Life isn't everything: Mike Nichols, as remembered by 150 of his closest friendsby: Ash Carter and Sam Kashner

Life isn't everything: Mike Nichols, as remembered by 150 of his closest friends
by: Ash Carter and Sam Kashner

Hardcover. NY, Henry Holt, 1st, 2019, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright, unclipped dust jacket. An up close and personal portrait of a legendary filmmaker, theater director, and comedian, drawing on candid conversations with his closest friends in show business and the arts-from Dustin Hoffman and Meryl Streep to Natalie Portman and Lorne Michaels. The work of Mike Nichols pervades American cultural consciousness-from The Graduate and Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? to Angels in America, The Birdcage, Working Girl, and Primary Colors, not to mention his string of hit plays, including Barefoot in the Park and The Odd Couple. If that weren't enough, he was also one half of the timelessly funny duo Nichols & May, as well as a founding member of the original improv troupe. Over a career that spanned half a century, Mike Nichols changed Hollywood, Broadway, and comedy forever. Most fans, however, know very little of the person behind it all. Since he never wrote his memoirs, and seldom appeared on television, they have very little sense of his searching intellect or his devastating wit. They don't know that Nichols, the great American director, was born Mikail Igor Peschkowsky, in Berlin, and came to this country, speaking no English, to escape the Nazis. They don't know that Nichols was at one time a solitary psychology student, or that a childhood illness caused permanent, life-altering side effects. They don't know that he withdrew into a debilitating depression before he "finally got it right," in his words, by marrying Diane Sawyer. Remainder dot to bottom edge otherwise clean.

Lillian Orlowsky: The Signature Is in the Work
by: Orlowsky/Myrna Harrison & Claire Sprague (Eds.) , Lillian

Softcover. Cape Cod Museum of Art/Providencetown Museum, 1st, 2007, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, 59 pages, exhibition catalog illustrated in color. Essays by Robert Henry, April Kingsley, Myra Harrison and Claire Sprague. Lillian Orlowsky painter, teacher, curator, critic and mentor (Born 1914 in New York City, died August 7, 2007 in Provincetown) I was fortunate to have taken part in one of the most important periods of art in this century. The 1930's through the 1950's saw a cultural upheaval where diverse concepts in painting went from one extreme to another: from realism to abstraction. In the forefront were the WPA (Works Projects Administration - Art Project) and in some measure the Provincetown Art Association. They promoted cultural awareness of the different pictorial concepts which were the beginning of the changing scene of plastic expression.

Lily: Reminiscences of Lillian Hellmanby: Peter Feibleman

Lily: Reminiscences of Lillian Hellman
by: Peter Feibleman

NY, William Morrow, 1988, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright, price-clipped dust jacket. 364 pages, b&w photos. Novelist Peter Feibleman first met world-famous playwright Lillian Hellman when he was ten and she was thirty-five-years old, and out of that first encounter there grew romantic friendship that was to blossom into a love affair--one that ended only with her death. Drawing on many of her letters, private journals, and conversations recorded by them both specifically for this memoir, and on her later published and unpublished works, as well as on his own diaries, Feibleman brings to life one of the most glittering, fascinating, and complex women of our time. LILLY is replete with anecdotes about Miss Hellman's celebrated friends, including Dashiell Hammett, with whom she shared her life for many years; Dorothy Parker; Elizabeth Taylor, who made a triumphant stage appearance in 'The Little Foxes'; Mike Nichols; Elaine May; Leonard Bernstein; and her Martha's Vineyard neighbors--Jules Feiffer, Barbara and John Hersey, Ann and Art Buchwald, Rose and William Styron, and many, many others. Her animosities are depicted as well, including her lengthy and virulent feud with Mary McCarthy. What emerges is an intensely personal portrait, unique and fully realized, of an immensely talented writer, her ways of loving, and her world.

Lists of Inhabitants of Colonial New York: Excerpted from the Documentary History of the State of New York
by: O'Callaghan, Edmund Bailey

Hardcover. Baltimore MD, Genealogical Publishing Company, reprint, 1999, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Hardcover, blue cloth with gilt lettering, 351 pages. Edmund Bailey O'Callaghan's Documentary History of the State of New-York, published in four volumes between 1849 and 1851, is one of the key source-books for genealogical and historical research in New York State. Interspersed throughout its more than 4,350 pages are copies of important genealogical records of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, among which are census records, rate lists, lists of early settlers, and rolls of militia companies. This present volume is an extract of all the important genealogical records in the O'Callaghan work, brought together in just under 300 pages, contains a complete index of names, and overcomes, for individuals unfamiliar with Dutch or German nomenclature, the confusion caused by variant spellings of family names. The records are arranged in this work in the same sequence in which they appear in the Documentary History. Clean, bright copy.

Livingstone's River: A History of the Zambezi Expedition, 1858-1864
by: Martelli, George

Hardcover. NY, Simon & Schuster, 1st, 1969, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Good, Hardcover in a lightly worn dust jacket, 286 pages. frontis, map on endpapers, biblio, notes, index, Of all Livingstone's exploits, none was more daringly conceived, more ill-fated and more difficult than his expedition to the Zambezi- a monumental step in opening up the Dark Continent. The author recounts the insuperable difficulties that made the expedition an epic of endurance- sickness, strandings, endless toil and hardship, and almost unbelievable acts of courage. More than a story of an expedition, it is a portrait of Livingstone the man, a hero of superhuman contrasts-ruthless to his subordinates yet selflessly humanitarian; completely idealistic yet viciously spiteful; profoundly serious yet a reckless gambler.

Loring W. Coleman: Living and Painting in a Changing New Englandby: Loring Colemam/Hugh Fortmiller (Editor), Henry Adams (Foreword)

Loring W. Coleman: Living and Painting in a Changing New England
by: Loring Colemam/Hugh Fortmiller (Editor), Henry Adams (Foreword)

Hardcover. Hudson Hills, 1st, 2011, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket, 240 pages, color illustrations. Loring Coleman's voice as a storyteller is full of his humor and sense of wonder as he tells us about his life and then gives us the tales behind the beauty and mystery of over 50 of his paintings, most of which are reflections of a disappearing life in New England. He begins by describing the moment when his eyesight failed, and he learned that after seven decades as an artist, he might never paint again. His creation of this book became his response. With spirited memories of the intriguing characters who affected his life, Loring describes his upbringing in the tough Chicago of the 1930s, his discovery of idyllic rivers in Concord, Massachusetts, and his adventures as a motorcyclist and young student of great art teachers. He tells of marrying his wife Katinka the day before Pearl Harbor, entering the military, and quickly finding himself commanding the U.S. Army's largest World War II art department. He then traces his energetic years as a teacher, traveling art historian, and lover of Bavaria and Austria. In the context of his rich personal life, Loring shows us his paintings, as he reveals the many amusing, exasperating, and provocative experiences surrounding the artistic choices he made as he became one of New England's most revered artists. Lorraine Hansberry: The Life Behind A Raisin in the Sunby: Charles J. Shields

Lorraine Hansberry: The Life Behind A Raisin in the Sun
by: Charles J. Shields

Hardcover. NY, Henry Holt, 1st, 2022, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket, unclipped. The moving story of the life of the woman behind A Raisin in the Sun, the most widely anthologized, read, and performed play of the American stage. Written when she was just twenty-eight, Lorraine Hansberry's landmark A Raisin in the Sun is listed by the National Theatre as one of the hundred most significant works of the twentieth century. Hansberry was the first Black woman to have a play performed on Broadway, and the first Black and youngest American playwright to win a New York Critics' Circle Award. Charles J. Shields's authoritative biography of one of the twentieth century's most admired playwrights examines the parts of Lorraine Hansberry's life that have escaped public knowledge: the influence of her upper-class background, her fight for peace and nuclear disarmament, the reason why she embraced Communism during the Cold War, and her dependence on her white husband-her best friend, critic, and promoter. Many of the identity issues about class, sexuality, and race that she struggled with are relevant and urgent today. This dramatic telling of a passionate life-a very American life through self-reinvention-uses previously unpublished interviews with close friends in politics and theater, privately held correspondence, and deep research to reconcile old mysteries and raise new questions about a life not fully described until now.
