970s, as a pioneer of Southern California underground culture, Raymond Pettibon has blurred the boundaries of "high" and "low," from the deviations of marginal youth to art history, literature, sports, religion, politics and sexuality. Rich in detail, his obsessively worked drawings pull freely from myriad sources spanning the cultural spectrum. The resulting, highly poetic constructions function as acute reflections of contemporary society. Throughout the years, his subjects have included political figures and historical events, with particular intensity since the events of September 11, 2001. Seen here are images of Ronald and Nancy Reagan, J. Edgar Hoover, both Bush presidents, the Kennedys, Hitler, scenes from the Vietnam War and protest movements, wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, the prisoner abuse of Abu Ghraib, President Obama and Osama bin Laden. Raymond Pettibon (born 1957) studied economics at UCLA around the same time he joined his brother in the punk band Black Flag. He soon began to contribute artwork to album covers, flyers and t-shirts, for the band and its label, SST Records, and exhibited his work in group shows in galleries in the 1980s. Since the 1990s his work has been the subject of numerous major solo exhibitions.

Rene Herbst: Pioneer of Modernismby: Guillemette Delaporte

Rene Herbst: Pioneer of Modernism
by: Guillemette Delaporte

Hardcover. NY, Flammarion, 1st, 2004, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 224 pages, color and b&w illustrations. Rene Herbst's enduring furniture designs provide fundamental lessons for today's interior designers. A staunch modernist, Herbst was a founding member and later president of the Union des artistes modernes (UAM) in France, which sought to make domestic comfort accessible to all, regardless of class. The diversity of his work is testament to his prolific and creative output, and his design is marked by its simplicity and functionality. The French architect turned designer was nicknamed the "man of steel" because he pioneered the use of the material for furniture years before mass production on a large scale was possible. In 1929 he created several versions of his celebrated Sandow Chair, which ignited his research into serial production and inaugurated the era of mass production. This book presents a selection of the best works from the Herbst Collection held by the library of the Musee des Arts decoratifs in Paris, and demonstrates how Herbst was the catalyst of a new style of living that spurred the birth of modernity.

Renzo Piano: Zentrum Paul Klee, Bern, The Architectureby: Piano, Renzo

Renzo Piano: Zentrum Paul Klee, Bern, The Architecture
by: Piano, Renzo

Hardcover. Germany, Hatje Cantz Publishers, 1st, 2006, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 159 pages. Like new in publishers shrink-wrap. The prominent Genovese architect Renzo Piano--recipient of the 1998 Pritzker Award and architect of the Whitney Museum of American Art and Morgan Library renovations, as well as the new New York Times building--has just completed a new and unusual museum building--the Zentrum Paul Klee on the outskirts of Bern. The center, says Piano, is dedicated to the "poet of silence," and thus it was fitting to consider building a museum that would speak softly. The Zentrum Paul Klee rises upward in the form of three hills connected by a 150-meter-long thoroughfare, the "Museum Street" serving as a path within the complex. The three structures make up a harmonious yet prominent landscape sculpture whose roofs are supported by innovative steel construction. Includes photographs, design sketches, plans and models--a living image of a magnificent building.

Richard Misrach: 11.21.11 5:40 PMby: Misrach, Richard (Photographer)

Richard Misrach: 11.21.11 5:40 PM
by: Misrach, Richard (Photographer)

Hardcover. San Francisco, CA, Fraenkel Gallery, 1st, 2013, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, 32 pages. Hardcover with dust jacket. Very clean, like new in publishers shrink-wrap. A tight copy. In the early 2000s, Richard Misrach (born 1949) began a series titled On the Beach, a body of work that traveled extensively and has been highly influential. These color photographs deal with the human figure seen at a distance, on an unspecified beach or in the water, observed from an unsettling and difficult-to-identify point of view located high above. Misrach has continued this work, while vast changes in photographic technology over the intervening decade have caused a shift in approach, both conceptually and technically. Untitled is an artist book based on two photographs: the one made by Misrach and the other made concurrently, at the time of exposure, by the subjects of his photograph. The extreme detail explored in this work concisely summates both the artist's concerns and the ubiquity of digital technology as we are portrayed and portray ourselves.
