Art of Tom Lovell, The - An Invitation to Historyby: Hedgpeth, Don/Walt Reed

Art of Tom Lovell, The - An Invitation to History
by: Hedgpeth, Don/Walt Reed

Hardcover. New York, Morrow, 1st, 1993, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 160 pages. Illustrated in full color. In a clean, bright dust jacket. A commercial artist who started out sketching in the 1930s for pulp magazines, Lovell advanced to the glossier "slicks" in the 1950s and has since specialized in Old West, Plains Indian, and Civil War themes. He here presents from that long career his best canvases, among them his famed depictions of Lee's surrender and the Fifty-fourth Massachusetts' assault (in film, the climax of Glory). His spark of inspiration is usually to visualize an incident he has read of in the journals of the first white explorers and trappers, such as those of Lewis and Clark. Whether it's Clark firing his rifle or Indians encountering a cannon lost by Fremont, Native Americans are generally presented as wary but curious about the newcomers; Lovell puts the warfare outside of the frame. Themes aside, he works expertly with natural color, and though not a modern George Caitlin, his attention to the detail of Indian dress, carriage, and equipage is quite affecting, fully reflective of his respect for the cultures of Apache, Sioux, etc. A rich tribute to a captivating artist who evokes the West's vast landscape and its individual braves and traders in moods of exuberance and perseverance.

Ascending Chaos: The Art of Masami Teraoka 1966-2006by: Bing, Alison and others

Ascending Chaos: The Art of Masami Teraoka 1966-2006
by: Bing, Alison and others

Hardcover. San Francisco, Chronicle Books, 1st, 2007, Book: Near Fine, Dust Jacket: Near Fine, 244 pages illustrated in color. Scholarly essays accompany this monograph on the Japanese-American artist. In publisher's shrinkwrap. Published to coincide with a series of major exhibitions extending beyond 2007, Ascending Chaos is the first major retrospective of Japanese-American artist Masami Teraoka's prolific and acclaimed work thus far. In Teraoka's paintings which have evolved from his wry mimicry of Japanese woodblock prints to much larger and complex canvasses reminiscent of Bosch and Brueghel the political and the personal collide in a riot of sexually frank tableaux. Populated by geishas and goddesses, priests, and politicians, and prominent contemporary figures, these paintings are the spectacular next phase of a wildly inventive career. With essays by renowned art critics who discuss how Teraoka's work inventively marries east and west, sex and religion, Ascending Chaos is a critical overview of this cultural trickster.

Recently their work has focused on various aspects of sport and the lives of athletes. We are pleased to release simultaneously two books, available separately or as a boxed set. Release of the books coincides with a major exhibition of the Athletes photographs at the National Portrait Gallery in London, scheduled for February 2002. Athletes features photographs taken during the three years prior to the 2000 Olympics in Sydney. Athletes from many countries and various sports are included. Taken as a whole, these images meld into a single reflection of athletics and sport - a dynamic portrait replete with the beauty, toil, and determination of some of the world s finest young athletes as they strive to achieve their Olympic dream. Photographs of the National Danish Gymnastic Team are featured in Gymnasts. This series of nudes emphasizes the beauty and grace of these athletes as they assume classical poses, work through routines, or seemingly defy gravity in aerial photographs.

Bacon's Eye: Works on Paper Attributed to Francis Bacon from the Barry Joule Archive
by: Sladen, Mark/John Hoole, et al.

Softcover. US, 21 Pub, 1st, 2001, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, 112 pages, illustrated throughout in color. Clean, unmarked copy with only minor wear to wrappers. During his lifetime, Francis Bacon maintained that he painted directly onto canvas without the benefit of preparatory studies. Since his death in 1992, however, several groups of works on paper have come to light, offering amazing new insights into Bacon's working methods and personal obsessions. "Bacon's Eye" showcases a unique collectiion of works on paper that were bundled up and given by the artist to his friend Barry Joule just prior to his death. This collection includes a remarkable album of 70 oil sketches that relate to his work from the '50s and '60s, as well as over 900 "working documents": images torn from books, magazines and newspapers that have been painted and sketched over, revealing an artist's-eye-view of some of the most important people and events of the 20th century. As of yet, these works have not been officially recognized as being by Bacon. Permission to to show these works alongside finished paintings was denied by the Bacon Estate. The gallery, 21 Publishing, and a host of Bacon experts firmly believe in the authenticity of these works. This book, along with an exhibition at the Barbican Gallery in London, are a means of allowing the public to judge for itself. Edited by Georgia Mazower. Foreword by John Hoole. Introduction by Mark Sladen. Essay by Mark Sladen.

Banksy: Completedby: Carol Diehl

Banksy: Completed
by: Carol Diehl

Hardcover. Cambridge MA, The MIT Press, 1st, 2021, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Hardcover in boards, 208 pages, illustrated in color. Banksy is the world's most famous living artist, yet no one knows who he is. For more than twenty years, his wryly political and darkly humorous spray paintings have appeared mysteriously on urban walls around the globe, generating headlines and controversy. Art critics disdain him, but the public (and the art market) love him. With this generously illustrated book, artist and critic Carol Diehl is the first author to probe the depths of the Banksy mystery. Through her exploration of his paintings, installations, writings, and Academy Award-nominated film, Exit through the Gift Shop, Diehl proves unequivocally that there's more to Banksy than the painting on the wall. Seeing Banksy as the ultimate provocateur, Diehl investigates the dramas that unfold after his works are discovered, with all of their social, economic, and political implications. She reveals how this trickster rattles the system, whether during his month-long 2013 self-styled New York "residency" or his notorious Dismaland of 2015, a full-scale dystopian "family theme park unsuitable for children" dedicated to the failure of capitalism. Clean copy.

Hardcover. US, Reel Art Press, 1st, 2014, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Large heavy book, 448 pages, illustrated throughout in b&w. Clean, unmarked copy with only minor wear to dust jacket. This breathtaking tome is the definitive and comprehensive collection of Billy Name's black-and-white photographs from Warhol's Factory. Name's photographs from this period (1964-68) are one of the most important photographic documents of any single artist in history. Name lived in a tiny closet at the Factory. He was responsible for the legendary "silverizing" of the space using aluminum paint and foil to complete the instillation. When Warhol gave Name a Pentax Honeywell 35mm camera, he took on the role of resident photographer and archivist. This visual essay, produced in collaboration with Billy name, offers an extensive trip through Warhol's world. Name photographed the day-to-day happenings at The Factory with Andy, including visits from Lou Reed and the Velvet Underground, Nico, Edie Sedgwick, Ivy Nicholson and Bob Dylan, and filming Screen Tests and features such as Chelsea Girls, Vinyl and My Hustler.

Cai Guo-Qiang: Light Cycle: Explosion Project for Central Parkby: Eleey, Peter

Cai Guo-Qiang: Light Cycle: Explosion Project for Central Park
by: Eleey, Peter

Hardcover. New York, Asia Society/Creative Time, 1st, 2005, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, 24 pages. Hardcover with no dust jacket. Accordion binding. Very clean, unmarked copy with only minor edgewear. Commissioned to celebrate the 150th anniversary of Central Park, Cai's Light Cycle fireworks display lit the New York sky with a circle of explosions on a September night in 2003. This 24-page accordion book documents it all from planning to performance, executed by the famous Grucci fireworks family. Separating the book's hardbound cloth covers reveals a continuous folded sheet with reproductions of Cai's gunpowder drawings (made by burning scant gunpowder on paper) on one side and photographs of the event and text on the other. In an interview, the artist compares his drawings to "love-making" and explains some technical aspects of his displays, such as a computer chip in each explosive shell.
