Andy Kaufman Revealed!: Best Friend Tells All by: Zmuda, Bob

Andy Kaufman Revealed!: Best Friend Tells All
by: Zmuda, Bob

Hardcover. Boston, Little Brown , 1st, 1999, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright, unclipped dust jacket. 306 pages, b&w photos. Best known for his sweet-natured character Latka on Taxi, Andy Kaufman was the most influential comic of the generation that produced David Letterman, John Belushi, and Robin Williams. A regular on the early days of Saturday Night Live (where he regularly disrupted planned skits), Kaufman quickly became known for his idiosyncratic roles and for performances that crossed the boundaries of comedy, challenging expectations and shocking audiences. Kaufmans death from lung cancer at age 35 (hed never smoked) stunned his fans and the comic community that had come to look to him as its lightning rod and standard bearer. Bob Zmuda, Kaufmans closest friend, producer, writer, and straight man, breaks his twenty-year silence about Kaufman and unmasks the man he knew better than anyone. He chronicles Kaufmans meteoric rise, the development of his extraordinary personas, the private man behind the driven actor and comedian, and answers the question most often asked: Did Andy Kaufman fake his own death?

Angel of the Battlefield: The Life of Clara Barton by: Ross, Ishbel

Angel of the Battlefield: The Life of Clara Barton
by: Ross, Ishbel

Hardcover. NY, Harper & Brothers, BC Ed., 1956, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket. 305 pages, 16 pages of b&w illustrations. A legend in her own time, Clara Barton, comes to life in these pages. One can almost sense the death and destruction of the battlefields (American Civil War) and disasters to which Barton was the first to bring aid and comfort to the suffering. Barton's life is great testimony as to the powerful influence that one person can have on the outcome of history, and was achieved in an age when women were secondary figures. A diminutive five-foot tall, she rose as a giant among her historical peers (e.g., Susan B. Anthony and Dorothea Dix, et al.) and forever shaped the topography of American society, healthcare, and emergency relief, by founding the American Red Cross [1881] at age 59. Clean copy.

Ansel Adams - Letters and Images 1916-1984by: Adams, Ansel

Ansel Adams - Letters and Images 1916-1984
by: Adams, Ansel

Boston, N.Y. Graphic Society, BC Ed., 1988, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover. Black & white photos. 400 pages. Flap has price, (C) page with First Edition statement but actually Book Club edition. Edited by Mary Street Alinder & Andrea Gray Stillman. In his early years in Yosemite, Adams formed the habit of writing letters at every opportunity. His correspondence, therefore, virtually provides the full record of his life. Through the years, wherever he went, from the Southwest to Maine to Alaska, he wrote literally thousands of letters and postcards. Among the family, friends, fellow photographers, environmentalists, and politicians with whom he corresponded rank such eminent names as Alfred Stieglitz, Dorothea Lange, Paul Strand, jimmy Carter, Beaumont and Nancy Newhall, Garry Trudeau, and Edward Weston. Including both sides of continuing dialogues with these people and others, this book revels the growth of the artist and the whole man, as well as the development of the art of photography through the voices of the masters. A companion volume to his best-selling autobiography, ANSEL ADAMS: LETTERS AND IMAGES is illustrated with over 100 of his photographs from monumental landscapes to family snapshots. This combination of images with the highlights of a lifetime of letter writing creates a compelling portrait of one of the 20th century's greatest artists and conservationists and one of the most personable and memorable of men.

Appetite for America: How Visionary Businessman Fred Harvey Built a Railroad Hospitality Empire That Civilized the Wild Westby: Stephen Fried

Appetite for America: How Visionary Businessman Fred Harvey Built a Railroad Hospitality Empire That Civilized the Wild West
by: Stephen Fried

Hardcover. NY, Bantam, 1st, 2010, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright, unclipped dust jacket. 518 pages, b&w illustrations. Appetite for America is the incredible real-life story of Fred Harvey--told in depth for the first time ever--as well as the story of this country's expansion into the Wild West of Bat Masterson and Billy the Kid, of the great days of the railroad, of a time when a deal could still be made with a handshake and the United States was still uniting. As a young immigrant, Fred Harvey worked his way up from dishwasher to household name: He was Ray Kroc before McDonald's, J. Willard Marriott before Marriott Hotels, Howard Schultz before Starbucks. His eating houses and hotels along the Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe railroad (including historic lodges still in use at the Grand Canyon) were patronized by princes, presidents, and countless ordinary travelers looking for the best cup of coffee in the country. Harvey's staff of carefully screened single young women--the celebrated Harvey Girls--were the country's first female workforce and became genuine Americana, even inspiring an MGM musical starring Judy Garland. Arnold Newman: The Early Workby: Philip Brookman , Arnold Newman

Arnold Newman: The Early Work
by: Philip Brookman , Arnold Newman

Hardcover. GR, Steidl, 1st, 2007, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 232 pages. When celebrated photographer Arnold Newman began his career in 1938 in chain portrait studios in Philadelphia, Baltimore and West Palm Beach, he also immediately began to make abstract and documentary photography on his own, studying people and places impoverished by the Depression. In June of 1941, Beaumont Newhall of The Museum of Modern Art, New York, and Alfred Stieglitz "discovered" him, and he was given an exhibit with Ben Rose at the A.D. Gallery that September. There Newman began to combine his independent work with the portraiture that had been his bread-and-butter, developing the approach for which he is best known, which came to be called "environmental portraiture," and which is so widely influential today that it might be the new standard practice. This style made Newman a distinctive contributor to publications like Life, Vanity Fair, and the New York Times Magazine, brought him into the collections of museums around the world, including The Museum of Modern Art, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the International Center of Photography in New York, and led to his recognition in photography histories and with awards including France's Commander of the Order of Arts and Letters. The photographs collected here were made before Newman achieved recognition as a pioneering portraitist, during the formative years from 1938 to 1942. They highlight the early stirrings of a great photographic master.

Artwork Caught by the Tail:Francis Picabia and Dada in Parisby: Baker, George

Artwork Caught by the Tail:Francis Picabia and Dada in Paris
by: Baker, George

Hardcover. Cambridge MA, The MIT Press, 1sr, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright gold foil dust wrapper, 476 pages. The artist Francis Picabia -- notorious dandy, bon vivant, painter, poet, filmmaker, and polemicist -- has emerged as the Dadaist with postmodern appeal, and one of the most enigmatic forces behind the enigma that was Dada. In this first book in English to focus on Picabia's work in Paris during the Dada years, art historian and critic George Baker reimagines Dada through Picabia's eyes. Such reimagining involves a new account of the readymade -- Marcel Duchamp's anti-art invention, which opened fine art to mass culture and the commodity. But in Picabia's hands, Baker argues, the Dada readymade aimed to reinvent art rather than destroy it. Picabia's readymade opened art not just to the commodity, but to the larger world from which the commodity stems: the fluid sea of capital and money that transforms all objects and experiences in its wake. The book thus tells the story of a set of newly transformed artistic practices, claiming them for art history -- and naming them -- for the first time: Dada Drawing, Dada Painting, Dada Photography, Dada Abstraction, Dada Cinema, Dada Montage.Along the way, Baker describes a series of nearly forgotten objects and events, from the almost lunatic range of the Paris Dada "manifestations" to Picabia's polemical writings. Clean copy.
